Marfan syndrome-an orthodontic perspective.

Marfan syndrome is a heritable disorder of connective tissue that can affect the heart, blood vessels, lungs, eyes, bones, and ligaments. It is characterized by tall stature, elongated extremities, scoliosis, and a protruded or caved-in breastbone. Patients typically have a long, narrow face. A high-arched palate produced by a narrow maxilla and skeletal Class II malocclusion due to mandibular retrognathia are other common features. For a patient with no family history of the disorder, at least three body systems must be affected before a diagnosis can be made. Individuals affected by the synd

[Orthodontic treatment and mechanical stress].

In orthodontic treatment, the role of periodontal ligament is essential for the teeth to move within the alveolar process against the mechanical stress. Mesenchymal stem cells that differentiate to chondrocytes, adipocytes, and nerve cells is known to exist in the PDL. In both process of physiological and orthodontic tooth movement, bone resorption mainly occurs at the anterior region toward the direction of tooth movement, and bone apposition/formation at the posterior region to the direction of the tooth movement, and bone turnover occurs locally and site specifically, which results in const

Asymmetry of the face in orthodontic patients.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the laterality of the normal asymmetry of the human face, examining differences in laterality in relation to sex, growth stage, and skeletal classification. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 1800 Japanese subjects (651 males and 1149 females; mean age, 15 years 3 months; range, 4 years 2 months to 59 years 11 months) were selected. Individuals in the sample were categorized according to sex, one of three growth stages, and one of three skeletal patterns. Differences in length between distances from the points at which ear rods were inserted to the facial midline and

[Iatrogenic effects of orthodontic therapy].

Iatrogenic effects of orthodontic treatment are root resorption, pulpal changes, decalcifications and white spots, gingival and periodontal changes, enamel surface changes, temporomandibular dysfunction, immunological reactions, pain and discomfort, and accidents. The authors discuss these items and give, if possible, tips to prevent or reduce these effects.

Sources of stress for orthodontic practitioners.

This paper aims to examine and highlight the difference between sources of stress and burn-out. The first part of the paper examines stress and the second part looks at the concept of burn-out with reference to how orthodontists compare with other dental professionals.

[Adverse effects of orthodontic treatment].

The authors reviewed the adverse effects. The main effects are: demineralisation; gingivitis hyperplastica, mucogingival and marginal attachment bone loss, long-term-effects; pulp damage and devitalisation of teeth; apical and marginal root resorption; temporomandibular dysfunction.

Extractions in support of orthodontic treatment.

Extractions in support of orthodontic therapy may be done in any combination of teeth. The more common extraction patterns are: 1. Maxillary and mandibular first premolars; 2. Maxillary first and mandibular second premolars; 3. Maxillary and mandibular second premolars; 4. Maxillary first premolar; 5. Maxillary second permanent molar; 6. Maxillary first permanent molars; 7. Maxillary permanent lateral incisors; 8. Mandibular permanent incisors; or 9. Any possible combination and variation for other considerations. Extractions have been proven to support changes in the profile, helping in the a

Nickel hypersensitivity in the orthodontic patient.

Nickel is one of the most common causes of allergic contact dermatitis and produces more allergic reactions than all other metals combined. … sts were conducted to confirm hypersensitivity to nickel. Twenty-nine patients from the Division of Orthodontics, Albert Einstein/Montefiore Medical Center were tested, ranging in age from 12 to 48 years. Of the 29 patients, there were 18 female and 11 males. Five of the patients had a positive nickel patch test, a rate of 18.5%. The five patients that tested …

[Orthodontic studies in mouth breathing].

The diagnosis of dental malocclusions and skeletal deformities associated with an oral mode of breathing, requires a comprehensive orthodontic examination. The importance of dental occlusion and the skeletal morphology is stressed. Lateral sliding of the mandible when the centric occlusion shows the first contact in a cusp-to-cusp relationship; unilateral or bilateral cross-bite, due to the underdevelopment of the maxillary; the sagittal relationship of the jaws (class 1, 2 or 3); a vertical excess of the anterior facial height with postero-rotation of the mandible and open bite context. Tooth eruption and orthodontic movement.

Teeth have been moved in man for centuries and the process of tooth eruption has occurred presumably since he evolved. The cellular and molecular mechanisms which are involved in these two phenomena are amongst the most intriguing questions in dental research today. The aim of this paper is to review some of the theories which have been proposed to explain the two processes. It is also intended to place in context the contribution being made by biological sciences, which might explain tooth eruption and tooth movement. It is not the intention to describe morphologic observations which are well

[Orthodontic consequences of mouth-breathing].

Mouth breathing habits are frequently associated with orthodontic problems. In the nasal area, the lack of ventilation leads to an underdevelopment of the maxilla: lateral and sometimes anterior cross bites appear. In the buccal area, the want of maintaining the mouth opened induces a new postural position of the mandible which alters the pattern of growth of the mandible ("long face"). The functional context of the buccal praxis is also altered: low or protruded tongue, deviant swallowing, troubles of speech.... The treatment of this pathological context needs a pluridisciplinary approach whe

[Orthodontic aspects of third molars].

This paper deals with an orthodontic approach of the third molars. A technique was presented with the purpose of predicting the space available for eruption and occlusion. A review of the literature led to the conclusion that the third molars do play a role during the anterior crowding process but it is not considered as its main etiological factor. Enucleation of third lower molars at early age is suggested when space is not adequate for its further eruption.

Tissue reaction to orthodontic adhesives.

The widespread introduction of materials for direct bonding into practices and the numerous reports of a variety of toxic reactions to similar materials prompted a study of the toxicity of six adhesives in an animal model. Thirty-nine hamsters were employed to evaluate responses of skin, oral mucosa, and gingiva, sites of possible contamination by adhesives in clinical use. Animals were treated topically with separate components of adhesives. Adhesives were also allowed to polymerize on and remain in contact with tissues. Test sites were examined grossly and histologically and evaluated for to

Corrosion of orthodontic bracket bases.

Attention has recently been focused on the development of black and green stains in association with directly bonded stainless steel brackets. Twelve clinical cases of staining were studied in this investigation. After intraoral photography of the stains, the brackets were removed for examination with the scanning electron microscope. Multiple voids were observed at the resin-bracket interface, especially at the periphery. Considerable deterioration of the alloy base and mesh structure was observed in the void areas. Preliminary analysis of the stains showed that chromium compounds were presen
