Rapid Estimation of Tocopherol Content in Linseed and Sunflower Oils-Reactivity and Assay.

The reactivity of tocopherols with 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) was studied in model systems in order to establish a method for quantifying vitamin E in plant oils. The method was optimized with respect to solvent composition of the assay medium, which has a large influence on the course of reaction of tocopherols with DPPH. The rate of reaction of α-tocopherol with DPPH is higher than that of γ-tocopherol in both protic and aprotic solvents. In ethyl acetate, routinely applied for the analysis of antioxidant potential (AOP) of plant oils, reactions of tocopherols with DPPH are slower …

Chronic toxicity of heavy fuel oils to fish embryos using multiple exposure scenarios.

The chronic toxicity to rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) embryos of heavy fuel oil (HFO) 6303, weathered HFO 6303, HFO 7102, and medium South American (MESA) crude oil was assessed by different exposure regimes. These included water accommodated fractions (WAF; water in contact with floating oil), chemically enhanced WAF (CEWAF; oil dispersed with Corexit 9500), and effluent from columns of gravel coated with stranded oil. Heavy fuel oil WAF was nontoxic and did not contain detectable concentrations of hydrocarbons, likely because the high density and viscosity of HFO prevented droplet form

Control of the chewing louse Bovicola (Werneckiella) ocellatus in donkeys, using essential oils.

Infestations by lice can be a significant clinical and welfare issue in the management of large animals. The limited range of commercial pediculicides available and the development of resistance have led to the need to explore alternative louse management approaches. The results of in vitro and in vivo trials undertaken to control populations of the donkey chewing louse, Bovicola ocellatus (Piaget) (Phthiraptera: Trichodectidae) using the essential oils of tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) and lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) are reported here. Results of contact and vapour bioassays showed t…

Sensitivity of pathogenic and commensal bacteria from the human colon to essential oils.

The microbiota of the intestinal tract plays an important role in colonic health, mediating many effects of dietary components on colonic health and during enteric infections. In the context of the increasing incidence of antibiotic resistance in gut bacteria, complementary therapies are required for the prevention and treatment of enteric infections. Here we report the potential application of essential oils (EO) and pure EO compounds to improve human gut health. Nerolidol, thymol, eugenol and geraniol inhibited growth of the pathogens Escherichia coli O157 : H7(VT(-)), Clostridium difficile …

Anthelmintic effect of Mentha spp. essential oils on Echinococcus granulosus protoscoleces and metacestodes.

The aim of the present work was to determine the in vitro effect of Mentha piperita and Mentha pulegium essential oils against Echinococcus granulosus and to compare the effectiveness of both oils according to the exposure time and concentration. Although both treatments had a protoscolicidal effect, M. pulegium had a considerably stronger effect than M. piperita. Essential oil of M. pulegium produced dose- and time-dependent effects. Maximal protoscolicidal effect was observed after 12 days of incubation and reached 0% after 18 days. This lack of viability was proved during the determination …

Patent literature on mosquito repellent inventions which contain plant essential oils--a review.

Bites Bites of mosquitoes belonging to the genera Anopheles Meigen, Aedes Meigen, Culex L. and Haemagogus L. are a general nuisance and are responsible for the transmission of important tropical diseases such as malaria, hemorrhagic dengue and yellow fevers and filariasis (elephantiasis). Plants are traditional sources of mosquito repelling essential oils (EOs), glyceridic oils and repellent and synergistic chemicals. A Chemical Abstracts search on mosquito repellent inventions containing plant-derived EOs revealed 144 active patents mostly from Asia. Chinese, Japanese and Korean language pate…

Vasorelaxant activity of essential oils from Croton zambesicus and some of their constituents.

In this study, we determined the vasorelaxant activity of essential oils of different samples of CROTON ZAMBESICUS collected in the same area in Benin at different periods and analysed their compositions by GC-FID and GC-MS. 68 compounds were identified among which 20 have not been described previously in this plant's essential oils. We observed quantitative differences among essential oils but all possess significant vasorelaxant activity on intact rat aortae contracted by KCl (IC (50) 5.6-11.8 µg/mL). This activity may, at least in part, be explained by the presence of vasorelaxant diterpene…

Statins and dietary fish oils improve lipid composition in bone marrow and joints.

There have been numerous efforts to alter the lipid content of cardiovascular tissues. Although equally important, only limited information is available about musculoskeletal tissues. I characterized joint and bone marrow lipids in patients having joint replacement surgery and explored the effects of fish oils and statins on lipid composition in bone marrow and joint fluid. Joint drainage catheters were used to collect marrow lipids from 84 patients having 128 hip and knee replacements for osteoarthritis, osteonecrosis, and femoral neck fractures (osteoporosis). Statins reduced the amount of l…

Investigating the onset of autoimmunity in A.SW mice following treatment with 'toxic oils'.

In 1981, over 20,000 people were struck with toxic oil syndrome (TOS). H-2s strains of mice have been shown to develop symptoms of TOS after exposure to toxic oil. We examined the effects of toxic oil on A.SW mice, which are susceptible to chemically-induced autoimmunity, but do not spontaneously develop autoimmune disease. Mice were treated with three types of toxic oil: CO756 (case oil from Spain), RSD99 (rapeseed oil with no 3-(N-phenylamino)-1-2-propanediol (PAP) derivatives) and RSA99 (rapeseed oil supplemented with PAP derivatives). Mercuric chloride treated mice were used as a positive

Improvements are needed in the existing packaging of medicated oils containing methyl salicylate.

In view of the toxic potential of medicated oils containing methyl salicylate, we have studied the existing packaging of 10 commonly used preparations from Hong Kong and Singapore and identified areas for improvement with respect to the prevention of poisonings. They were all packed in translucent bottles without child-resistant closures. The methyl salicylate content ranged from 15 to 67%. Many preparations also contained other potentially toxic ingredients in significant amounts, such as turpentine oil and camphor. The contents of the larger bottles could generally be emptied more easily bec…

Organic solvents and oils as vehicles for triclosan in mouthrinses: a clinical study.

Previous experiments have shown that the nature of the detergents used in aqueous triclosan-containing mouthrinses affects the plaque-inhibiting effect of these mouthrinses, probably because of the properties of the micelles formed. It has also been shown that triclosan has a marked plaque-inhibiting effect when dissolved in pure propylene glycol. The aim of the present study was to compare the clinical effect of triclosan dissolved in oils and in the pure solvents glycerol (GLY) and polyethylene glycol (PEG). A test panel of 12 volunteers rinsed with the allocated mouthrinses for 4 days in a …

The toxicity of myoporum tetrandrum (Boobialla) and myoporaceous furanoid essential oils for ruminants.

Boobialla (Myoporum tetrandrum)leaf contains from 0.25 to 0.5% wet weight of furanoid sesquiterpene essential oils of which the main component is dehydrongaione. The plant was toxic when dosed to calves at equivalent dose rates of oils of from 50 to 134 mg/kg, causing mainly extensive haemorrhagic centrillobular necrosis; and to sheep at equivalent dose rates of oil of from 55 to 66 mg/kg, causing either centrilobular or periportal liver lesions with or without acute pulmonary oedema. An essential oil mixture of similar composition derived from Myoporum deserti produced similar syndromes. In a…

An ex vivo, assessor blind, randomised, parallel group, comparative efficacy trial of the ovicidal activity of three pediculicides after a single application--melaleuca oil and lavender oil, eucalyptus oil and lemon tea tree oil, and a "suffocation" pediculicide.

BACKGROUND: There are two components to the clinical efficacy of pediculicides: (i) efficacy against the crawling-stages (lousicidal efficacy); and (ii) efficacy against the eggs (ovicidal efficacy). Lousicidal efficacy and ovicidal efficacy are confounded in clinical trials. Here we report on a trial that was specially designed to rank the clinical ovicidal efficacy of pediculicides. Eggs were collected, pre-treatment and post-treatment, from subjects with different types of hair, different coloured hair and hair of different length. METHOD: Subjects with at least 20 live eggs of Pediculus c

Neonatal growth with fish oil or mixed oil lipid emulsions in intestinal failure associated liver disease.

BACKGROUND: Treatment strategies for intestinal failure associated liver disease (IFALD) include use of fish-oil lipid emulsion (FO-ILE) or mixed-oil emulsion containing soy, medium chain triglyceride, olive, and fish oils (SO,MCT,OO,FO-ILE). FO-ILE is limited to 1 g/kg/day, either limiting overall calorie provision or shifting calories toward carbohydrate predominance. The objective of this project was to compare the growth of neonates with IFALD receiving either SO,MCT,OO,FO-ILE or FO-ILE. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted of neonates with IFALD receiving SO,M…

Upgrading sesame cake-extracted oil via enzymatic glycerolysis: Production and characterization of diacylglycerol-enriched oil.

Solvent-extracted oil from pressed sesame cake has limited value due to flavor loss. This study developed an enzymatic strategy to convert it into diacylglycerol (DAG)-enriched oil via Novozym 435-catalyzed glycerolysis. Under optimized conditions (molar ratio 1:4, enzyme loading 10%, 90 °C), efficient DAG formation was achieved by overcoming multiphase mass transfer limitations. The product was dominated by 1,3-DAG, with a significantly higher proportion than 1,2-DAG. Fourier transform infrared confirmed structural reconfiguration of glycerides, while gas chromatography analysis showed that p

Damages on arctic seabird feathers: Exposure to low sulphur fuel oils is comparable to exposure to conventional oil.

New fuel oils with low content of sulphur are entering the market due to recent international regulations on the sulphur content. These oils show large variations in properties, but many have high pour points, low dispersibility and low evaporation, important for oil spill consequences. Though oil spills may be mitigated by e.g. in-situ burning, remaining residues may still be harmful for wildlife, particularly seabirds. Here, we quantified weight increase and clumping of barbules using the Amalgamation Index [AI] on seabird feathers following exposure to three different low sulphur fuel oils …

Effects of oil types on the stability of oil-in-water emulsions prepared using Dioscorea opposita mucilage and gums.

To evaluate the effects of different oil types (mandarin oil, soybean oil, and fish oil) on emulsion stability, oil-in-water emulsions were prepared using Dioscorea opposita mucilage and food-grade gums (guar gum, xanthan gum, and pectin). Key indicators, such as droplet size, turbidity, interfacial tension, and rheological properties, were characterized. Soybean oil emulsions exhibited superior 21-day storage stability, with smaller droplet sizes (56.98 nm) and enhanced apparent viscosity (50.82 Pa·s). Notably, the pectin-Dioscorea opposita mucilage-soybean oil emulsions (1:10:25, weight rati
