BACKGROUNDS: Impingement is a risk factor for instability and prosthetic failure following total hip arthroplasty (THA). If the periacetabular osteophytes are not removed at surgery, impingement could occur between the osteophytes and the femoral stem following THA. However, excessive removal of the osteophytes could lead to bleeding from the bone. The aim of our study, therefore, was to locate the site of the impingement and to determine the width of tolerable osteophytes, which does not induce impingement during activities of daily living (ADL), using a three-dimensional simulation.

We describe an unusual and rare case of isolated left hypoglossal nerve palsy secondary to compression from a prominent degenerative osteophyte from the left atlanto-occipital joint. The hypoglossal nerve is a purely motor cranial nerve innervating the tongue musculature. Palsy of the hypoglossal nerve is frequently associated with other cranial nerve palsies and can be related to vascular, neoplastic, infectious or traumatic conditions. Isolated hypoglossal nerve palsy is quite rare and very few cases have been reported in the literature to date.

Few reports to date have discussed acute deltoid muscle injury, including partial or complete deltoid muscle detachment from its origin. The present report describes a different pathomechanism and clinical manifestations of deltoid muscle injury. A 52-year-old man experienced acute severe pain in the right shoulder as a result of abrupt elevation of the arm. The deltoid muscle had apparently been scratched by an osteophyte on the greater tuberosity. After arthroscopic excision of the osteophyte, the symptoms resolved completely.
