OBJECTIVE: Orthodontists do not perform surgical procedures, nevertheless they are obliged to practice appropriate sterilization techniques to prevent cross-infection. This is also important from an ethical and legal point of view. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the compliance of orthodontists to infection control procedures in Turkey.
METHODS: A questionnaire with 36 items was delivered by e-mail to a total of 1152 orthodontists/residents between October 2014 and March 2015 by the Turkish Orthodontic Society. Various data from surveys were analyzed using the IBM SPSS statistics

This article summarises recently updated guidelines produced by the Clinical Governance Directorate of the British Orthodontic Society through the Clinical Standards Committee of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, Royal College of Surgeons of England (FDSRCS) on the extraction of first permanent molars in children. The first permanent molar is susceptible to chronological enamel defects, molar-incisor hypomineralisation and caries, which may necessitate enforced extraction in the developing dentition. In the right circumstances, the extraction of these teeth can be followed by successful eruption

Vertical maxillary asymmetry (VMA) is a condition characterized by distinct morphologic features: dentoalveolar asymmetry, canted nasal floor and occlusal plane, and asymmetric lip elevation. An extensive literature search failed to produce depictions of differential vertical asymmetry in conditions other than specific congenital or pathologic symptoms, the most prominent of which are presented in this report for comparison with VMA. The records of nine patients illustrate the localized nasal/maxillary/occlusal vertical asymmetry, which does not affect the orbits or the mandible. Although a pr

In crowded dental arches, the permanent lateral incisors often erupt and resorb the mesial portion of the root of deciduous canines, causing their premature loss. Therefore, knowledge on clinical aspects related to etiologic factors is necessary to pediatric orthodontists and clinical dentists for diagnosis and treatment with regard to incisor crowding and adjustment. The aim of the present study was to describe a clinical case characterized by the unilateral loss of a lower deciduous canine, offering clinical considerations on this issue and discussing the various procedures implemented to pr

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Some patients with open bite who have been treated with combined fixed orthodontic appliances and bimaxillary osteotomy relapse in the vertical dimension after the end of treatment following initially successful correction of the vertical dimension. The aim of this study was to identify those parameters that raise the tendency to relapse.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nineteen patients who underwent combined treatment using fixed orthodontic appliances and bimaxillary osteotomy due to open bite (overbite < 0 mm), were examined and documented at least 2 years after surgery.

Unilateral hypoplasia in the middle and lower face has different etiological causes. A standardized interdisciplinary treatment of children is demonstrated with the help of ten operated cases and nine children in observation. Depending on the missing structure of the anatomical regions the areas are reconstructed. A pre- and postoperative orthodontic treatment is part of the concept. With an operative intervention in childhood, it is possible to gain in most cases a more normal appearance till adulthood.

It is corrected by some available orthodontic methods according to its etiologic factors and growth stage. Removable appliances with tongue crib, spring loaded occlusal bite block, M.E.A.W. with rubber elastics, vertical chin cap and high pull head gear are selected for its correction. Extraction is considered for preventing wedging effect and Adenoidectomy is performed as adenoid cause mouth breathing. In the case of treatment of anterior open

The personalized regenerative therapeutic strategies applicable in the structural and functional repair of maxillofacial/dental defects are expected to extend beyond the limits of what is currently possible in the management of dentofacial anomalies and treating malocclusions. The application of undifferentiated stem cells (SCs), including signaling molecule control and individualized tissue engineering based on targeted therapies, has been proposed to overcome therapeutic limitations and complications associated with treatments for craniofacial defects, including severe orthodontic discrepanc

OBJECTIVE: To describe radiographic changes caused by molar intrusion with or without retention methods in rats.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty 12-week-old male rats were assigned to six groups (n = 5 each). Molar intrusion was achieved with an intrusion spring to two maxillary molars for 2 weeks. The control group underwent the same experimental conditions, but without the intrusion spring. The intrusion and control groups were then euthanized. In four groups, the intrusion spring was disengaged after intrusion and the new molar positions were either retained or not with an occlusal bite-bl

AIMS: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is a developmental disorder caused by maternal alcohol intake (prevalence: 0.77%). Malocclusion has been described in case reports of patients with FASD, but reliable evidence for associations between FASD and malocclusion is not documented. Malocclusion is defined as tooth irregularity (prevalence: 14.6%) or incorrect relationship between the jaws such as lateral crossbites (prevalence: 3.1%). The purpose of this study was to investigate possible associations between malocclusion and FASD.
SHORT SUMMARY: FASD prevalence is high and diagnosis is ve

INTRODUCTION: Individual predisposition might be a major reason for the observed variation in apical orthodontic root resorption. If so, resorption might be expressed during the initial stages of orthodontic therapy in patients at risk.
METHODS: To explore this hypothesis, we evaluated standardized, digitized periapical radiographs made before treatment (T1) and at a mean period of 6.4 months (SD 0.9) after placement of maxillary incisor brackets (T2) in 290 patients (age range, 10.1 to 57.1 years at T1). Anamnestic and treatment parameters were recorded according to a protocol, and maxillary

Introduction: White spots are a common complication of orthodontic treatment. Several prevention methods such as fluoride therapy and laser irradiation have been proposed, but there is still no conclusive evidence. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the combined application of diode laser and fluoride varnish in preventing white spots. Methods: Thirty-nine sound human premolars were extracted for orthodontic purposes and randomly divided into three groups of thirteen teeth each (C: Control, FV: fluoride varnish (5% sodium fluoride), and FV+L: fluoride varnish+980 nm diode laser (2 W)). The timing of orthodontic interventions has been a contentious topic for many years with early treatment to address or indeed to prevent skeletal discrepancies in all three spatial planes and to alleviate crowding in common practice. In terms of effectiveness, however, broadly speaking early intervention has not been shown to be superior to later intervention. As such, in view of the additional burden and duration of early intervention, the weight of evidence points to reserving early treatment for localized problems and specific situations with definitive treatment typically initiated in the

A case is presented of a young boy with cleidocranial dysplasia, whose multiple supernumerary teeth prevented the eruption of most of his permanent teeth. His maxillary incisor teeth failed to erupt following removal of anterior supernumerary elements and orthodontic traction. Lack of abutment teeth and a difficult maxillary base made prosthetic treatment almost impossible. A horseshoe acrylic denture retained by milled crowns bonded to the deciduous canines and a maxillary first molar proved a very successful restoration. The problems of treating this group of patients are discussed.

Periodontal disease and chronic gingivitis/stomatitis are the most common feline dental diseases. With routine dental care and increased emphasis on home oral hygiene, these diseases can be controlled. Cats can be seen with a number of other dental disorders, and improved treatment methods such as restorations of early subgingival resorptive lesions, endodontic therapy, and orthodontic therapy can be performed successfully. More study and research are necessary about the gingivitis/stomatitis syndrome and subgingival resorptive lesions so that improved prevention and treatment recommendations

Daily oral hygiene is a matter-of-course. However, many people disregard the difficulties of effective cleansing of the dentition and need to be made aware of the problems; in everyday practice, more attention must be given to detailed individual instruction and recall. A systematic order of cleansing, the use of the proper instruments in the proper way and particularly the avoidance of traumatic forces are important to prevent damaging side effects, such as gingival recession, abrasion and erosion. Patients with periodontal problems are in need of conscientious instruction after their initial

Incorrectly produced speech sounds, the presence of dentofacial alterations and acquired functional adaptations may be due to a short and inadequate lingual frenum. When frenectomy is indicated, it should be performed as early as possible to prevent functional alterations. This study presents a literature review on correct lingual positioning in relation to orthodontic and phonetic function as well as an assessment of 15 patients who underwent frenectomy utilizing the carbon dioxide laser. The results demonstrated that this technique is safe, effective and perfect for use in young children and

Although anesthetic and functional problems created by fused primary teeth are relatively transient, occlusal development should be monitored to prevent abnormal delays in the eruption of the permanent successors. This report describes an unusual case in which horizontal impaction of the permanent mandibular left lateral incisor was associated with fusion of the primary mandibular left lateral incisor and canine. After the fused primary tooth was extracted, the impacted lateral incisor was able to erupt without the aid of orthodontic forces. Early detection eliminated the need for surgical int

Although orthognathic surgery has now become a routine part of oral and maxillofacial surgery practice, concern and apprehension about major jaw surgery continues to plague the minds of many orthodontists faced with the prospect of referring their patients for surgery. Like all surgery, complications also occur with orthognathic procedures, most of which can be prevented by thorough planning and careful surgery. In this article a brief overview of the potential complications associated with orthognathic surgery is presented for the benefit of orthodontists involved in the management of patient

A case report is presented of an adult with a crowded Class II, Division I subdivision left malocclusion. There was a moderate arch length deficiency in both arches. All four canines were prominent and had gingival recession. The patient's profile necessitated nonextraction treatment. Free gingival grafts were placed to prevent further recession and the Class II relationship and crowding were resolved with a positive profile change. [This case was presented to the American Board of Orthodontics in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the certification process conducted by the board.]
