A prospective evaluation of bacterial growth in blood of neonates at risk for early neonatal sepsis was carried on between January 1 st., 1989 and December 31, 1989. From all admissions to Gorgas Military Hospital Neonatal Unit in Ancon, Panama, 11.1% had perinatal risk factors for early sepsis. Fourteen percent (14.1%) had radiologic findings consisting with intrauterine pneumonia, and 1.6% had urinary tract infection. None of them grew any bacteria from blood cultures. The authors examined material from the respiratory tract obtained from 55 patients, with silver Methenamine and Giemsa stains to detect Pneumocystis carinii. Twenty five patients were positive. All had fever and fatigue, 80% had dyspnea, 72% had productive cough, and significant weight loss occurred in 48%. None of the patients had signs of pulmonary consolidation. I report ad libitum data on 18 copulations involving free-ranging black-handed spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) on Barro Colorado Island, Panama. All copulations were performed in a dorsoventral position, as is typically reported for this genus. In order to evaluate the prevalence of human leptospirosis in Reunion island and to identify possible risk factors, a study was realised on a representative population sample of 3.338 persons. The prevalence of leptospirosis, diagnosed by ELISA and confirmed by Micro Agglutination Test, was 1.1%. Male predominance and higher prevalence in rainy parts of the island, were confirmed.
