PURPOSE: To compare Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer (HVF) and Frequency Doubling Perimetry (FDP) testing in the diagnosis of early glaucoma.
METHODS: We performed HVF (24-2 standard full threshold) and FDP (N-30) evaluations in 34 consecutive patients with early primary glaucoma and 96 normal subjects. Early glaucoma was defined on the basis of disc changes of glaucoma; the mean deviation on white-on-white perimetry had to be no worse than 6 decibels. We report a case of bilateral optic neuropathy presenting with psychiatric symptoms. A 50-year-old woman was admitted with blurry vision in both eyes. She had a 3 months' history of depressed mood. Both optic discs had mild temporal pallor with visible spontaneous venous pulsations. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed a large frontal mass compressing the optic nerves. The tumor was surgically resected, and tissue pathology demonstrated an olfactory groove meningioma.

Mice experimentally envenomed with Hypnale hypnale venom (1× and 1.5×LD₅₀) developed acute kidney injury (AKI) principally characterized by raised blood urea and creatinine. Prolonged blood clotting time and hemorrhage in lungs implied bleeding tendency. Pallor noted in most renal cortices was suggestive of renal ischemia secondary to consumptive coagulopathy. Intravenous infusion of Hemato polyvalent antivenom following experimental envenoming effectively prevented death and AKI in all mice, supporting its potential therapeutic use in envenoming cases.

The authors report a case with idiopathic hypertrophic cranial pachymeningitis associated with intermediate uveitis. The patient complained of decreased vision in both eyes, especially the right. Ophthalmic examination revealed right optic disc pallor, bilateral vitritis, and cystoid macular edema. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed marked enhancement of a dural lesion. The macular edema responded well to medical treatment. Intermediate uveitis has not yet been reported in the context of idiopathic hypertrophic cranial pachymeningitis.

Snakebite is not an uncommon cause of acute renal failure (ARF) in developing countries. We report a12-year-old boy who presented with oliguric ARF following snakebite. He had pallor, icterus, generalized edema, hypertension, and was oliguric. Investigations revealed severe azotemia, microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, prolonged coagulation parameters, and raised fibrin degradation products, suggesting disseminated intravascular coagulation as the cause of ARF. The patient improved with antisnake venom, dialysis, and other supportive treatment.

Diamond-Blackfan anemia is a rare congenital hypoplastic anemia. We report 6 children diagnosed as Diamond-Blackfan anemia at our clinic. All had severe pallor at presentation, with mild hepatomegaly and just palpable spleen in one child. Thumb anomaly was present in one of them. All of them had macrocytic or normocytic anemia with reticulocytopenia, and bone marrow examination revealed marked erythroid hypoplasia. All of them were treated with oral steroids with a good response.

We present an unusual case of popliteal entrapment syndrome type I in an 11-year-old boy. Presenting symptoms were exercise-related pain and pallor in his left lower leg. The diagnosis of popliteal entrapment syndrome was established by acral plethysmography, colour-coded Doppler sonography and MRI. After myotomy of the gastrocnemius muscle the symptoms resolved completely. Post-operative duplex scan showed normal blood flow, even in plantar flexion of the foot.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis (SFN) of the newborn characteristically affects full-term infants who have experienced perinatal distress, such as hypothermia, obstetric trauma, or asphyxia. We report a newborn who had pallor, deep breathing, and severe anemia immediately after birth. She developed SFN on the fourth postnatal day. Her condition improved after blood transfusions and the skin lesions resolved in 6 weeks. This appears to be the first report of SFN associated with anemia.

A woman with a right middle fossa meningioma causing right optic tract atrophy and papilledema had distinctive funduscopic changes. The ipsilateral eye showed temporal disc pallor and nasal edema. The contralateral disc showed edema of the upper and lower poles which was separated by a horizontal band of optic atrophy. The fluorescein angiographic changes clearly illustrate this pattern. Apart from its theoretical interest this appearance of papilledema and atrophy provides definite localizing information.

The six "P" are characteristic clinical symptoms of acute peripheral ischemia. Diagnostic problems can be considered in approximately 33%. Doppler-ultrasound technique is the most frequent method used to verify the clinical diagnosis. Angiography was necessary only in 35% of our cases. Methods of recanalisation are individual and depend on aetiology and localisation of the occlusion. 60-90% of acute ischemic extremities can be saved by new techniques of fibrinolysis and surgery, if the therapy will be carried out within six hours.

Rosai-Dorfman disease is a rare histiocytic proliferative disorder that commonly presents with a massive lymphadenopathy and a variety of constitutional symptoms. Severe hemolytic anemia is an infrequent complication of this disease. Although the etiology of the condition is unknown, infectious agents including viruses have been implicated. We describe a 2-year-old female child who presented with fever, pallor, and generalized lymphadenopathy complicated by the development of autoimmune hemolytic anemia. A review of the literature of this condition is also provided.

Hepatitis A is common in children and usually is a self-limiting disease. Although extrahepatic and hematological immune manifestations following acute hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection have rarely been reported, they are frequently observed in other viral hepatitis. In this paper, we report the case of a 3-year-old girl who developed immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) and hemolytic anemia after HAV infection. She was presented with malaise, pallor, ecchymosis, petechiae and purpura on the trunk and extremities.
