The eosinophilic lung is a term used to identify a heterogeneous group of parasitic diseases leading to common manifestations including alveolar or tissular pulmonary eosinophilia and, classically, radiological visible lesions of the lung. The different clinical presentations--Löffler's syndrome, larva migrans syndrome and tropical pulmonary eosinophilia are analyzed in this article and the particular features of the different causal parasites are discussed. Positive and differential diagnostic procedures in patients with pulmonary eosinophilia due to mycoses, drugs, vasculitis or an unknown c…

Bacterial cholangitis is a clinically defined syndrome caused by the regurgitation of infected bile into the circulation. The pathogenic mec … Common conditions include biliary stones and benign strictures. In many parts of the world, biliary parasites are an important factor. Biliary parasites cause necrosis, inflammation, fibrosis, strictures, and cholangiectasis of the bile ducts by several mechanisms: (1) as a direct result of the irritating chemical composition of the parasite, parasitic secr …

The liver seems to be very attractive for many parasites which may either inhabit the organ or pass through during their normal development or may be carried to the liver leading to destruction there. Malaria parasites have a short developmental stage in the hepatocytes, but they do not damage the organ. For the leishmanias (Leishmania donovani complex) are the Kupffer cells are the target cells causing visceral leishmaniasis or kala azar. Nematodes of the ascarid group have a special affinity for the liver. The larvae of the human Ascaris have to pass through the parenchyma once during their …

The authors present the actual review on several publications concerning the molecular characterizations of the viruses found in parasitic protozoa such as Giardia, Trichomonas, Leishmania and Entamoeba histolytica. All of the RNA viruses observed in parasitic protozoa showed several similarities and did not considerably differ from the viruses found in simple eukaryotic cells; they closely correspond to dsRNA viruses of yeast. The supposition that the protozoan symbionts detected in laboratories transfer to their hosts in natural conditions seemed to be rational, though, there are no evidence

It is suggested that Aspidogastrea were originally parasites of molluscs (and possibly arthropods and other invertebrates) and that they are archaic forms which have remained at a stage where vertebrates represent facultative hosts or obligatory final hosts into which only the very last stages of the life cyc …

The shistosomiasis (caused by S. japonicum) has markedly decreased in Japan, as the most of other parasitic diseases. S. japonicum inhabits the portal venous system and its egg attacks the host's immunologic defences, resulting in inflammation and fibrosis of the liver. Laparoscopy reveals the characteristic, tortoise-shell-like liver, and liver biopsy is able to make a correct diagnosis. Portal-hypaertention is one of the most popular clinical features. Multilocular echinococcosis is a less frequent disease. However, this disease has gradually increased these several years in Hokkaido. This d

The studies summarized in this paper indicate that parasitic infections can serve as a trigger factor of autoimmune reactivity by several mechanisms. The relationship between parasites and autoimmunity could be manifested by the presence of autoantibodies or T-cells with autoreactivity. In spite of the evidence that has accumulated, the specific association between infection and autoimmunity is still obscure. The reasons for tissue damage in parasitic diseases are controversial. Some believe it is the result of pathogenic autoantibodies or autoreactive T-cells. Others argue against the causati…

Parasitic diseases associated with diarrhoea are increasingly recognized as important public health problems in China. They range from well-known intestinal infections such as giardiasis, to infections better known for other symptoms - such as malignant malaria and schistosomiosis. In this review, Dr Wang Cheng-i discusses recent Chinese studies on giardiasis and amoebiasis, which have been somewhat neglected in the past, and on cryptosporidiosis and infantile hookworm infection which have only recently been recognized as a health problem in China.

Parasitic bronchitis and pneumonia is often a serious problem on individual farms, despite the fact that the disease is easy to diagnose, easy to treat, and easy to prevent by anthelminthic control programs or by vaccination. This article presents the various phases of the primary infection as well as the reinfection syndrome.
