BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of retained primary teeth (RPT) associated with delayed permanent tooth eruption and the factors associated with this condition in German children.
METHODS: This is a cross-sectional retrospective study that evaluated panoramic radiographs from orthodontic patients. The diagnosis of RPT was established according to Nolla developmental stage. The primary tooth was considered retained when its successor permanent tooth was in Nolla stage 8, 9, or 10. Statistical analysis was performed with an α of 5% (p < 0.05).
RESULTS: A total of 102 ch

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to use cone-beam computed tomography to quantitatively evaluate skeletal expansion and alveolar tipping of the maxilla at the maxillary canine (C1), first premolar (P1), second premolar (P2), and first molar (M1) after rapid maxillary expansion (RME). The transverse effects to the maxillary suture, nasal width, and maxillary sinus were also assessed.
METHODS: Thirty consecutive patients (17 boys, 13 girls; mean age, 13.8 +/- 1.7 years) who required RME with Hyrax appliances as part of their comprehensive orthodontic treatment were studied. Measureme

BACKGROUND: Coronal resorption is a coronal degeneration of enamel and dentine in which ultimately the crown is replaced by vascular connective tissue through a defect in the enamel organ of an unerupted tooth. This is also known as pre-eruptive coronal resorption. However, the aetiology of resorption remains unclear.
CASE REPORT: A 13 years 7 months old Caucasian boy who attended an orthodontic consultation for anterior crossbite correction presented with idiopathic pre-eruptive coronal resorption of an erupted right maxillary permanent canine (FDI 13). Clinically, the enamel remaining on th

The aim of this study is to assess whether operculectomy in patients with retained second molars eases spontaneous tooth eruption in respect to untreated controls. Two hundred and twenty-two patients with delayed eruption of at least one second molar were selected from the archives of the Department of Orthodontics, Milan, Italy. Eighty-eight patients, 40 males and 48 females (mean age 14.8 ± 1.3 years), met the inclusion criteria. Records were then divided into case and control groups. The case group consisted of patients that underwent removal of the overlaying mucosa over second molars (i.e

BACKGROUND: Impacted maxillary canines are likely to be extracted in adult patients once orthodontic treatment is ruled out. The missing teeth are generally replaced with dental implants.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The authors report the clinical case of a 45-year-old man who was missing the maxillary left canine for 30 years. Radiographic examination revealed that the maxillary permanent left canine was palatally impacted. The tooth was transplanted into the prepared socket on the missing tooth site and secured in the desired position with a flexible wire splint. During the 7-year follow-up, the toot

Dental transposition is the positional interchange of two adjacent teeth. Canine transpositions are usually accompanied by other dental anomalies, such as: impaction of the incisors; missing teeth; peg-shaped lateral incisors; severe rotation or malposition of adjacent teeth; dilacerations; and malformations. Local pathologic processes, such as tumors, cysts, retained primary canines, and supernumerary teeth, might be responsible for canine transposition. The purpose of this paper was to present a rare case of maxillary canine-to-maxillary incisor transposition in an 8-year-old girl. The patie

This article presents five cases of an unusual dental anomaly--transposition of mandibular canine and lateral incisor. While every one of the presented cases had its individual characteristics, there are certain common traits. For instance, deciduous canines are usually retained, and the anomaly is found concurrent with other dental problems, such as congenital absence of teeth or peg-shaped lateral incisors. Many transposition cases also have a severe arch length discrepancy, which in itself may be an etiologic factor. In two of our cases orthodontic management included extraction of the tran

Radiation therapy for patients with head and neck cancer can have damaging effects on oral health, including reduced salivary flow. In this case report, a 58-year-old patient had previously undergone radiation therapy for stage II squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx. Symptoms of xerostomia persisted, and her dentition suffered as a result. Problems included moderate to severe loss of tooth structure; erosive pitting lesions on the cusp tips of posterior teeth; and attrition throughout her dentition, particularly in the anterior. To achieve the esthetic, functional, and biomechanical goals of

INTRODUCTION: The position of the canine has a key role in facial harmony, dental aesthetics, functional occlusion, and health of temperomandibular joint. Maxillary canine impaction is the second most common tooth after third molars impaction. Maxillary canines are more prone to impaction due to longer path of eruption.
SETTINGS AND DESIGN: All the patients were examined in the Dental Chair light and referred to the department of Oral Radiology for Orthopantomogram. Yamamoto's classification was used to classify maxillary canine impaction. Position of mandibular canine from cement-enamel junc

We performed orthodontic treatment, fitted prostheses, and provided restorative treatment in a patient with Bloch-Sulzberger syndrome and cleft lip and palate during the early mixed dentition period. We report the case after a subsequent 6-year retention phase including the period of pubertal growth. A girl aged 8 years 4 months visited our hospital with the chief complaint of crowding of the anterior teeth and anterior crossbite. She had bilateral cleft lip, alveolus, and palate; a Class II molar relationship; winging of both the maxillary bilateral central incisors; and spacing in the mandib

The purpose of the present retrospective study was to analyze treatment choice and outcome in patients with retention/impaction of the mandibular second molar. Radiographic material, from three large clinics, from 106 patients (60 males and 46 females) with 126 retained/impacted permanent mandibular second molars treated during the years 1985-2005 was evaluated for treatment choice and treatment outcome. Follow-up questionnaires were sent to dentists in cases where treatment outcome could not be determined from the radiographic material. Clinical evaluation was not possible as the patients wer

This article presents a new approach to cleft lip and cleft palate repair, where the retained bulk of alveolar cleft grafts is augmented by simultaneous cartilage augmentation of the deficient maxilla. Nine patients who provided 10 cleft sites underwent secondary bone grafting of the clefted alveolus by this technique. This study evaluates the following: (1) the postoperative esthetic results, (2) the quantity of bone in the grafted area, and (3) the provision of bone support for unerupted teeth, for teeth adjacent to the cleft, and for orthodontic tooth movement when the secondary bone grafti

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a chronic, progressive, multifactorial, life-threatening disorder that causes significant impact on patient's life. Patients with OSA [Apnea/Hypopnea Index (AHI)>30] who cannot tolerate Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy or are not surgical candidates may benefit from oral appliances. This paper describes interim appliance devised from existing Hawley's retainer in patients with OSA. A 38-year-old man of athletic built with history of orthodontic treatment six months back due to esthetic concerns and wearing upper Hawley's retainer, reported wit

Orthodontic treatment, like any aspect of general dentistry, exposes the clinician to the risk of malpractice and litigation. While for orthodontists this issue has not been a major concern over the last century, risk management has, over the last decade, become a significant issue in orthodontic practice. The patient-orthodontist contact may be classified into pre-treatment, active treatment and post-treatment periods. Risk management issues pertinent to each time period are discussed in this article with the intention of increasing the clinician's awareness of potential problems. Armed with

Interdisciplinary treatment was used for an adult patient born with complete bilateral cleft lip and palate. He had a severe maxillary deficiency with a wide cleft involving the alveolar and maxillary bone and palate. Reconstruction of the arches and occlusion in patients who missed the optimal treatment time is a difficult task for orthodontists. The clinical examination showed severe hypogenesis of the maxillary bone with a total crossbite. The maxillary dental arch was extremely narrow, and the maxillary incisors showed extensive caries caused by improper oral hygiene. Fixed and removable e

A hopeless tooth from a periodontal point of view, with severe bone resorption, mobility and abnormal tooth migration, is often extracted. In advanced cases, function and esthetics are impaired, and an interdisciplinary treatment is requested. Retaining or not these teeth is based on clinician judgment. A growing body of evidence claims that prognosis has great potential to be improved in a motivated patient with good oral hygiene and regular maintenance. This case report aims to present a periodontal regenerative technique combining enamel matrix protein derivatives and a particulated xenogra
