Rate of return of functional outcome after open reduction and internal fixation of unstable ankle fractures.

In the prospective cohort study reported here, we used the Short Musculoskeletal Function Assessment (SMFA) questionnaire to assess rate of return of functional outcome after open reduction and internal fixation of unstable ankle fractures (Orthopaedic Trauma Association/Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen [OTA/AO] 44B and 44C) at a level II trauma center over the course of 1 year. The entire group of 69 consecutive adults improved significantly (P<.01) on the SMFA Emotional Status and Dysfunction scales from 2 to 4 months and on the Mobility and Daily Activities scales from 2 to 4 mon

Pediatric olecranon fractures: open reduction and internal fixation with removable Kirschner wires and absorbable sutures.

The authors present an original fixation technique for pediatric olecranon fractures that avoids reoperation to remove hardware as compared with the standard fixation technique with Kirschner wires and tension band wiring as advocated by the AO technique. The authors' technique uses two percutaneously placed Kirschner wires to fixate displaced transverse and oblique olecranon fractures. Prior to the insertion of the wires, the fracture is reduced through a standard open approach. Augmentation of the pin fixation is achieved with absorbable sutures. Six patients have been treated with this tech

Open reduction and internal fixation of condylar fractures via an extended bicoronal approach with a masseteric myotomy.

Although condylar fractures of the mandible may be treated by closed reduction and appropriate physiotherapy, open reduction and internal fixation is indicated in specific circumstances. We report 25 cases of a previously unreported method of exposure of condylar fractures using an extended bicoronal approach combined with myotomy of the masseter muscle. Acceptable reduction and fixation was achieved in all cases with an early return to function. The incidence of complications was low, with three mild temporary facial palsies which had resolved by the sixth postoperative week and one haematoma

Functional outcome of patients with unstable pelvic ring fractures stabilized with open reduction and internal fixation.

An unstable pelvic ring fracture represents a severe injury and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Little data are available assessing the long-term functional limitations, including disability, in a patient with an unstable pelvic ring fracture. The purpose of this study was to describe the impairment and functional outcome (disability) for patients with unstable pelvic ring fractures managed with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). Disability was measured at a minimum of 1 year postinjury using the Sickness Impact Profile (SIP), a measure of the health-related quality

Open reduction and internal fixation of tibial plafond fractures. Variables contributing to poor results and complications.

In a retrospective study, 58 patients with 60 tibial plafond fractures were treated by internal fixation and reviewed over an average follow-up period of 2.5 years. There were three Reudi Type I, 27 Reudi Type II, and 30 Reudi Type III fractures. Twelve fractures were open, and 60% of the fractures were the result of high-energy trauma. Results were evaluated based on a subjective and objective rating system. There were 15 good and excellent (25%), 15 fair (25%), and 30 poor results (50%). The deep infection rate in Reudi Types I and II fractures was 0%, and in Type III fractures it was 37%. T

The computed tomographic evaluation of patellofemoral joint in patellar fractures treated with open reduction and internal fixation.

In this study, we examined 97 patella fractures in which open reduction and internal fixation had been performed at the 1st Orthopaedics and Trauma Clinic of Social Security Ankara Hospital between January 1983 and December 1988. After 24 to 96 months, on an average of 48.4 months follow-up period, the cases were evaluated clinically for knee function complaints and by CT and roentgenography for patellofemoral articulation. In 11 of the patients (11.5) there was patellar displacement, 2 of the patients had patellar tilt (2.1%) and in 14 patients (14.5%) there was malalignment in which 1 patien

Displaced fractures of the head and neck of the radius in children: open reduction and temporary transarticular internal fixation.

This report reviews the results of 36 children surgically treated for fractures of the head and neck of the radius. Indications for operation were: displacement over 2 mm and/or angulation over 45 degrees. Treatment included open reduction and temporary internal fixation with a K-wire transfixing the joint. Eighteen children had a good result, 8 had a fair result, and 10 had a poor result. It appears that when radial head fractures are associated with severe displacement, a high rate of fair and poor results can be expected, despite treatment by open reduction and temporary internal fixation.

Open reduction and internal fixation of humeral shaft fractures. Results using AO plating techniques.

Thirty-six patients with an acute fracture of the humeral shaft were treated by open reduction and internal fixation using AO plating techniques. In thirty-two patients an open fracture or multiple injuries, or both, were the indications for internal fixation. Four patients were treated after non-operative treatment failed to maintain a satisfactory reduction. Follow-up was possible for thirty-four patients and showed that thirty-three fractures united primarily and one failed to unite, necessitating two subsequent procedures. Two superficial wound infections in patients with an open fracture

Comparative analysis of closed versus open reduction and internal fixation in mandibular fractures: A prospective study.

Mandibular fractures are among the most frequently encountered maxillofacial injuries. Yet, the optimal management strategy between closed and open reduction with internal fixation (ORIF) remains a topic of considerable debate, given differences in functional outcomes and complication rates. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate and compare the clinical, functional and radiographic outcomes of closed reduction (CR) using maxillomandibular fixation and ORIF using titanium miniplates in patients with isolated mandibular fractures. Eighty patients were randomly allocated into two groups-Group

Complication Risks Following Open Reduction Internal Fixation Versus Nonsurgical Treatment of Scapular Fractures.

BACKGROUND: Scapula fractures vary considerably in type, location, and management. Surgical management is commonly through open reduction internal fixation (ORIF), but the existing literature on its clinical outcomes is inconsistent compared with conservative management. This descriptive study reports the risk of short- and long-term complications from ORIF and nonsurgical treatment of various scapula fracture subtypes. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of the TriNetX database was performed. Twelve cohorts were created, with two for each treatment modality for every fracture location investigat

Impact of Surgical Timing on Postoperative Complications Following Open Reduction Internal Fixation of Mandibular Fractures.

PURPOSE: The mandible is the second most fractured facial bone. The timing of open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) has been a subject of debate for decades. The authors sought to investigate the association between the timing of ORIF and the incidence of postoperative complications. METHODS: The authors retrospectively reviewed adult trauma patients who underwent ORIF in 2018 and 2019. The authors excluded patients who underwent mandibulomaxillary fixation (MMF) only and those with postoperative follow-up <2 weeks. The duration between injury and ORIF was categorized into: <4, 4 to 7, and
