[The smile and dento-facial orthopaedics].

INTRODUCTION: The mouth is an essential feature of the human body since it is there that the breath and food of life pass. In addition, it bears witness to our emotions. Today, the smile has become a major means of communication and of "self-affirmation". OBJECTIVE: The first task of the orthodontist is to restore correct function while, obviously, also contributing to enhance the patient's appearance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this article, we will present six cases to demonstrate that the leading mission of orthodontics is to restore the occlusion and function.

Successful orthodontic-surgical treatment: aiming for esthetics and function. Analysis of some clinical cases.

Adult patients who consult an orthodontist are looking for dental rehabilitation underpinned by an implicit esthetic demand, which needs to be analyzed. When the discrepancy involves more than the teeth and cannot be corrected by dentoalveolar compensation alone, there is a need, on account of the lack of growth, the periodontal setting and underlying dysfunctions, for an orthodontic-surgical solution. A clear understanding of the required future functional balance will help achieve a satisfactory esthetic target and give stable, lasting results.

Identical unerupted maxillary incisors in monozygotic twins.

Mesiodens is the most common type of supernumerary tooth found in the premaxilla. It might be discovered by the orthodontist by chance on a radiograph or as the cause of an unerupted maxillary central incisor. The genetic transmission of supernumerary and impacted teeth is poorly understood. The occurrence of identical unerupted maxillary central incisors and mesiodentes in monozygotic twins suggests that genetic factors might influence the etiology of this problem. In this case report, we discuss the treatment of unerupted maxillary permanent incisors caused by mesiodentes in monozygotic twin

Evaluation of crown-root angulation of lateral incisors adjacent to palatally impacted canines.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study is to explore differences in crown-to-root angulation between lateral incisors adjacent to palatally impacted canines (PICs) and lateral incisors adjacent to normally erupted canines (NECs). METHODS: Orthodontic records of 100 subjects (51 with PICs and 49 with NECs) were reviewed. Crown-to-root angulations of all lateral incisors were measured manually on the final panoramic radiographs. Also, three experienced orthodontists were asked to visually inspect the morphology of the lateral incisors on the panoramic radiographs. A mixed model was used to tes…

Impact of Bone-Grafting Materials on the Rate of Orthodontic Tooth Movement: A Systematic Review.

Orthodontists may encounter patients with alveolar bony defects, which are often treated with various bone-grafting materials. The effects of different bone-grafting materials on orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) are of concern to orthodontists. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the current status of the literature that reports on the effects of different bone-grafting materials on OTM in terms of the rate and side effects. An electronic search of the PubMed and Scopus databases and Google Scholar was performed. Two reviewers independently conducted the screening process using COVIDENCE™, and a t…

Class II Malocclusion Treatment by In-House Fabricated, Customized Fixed Functional Appliance in Growing Child.

Currently, wide arrays of fixed functional appliances are available for the correction of Class II malocclusion. The orthodontist must choose from these appliances depending on the mechanics, efficiency, and cost of the appliance. Fixed functional appliances may reduce the individual visits and hence the cost as compared to the removable appliances. Additionally, it may save the clinician's chair time. This report discussed the in-house laboratory fabrication and clinical procedure of customized fixed functional appliances by utilizing the readily available dental materials in the orthodontic

Orthognathic Surgery-LeFort I Osteotomy.

Orthognathic surgery is a complex type of facial surgery that can have a profound impact on a patient's occlusal function and facial aesthetics. Close collaboration between the maxillofacial surgeon and an orthodontist is required, and the surgical team must have a strong foundation in facial analysis and firm understanding of the maxillofacial skeleton to achieve surgical success. Herein, we review the maxillary LeFort I osteotomy as it pertains to orthognathic surgery, with particular attention to the indications, contraindications, preoperative assessment, surgical technique, and possible c

Clinician Corner- A Simple and Efficient Modified Goshgarian Arch ("T" Arch) Appliance for Correcting Single Tooth Scissor Bite.

Scissor bite is a rare form of malocclusion that is often accompanied by varying degrees of facial asymmetry. Correction and treatment of scissor bite in posterior teeth is a challenging job for an orthodontist. There are several treatment options for correction of scissor bite in posterior teeth but some have their own ill-effects on the dentition thus contributing further to the problem and some require patient compliance which compromises the outcome of the treatment. Therefore to overcome these drawbacks we have designed a new appliance to correct the molar scissor bite.

Freeman-Sheldon syndrome: a case report.

Freeman-Sheldon syndrome is a rare hereditary disorder characterised by three basic abnormalities, namely microstomia, camptodactyly with ulnar deviation of the fingers, and clubfoot. The majority of these patients have microstomia and dental crowding, making oral hygiene difficult and increasing the risk of caries. Treatment of these patients requires a coordinated effort by a team of specialists, including a paediatrician, an anaesthesiologist, a plastic surgeon, a paediatric dentist, and an orthodontist. Herein, we describe dental problems of a child with Freeman-Sheldon syndrome and the tr

Root resorption following treatment with aligners.

Can orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption (OIIRR) be the result of Invisalign treatment? Since OIIRR was first described in the literature, orthodontists have been looking for a treatment procedure where no root shortening will occur. In the past decade, Invisalign orthodontic treatment has become very popular, and there is no description of OIIRR after this treatment. Therefore, it might be incorrectly concluded that the body is immune to this type of orthodontic treatment modality and no OIIRR appears as a result of this treatment. The following case report demonstrates an asp…
