Validation of the EuroQol 5 Dimension 5 Level index (EQ-5D-5L) as a measure of high impact chronic pain.

Chronic pain (CP) that significantly impacts a person's life, known as high impact chronic pain (HICP), is an important measure of CP consequences. The aims of this study were to propose EuroQol 5 Dimension 5 level index (EQ-5D-5L) cutpoints to identify HICP in a cross-sectional discovery dataset (UK Biobank Experience of Pain survey (EOP)) and to validate in an external dataset (the Multiple Integration and Data Annotation Study (MIDAS)). 83,062 EOP participants with CP were included in this analysis. Optimal cutpoints of the EQ-5D-5L for estimating three different definitions of HICP were ge

Item generation for a new patient-reported outcome measure: The non-traumatic anterior knee pain (AKP)-YOUTH scale.

BACKGROUND: Non-traumatic anterior knee pain affects one in every five adolescents. Despite the commonality of the condition, there are no patient-reported outcome measures developed specifically for this population. The aim of this study was to identify domains and develop a preliminary item bank for adolescents with non-traumatic anterior knee pain. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-one adolescents with anterior knee pain participated in semi-structured interviews which explored their experience of living with knee pain. Following thematic analysis, we generated an item bank based on the domains which e

Walking a day in a pachyonychia congenita patient's shoes: Impact on plantar pain and activity levels measured with wristband activity trackers.

Background Plantar keratoderma is a common finding in pachyonychia congenita, significantly impairing ambulation and quality of life. Due to the variation of pain reporting in pachyonychia congenita clinical studies, it is difficult to evaluate the efficacy of treatment outcomes for painful plantar keratodermas. Objectives To objectively analyse associations between plantar pain and activity levels in pachyonychia congenita patients using a wristband tracker. Methods Pachyonychia congenita patients and matched normal controls wore wristband activity trackers and completed a daily digital surve

Core Synergies Measured with Ultrasound in Subjects with Chronic Non-Specific Low Back Pain and Healthy Subjects: A Systematic Review.

Low back pain represents the leading cause of disability since 1990. In 90% of cases, it is classified as non-specific low back pain, being chronic in 10% of subjects. Ultrasound has proven to be an effective measurement tool to observe changes in the activity and morphology of the abdominal muscles. This article reviews which core synergies are studied with ultrasound in healthy subjects and with chronic non-specific low back pain. A systematic review was conducted on studies analyzing synergies between two or more core muscles. Publications from 2005 until July 2021 were identified by perfor

Effects of the addition of transcutaneous electrical stimulation to non-pharmacological measures in labor pain: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Labor, although natural and physiological, is a period that can be marked by stress, pain, anxiety, suffering, fear, and anguish for a woman. Thus, non-pharmacological methods that reduce pain during labor are important to allow a better experience without the use of medications. Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of non-pharmacological pain relief methods, added or not to the application of transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TENS), on pain, satisfaction with the childbirth, duration of labor, and newborn conditions. METHODS: This is a randomized contr

Pain and numbness one month after carpal tunnel release predict patient-reported outcome measures at sixth months.

A number of outcome predictors for carpal tunnel release (CTR) for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) have been reported. However, some predictors are controversial, and few studies have referred to the early postoperative outcome prognostic factors after CTR. The aim of this study was to investigate whether pain and numbness at 1 month post-CTR were early postoperative predictors of clinical outcomes 6 months after surgery. Pain and numbness were evaluated using the visual analog scale (VAS) preoperatively and at 1 month post-surgery. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), including the Quick D

Unintended consequences of COVID-19 safety measures on patients with chronic knee pain forced to defer joint replacement surgery.

In recent months, with the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, the American College of Surgeons and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officially recommended the delay of nonemergency procedures until the public health crisis is resolved. Deferring elective joint replacement surgeries for an unknown period is likely to decrease the incidence of infection with SARS-CoV-2 but is likely to have detrimental effects in individuals suffering from chronic knee pain. These detrimental effects extend beyond the discomfort of osteoarthritis (OA) and the inconvenience of rescheduling sur

Symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalopathy are not determined by activity pacing when measured by the chronic pain coping inventory.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalopathy (CFS/ME) is a chronic illness which can cause significant fatigue, pain and disability. Activity pacing is frequently advocated as a beneficial coping strategy, however, it is unclear whether pacing is significantly associated with symptoms in people with CFS/ME. The first aim of this study was therefore to explore the cross-sectional associations between pacing and levels of pain, disability and fatigue. The second aim was to explore whether changes in activity pacing following participation in a symptom management programme were rel

PROMIS Pain Interference and Physical Function Scores Correlate With the Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM) in Patients With Hallux Valgus.

BACKGROUND: Traditional patient-reported outcome instruments like the Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM) quantify patient disability but often are limited by responder burden and incomplete questionnaires. The Patient-Reported Outcome Measurement Information System (PROMIS) overcomes such obstacles through computer-adaptive technology and can capture outcome data from various domains including physical and psychosocial function. Prior work has compared the FAAM with PROMIS physical function; however, there is little evidence comparing the association between foot and ankle-specific tools li
