Leveraging International Influenza Surveillance Systems and Programs during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

A network of global respiratory disease surveillance systems and partnerships has been built over decades as a direct response to the persistent threat of seasonal, zoonotic, and pandemic influenza. These efforts have been spearheaded by the World Health Organization, country ministries of health, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nongovernmental organizations, academic groups, and others. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention worked closely with ministries of health in partner countries and the World Health Organization to leverage in

Identification of clinical and virological correlates associated with influenza A candidate vaccine virus (CVV) attenuation in a ferret model.

UNLABELLED: Influenza A viruses continuously circulate among avian and swine species, posing a persistent threat to public health. The development of influenza candidate vaccine viruses (CVVs) plays a pivotal role in the global strategy for influenza pandemic preparedness. Safety-testing of CVVs for attenuation in ferrets represents a critical step that takes place prior to making these viruses available to vaccine manufacturers. Development of pathogenicity standards is needed to establish acceptable thresholds of disease so that CVV safety can be assessed without the need for comparison to t…

Influenza A/H4N2 mallard infection experiments further indicate zanamivir as less prone to induce environmental resistance development than oseltamivir.

Neuraminidase inhibitors (NAIs) are the gold standard treatment for influenza A virus (IAV). Oseltamivir is mostly used, followed by zanamivir (ZA). NAIs are not readily degraded in conventional wastewater treatment plants and can be detected in aquatic environments. Waterfowl are natural IAV hosts and replicating IAVs could thus be exposed to NAIs in the environment and develop resistance. Avian IAVs form the genetic basis for new human IAVs, and a resistant IAV with pandemic potential poses a serious public health threat, as NAIs constitute a pandemic preparedness cornerstone. Resistance dev…

Covid-19 pandemic induced measures in food industry improves food safety as perceived by food business operators in Finland.

This study examines the response of food business operators (FBOs) to the COVID-19 pandemic in relation to food safety and FBOs' experiences of remote inspections performed by official food control. The study was conducted between November and December 2020 with a web-based questionnaire for food processing businesses in Finland. Most of the 60 responded FBOs had made changes to many own-check sectors such as working hygiene (83.4%) and preparedness for special situations (78.0%). Of the FBOs, 47.1-83.0% assessed that the changes in the own-check sectors had a positive impact on food safety an

Stopping pandemics before they start: Lessons learned from SARS-CoV-2.

The vaccine and drug discovery responses to COVID-19 have worked far better than could have been imagined. Yet by the end of 2021, more than 5 million people had died, and the pandemic continues to evolve and rage globally. This Review will describe how each of the vaccines, antibody therapies, and antiviral drugs that have been approved to date were built on decades of investment in technology and basic science. We will caution that the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus has so far proven a straightforward test of our pandemic preparedness, and we will recommen…

Does the weather play a role in the spread of pandemic influenza? A study of H1N1pdm09 infections in France during 2009-2010.

Understanding patterns of influenza spread and persistence is crucial for pandemic preparedness. The H1N1pdm09 virus caused the first influenza pandemic of the 21st century which resulted in at least 18500 deaths. Based on laboratory-confirmed primary-care case reports we investigated the role of weather conditions and socio-demographic variables in its initial spread and subsequent presence in France. Our findings suggest that low relative humidity and high population density were determinants in shaping the early spread of the virus at the national level. Those conditions also favoured the p…

Expanding adult immunization in low- and middle-income countries through pharmacist-provided vaccination.

Adult immunization is increasingly recognized as an essential component of life-course vaccination strategies that improve population health, promote healthy aging, and strengthen pandemic preparedness. Despite recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO) to expand seasonal influenza vaccination and other adult immunization programs, vaccine coverage among adults in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) remains substantially below global targets. This shortfall is largely due to insufficient healthcare infrastructure, shortages of trained immunization providers, inadequate finan…

The citizen's perception of a shared responsibility during the COVID-19 management: Insights from a focus group study across four European countries.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organisation emphasises the importance of a whole-of-society approach to the management of health emergencies, which includes a need to involve citizens. Yet, little guidance is found on how this should occur and, more importantly, the citizen's current perspective of their role. Understanding citizens' perceptions is the first step in preparing for citizen engagement during a future pandemic. METHODS: A qualitative research study of 16 focus groups comprising 89 participants was conducted in Finland, Slovenia, Spain, and the Netherlands. Four age-stratified focus

Preparedness, awareness and ownership of young future healthcare professionals are associated with their willingness to contribute to health system resilience in a NATO collective defense scenario: a cross-sectional study among medical, nursing and paramedic students in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Russia's war against Ukraine has renewed discussion about a possible NATO Article 5 collective defense scenario in Europe. In such a situation, Germany would function as key logistical and medical hub, placing substantial strain on its healthcare system. Experience from the COVID-19 pandemic suggests that health system resilience not only depends on infrastructure but also on availability and commitment of health professionals. This study examined willingness of future health professionals in Germany to contribute beyond routine duties in such a crisis and assessed preparedness, ow

COVID-19 and pandemic planning in the context of rural and remote homelessness.

Addressing the vulnerability and unique needs of homeless populations during pandemics has been a major component of the Canadian federal response to the COVID-19 crisis. Rural and remote communities, however, have received little to no funding to aid in their care of homeless people during the pandemic. Similarly, there has been little to no research on rural communities' pandemic preparedness in the context of homelessness. There are large numbers of homeless individuals in rural and remote Canada, including Indigenous peoples who are over-represented in homeless populations. Rural communiti…

Is Ghana Prepared for Another Arboviral Outbreak? Evaluating the 2024 Dengue Fever Outbreak in the Context of Past Yellow Fever, Influenza, and COVID-19 Outbreaks.

Arboviruses are a growing concern in many nations. Several reports of arboviral outbreaks have been recorded globally in the past decade alone. Repeated arboviral outbreaks in developing countries have consistently highlighted vulnerabilities in disease surveillance and response systems, exposing critical gaps in early detection, contact tracing, and resource allocation. The 2024 Dengue fever outbreak in Ghana, which recorded 205 confirmed cases out of 1410 suspected cases, underscored the urgent need to evaluate the country's preparedness for arboviral outbreaks, given the detection of compet

Survey data collection during the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany: Recommendations for an improved data collection infrastructure.

The COVID-19 pandemic created a high demand for rapid data collection while also posing major challenges to collecting timely, high-quality population survey data on public health, and health-related behavior and attitudes. In the Survey Data Collection during the COVID-19 Pandemic (SDCCP) project, we examined how data collection standards evolved during the pandemic and what challenges the national survey infrastructure in Germany was facing. Our findings revealed trade-offs between speed and data quality and a lack of preparedness for rapid data collection. Existing surveys struggled to rema

Factors associated with COVID-19 infections and mortality in Africa: a cross-sectional study using publicly available data.

INTRODUCTION: The current COVID-19 pandemic is a global threat. This elicits questions on the level of preparedness and capacity of health systems to respond to emergencies relative to other parts of the world. METHODS: This cross-sectional study uses publicly available core health data for 53 African countries to determine risk factors for cumulative COVID-19 deaths and cases per million in all countries in the continent. Descriptive statistics were determined for the indicators, and a negative binomial regression was used for modelling the risk factors. RESULTS: In sub-Saharan Africa, an i
