A study to determine the causes of deafness was done in Kumasi in central Ghana. A total of 128 deaf children aged between 1-5 years referred to the Ear, Nose and Throat clinic at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) were seen from January 1992 to June 1993. The procedure adopted included exploration and assessment of individual medical history, otoscopy, pre-audiometric and audiometric evaluation. Thunderbolt strike is a life-threatening entity. In the patients presenting with thunderbolt strike, the central nervous system and the cardiovascular system should be primarily evaluated, followed by tympanic membrane lesions. The most important symptom connected with ear is the loss of hearing. In this report, a 43-year-old male patient with unilateral tympanic membrane perforation, tinnitus, and bilateral sensorineural hearing loss caused by thunderbolt strike is presented through a review of the literature.

We present a rare case of pediatric conductive hearing loss due to a high lateralized jugular bulb. An 8-year-old boy with a right-sided conductive hearing loss of 40 dB was found to have a pink bulge toward the inferior part of the right eardrum. Computed tomography showed a high, lateralized right jugular bulb that had a superolaterally pointing diverticulum that bulged into the lower mesotympanum and posterior external auditory meatus. It was explained to the child's parents that it is important never to put any sharp objects into the ears because of the risk of injury to the jugular vein.

STUDY DESIGN: Clinical capsule report.
SETTING: University hospital.
PATIENTS: Two patients presented with intermittent tinnitus synchronous with eye closing or blinking. Otoscopic examination revealed inward movement of tympanic membranes concomitantly with eye blinking or eye closure in 1 patient. Neither patient had facial nerve disease or myoclonus.

CASE REPORT: We report a case of a nasopharyngeal cylindrical cell papilloma in a 56-year-old man who presented with a four-month history of right-sided hearing loss, otalgia, vertigo and tinnitus. Investigation revealed a soft, nodular lesion obstructing the pharyngeal opening of the right eustachian tube; this was treated by wide endoscopic excision.

This article presents accounts of two patients with cholesteatoma of the tympanic part of the temporal bone, located immediately lateral to the tympanic annulus (and with an intact tympanic membrane). The lesions were located deep in the anterior and inferior walls of the canal, especially in the vaginal process of the tympanic part. These more severe cases required surgical correction (removal of the sac of cholesteatoma) with very good results. Pathogenesis and differential diagnosis are discussed.

The combined Heermann and Tos (CHAT) technique is the combination of Heermann's 'cartilage palisade tympanoplasty' and Tos's 'modified combined approach tympanoplasty = modified intact canal wall mastoidectomy'.
