Neuro-ophthalmic evaluation of the red orbit syndrome.

Outlined is a coherent differential diagnostic approach to the neuro-ophthalmic syndrome of the "red orbit" that is accompanied by visual loss or diplopia that too frequently is misconstrued as intracranial pathology.

Management of wooden foreign bodies in the orbit.

Three large wooden foreign bodies were undetected in the orbit despite extensive evaluation and orbital exploration. In two cases there was motility disturbance from orbital inflammation that resolved after late spontaneous extrusion of the foreign material. Recurrent fistula unresponsive to antibiotics persisted in two cases until the wood extruded. Computerized tomography and ultrasonography failed to identify the foreign material. Orbital exploration without preoperative localization of the foreign body is usually contraindicated because proptosis, motility limitation, and fistula usually r…

Retention of wooden foreign bodies in the orbit.

Two cases of retention of wooden foreign bodies in the orbit are presented. Both patients had a draining fistula. A brain abscess developed in one and a foreign body granuloma in the other. In both cases computerized tomography was very helpful in localizing the foreign bodies and the sequelae. In such cases a subperiosteal surgical approach provides good exposure and minimizes the damage to the orbital contents. A high degree of suspicion of penetration of the orbit is essential in tree branch injuries of the eyelids.

[Unusual courses of orbit-floor-fracture (author's transl)].

Blunt trauma can lead to intra-orbital haemorrhage, which cause motility and sensibility disturbances typically found also in orbit-floor fracture. When there is also a fracture present, it can be problematic to give the function deficiencies their right causes. Spontaneous improvement of the defiencies can be expected in a reasonable percentage of cases. Operative revision therefore should not be performed in cases of doubt, or in any case not earlier than 14 days after the injury. In a severe stove-in orbit with enophthalmos and double vision the operation should be preformed within the firs…

Spin-orbit coupling, orbitally entangled antiferromagnetic order, and collective spin-orbital excitations inSr2VO4.

With electron fillingn = 1 in theSr2VO4compound, the octahedrally coordinatedt2gorbitals are strongly active when the tetragonal distortion induced crystal field is tuned by external agent such as pressure. Considering the full range of crystal field induced tetragonal splitting in a realistic three-orbital model, collective spin-orbital excitations are investigated using the generalized self-consistent plus fluctuation approach. At ambient pressure, an entangled orbital + antiferromagnetic order is found to be stabilized beyond a critical value (∼30 meV) of spin-orbit coupling which is in the…

Where is the orbit? Definition of orbital septum attachment sites.

UNLABELLED: The orbit is defined as the space posterior to the orbital septum. While the orbital septum's attachment to the bone and soft tissues in the superior and inferior regions has been well documented, its attachment in the medial and lateral canthal areas remains controversial. Consequently, the definition of the orbit in these regions is uncertain. In this study, we aim to precisely define the orbital area. SUPERIOR AREA: The orbital septum originates from the arcus marginalis and attaches to the levator aponeurosis several millimeters above the upper tarsal plate. INFERIOR AREA: It…

Orbital Rashba Effect as a Platform for Robust Orbital Photocurrents.

Orbital current has emerged over the past years as one of the key novel concepts in magnetotransport. Here, we demonstrate that laser pulses can be used to generate large and robust nonrelativistic orbital currents in systems where the inversion symmetry is broken by the orbital Rashba effect. By referring to model and first principles tools, we demonstrate that orbital Rashba effect, accompanied by crystal field splitting, can mediate robust orbital photocurrents without a need for spin-orbit interaction even in metallic systems. We show that such nonrelativistic orbital photocurrents are tra…
