The most characteristic difference of Japanese Diphyllobothrium latum from those of European and Canadian species is it's second intermediate host. The Japanese Diphyllobothrium latum take genus Oncorhynchus as it's most important 2nd intermediate host and plerocercoids are always found in their fillet not in their viscera which phenomena can not be observed in the cases of the latter Diphyllobothrium. From 1977 to 1982, we examined 723 Cherry salmon, Oncorhynchus masou which were caught in the northern Japan Sea from March to May every year. Out of 723 Cherry salmon, 218 (30.2%) were showed t…

Marine salmon farming has been correlated with parasitic sea lice infestations and concurrent declines of wild salmonids. Here, we report a quantitative analysis of how a single salmon farm altered the natural transmission dynamics of sea lice to juvenile Pacific salmon. We studied infections of sea lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis and Caligus clemensi) on juvenile pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) and chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) as they passed an isolated salmon farm during their seaward migration down two long and narrow corridors. Our calculations suggest the infection pressure imposed …

The tapeworm Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidea), originally described from Japan, is reported from a man in North America for the first time. Species identification was based on sequences of ribosomal (partial 18S rRNA) and mitochondrial (partial Cytochrome c Oxidase subunit I) genes of proglottids expelled from a Czech tourist who ate raw Pacific sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) from British Columbia, Canada.

Tenacibaculum piscium, a gram-negative bacterium isolated from the skin ulcers of sea-farmed fish, has only been described in Norway. In the present study, we examined 16 Chilean Tenacibaculum isolates recovered from different organs in moribund and dead Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and Coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) cultured at different fish farms between 2014 and 2018. The present study applied biochemical, phenotypic, fatty acid and whole-genome sequence-based analyses to confirm the taxonomic status of the Chilean isolates. The obtained results ar…

The success and sustainability of Chilean aquaculture largely depends on the control of endemic and emerging pathogens, including several species of the genus Tenacibaculum. Tenacibaculum dicentrarchi and "Tenacibaculum finnmarkense" have been detected and confirmed in Chilean Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). However, no outbreaks of tenacibaculosis in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) or coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) have been reported, either in Chile or globally. The aims of this study were to determine whether the mortalities recorded for rainbow trout and coho salmon from five marine…

Piscine orthoreoviruses (PRVs) are emerging pathogens causing circulatory disorders in salmonids. PRV-1 is the etiological cause of heart and skeletal muscle inflammation (HSMI) in farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), characterized by epicarditis, inflammation and necrosis of the myocardium, myositis and necrosis of red skeletal muscle. In 2017, two German breeding farms for Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) experienced disease outbreaks with mortalities of 10% and 20% respectively. The main clinical signs were exhaustion and lethargic behaviour. During examinations, PRV…

Despite the common mechanisms that underlie vertebrate responses to exhaustive exercise stress, the magnitude and the timecourse of recovery can be context-specific. Here, we examine how wild, adult male and female pink (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) and sockeye (Oncorhynchus nerka) salmon respond to and recover from an exhaustive exercise and air exposure stressor, designed to simulate fisheries capture and handling. We follow gill tissue gene expression for genes active in cellular stress, cell maintenance, and apoptosis as well as plasma osmoregulatory, stress, and reproductive indices. The stres…

Bacterial coldwater disease (BCWD), caused by Flavobacterium psychrophilum, results in significant losses among multiple salmonid (family Salmonidae) species. Molecular epidemiology and serotyping studies have suggested that some variants are host specific; however, these associations have not been evaluated by cross-challenging fish species with putatively host-associated F. psychrophilum isolates via more natural (i.e. immersion) exposure routes. To this end, F. psychrophilum isolates US19-COS, US62-ATS and US87-RBT, each originally recovered from diseased coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch),…

Data on the infection of the musculature of juvenile salmons Oncorhynchus gorbuscha (Walbaum, 1792) and O. keta (Walbaum, 1792) with the nematode Anisakis sp. l. and cestode Diphyllobothriidae gen. sp. l. in Okhotsk Sea and adjacent Pacific waters are given. Probable regions where the infestation of juvenile salmons may take place are established. Interspecific differences in the levels of infestation, as well as differences in the invasion of fishes during their migration to ocean are revealed.

Eggs of zebrafish Brachydanio rerio were heat-shocked just after fertilisation to induce triploidy and subsequently subjected to microinjection with the linear recombinant plasmid containing the Rous Sarcoma Virus-Long Terminal Repeat (RSV-LTR) promoter linked to the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) growth hormone (GH)cDNA(pRSVrtGH). Slot and Southern analyses showed the extra chromosomal transfer of pRSVrtGH. Expression of pRSVrtGH was detected in the triploid transformants by RNA slot, Northern and Western analyses.

6PPD-quinone (6PPD-Q), a transformation product of tire rubber anti-oxidant 6PPD, has been identified as the primary causal toxicant for the urban runoff mortality syndrome observed in coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) in the Pacific Northwest, USA. Several other fish species are also vulnerable to 6PPD-Q. However, monitoring efforts on 6PPD-Q have been focused on water, particulate matter, soils, and sediments, while that in tissues remains scarce. This study presents a workflow for extraction and quantitative analysis of 6PPD-Q in complex tissues from shellfish, finfish, and marine mammals.…

The tire-wear transformation product 6PPD-quinone (6PPD-Q) is a primary driver of "Urban Runoff Mortality Syndrome" by inducing acute and species-specific mortality in salmonids, yet the underlying toxicokinetic mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the multi-tissue biokinetics of 6PPD-Q in sensitive rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and relatively tolerant masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou) using novel damage-coupled biokinetic models. Surprisingly, results revealed a non-linear, accelerating accumulation trajectory across all tissues, with the brain and liver se…

PDRN is a proprietary and registered drug that possesses several activities: tissue repairing, anti-ischemic, and anti-inflammatory. These therapeutic properties suggest its use in regenerative medicine and in diabetic foot ulcers. PDRN holds a mixture of deoxyribonucleotides with molecular weights ranging between 50 and 1,500 KDa, it is derived from a controlled purification and sterilization process of Oncorhynchus mykiss (Salmon Trout) or Oncorhynchus keta (Chum Salmon) sperm DNA. The procedure guarantees the absence of active protein and peptides that may cause immune reactions. In vitro a…
