Pathophysiology underlying irritable bowel syndrome--from the viewpoint of dysfunction of autonomic nervous system activity.

Although irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the most common gastrointestinal disease and is found in up to 50% of patients referred to gastroenterologists, its pathogenesis remains unexplained. Lately most attention has been focused on visceral hypersensitivity related to dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system. Although there have been many reports regarding the autonomic nervous system in IBS patients, the results have not always been consistent. In many studies, increased sympathetic nervous system activity and decreased parasympathetic nervous system activity have been the most frequent…

Bidirectional crosstalk between the peripheral nervous system and lymphoid tissues/organs.

The central nervous system (CNS) influences the immune system generally by regulating the systemic concentration of humoral substances (e.g., cortisol and epinephrine), whereas the peripheral nervous system (PNS) communicates specifically with the immune system according to local interactions/connections. An imbalance between the components of the PNS might contribute to pathogenesis and the further development of certain diseases. In this review, we have explored the "thread" (hardwiring) of the connections between the immune system (e.g., primary/secondary/tertiary lymphoid tissues/organs) a

Parasympathetic Dysfunction Prevails in GBA1-Associated Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: The role played by sympathetic and parasympathetic autonomic branches in patients with Parkinson's disease carrying variants in the GBA1 gene (GBA-PD) is still elusive. OBJECTIVES: To characterize cardiovascular autonomic function in GBA-PD and I-PD patients with early and mid-stage disease. METHODS: These assessments were performed: cardiovascular autonomic tests, analysis of heart rate and blood pressure variability, cardiac noradrenergic imaging. The frequency and severity of autonomic symptoms were comparatively assessed with the SCOPA-AUT questionnaire. RESULTS: Compared to

Is Heart Rate Variability Related to Season of Birth?

BACKGROUND: Season of birth (SOB) has been found to be related to cardiovascular mortality, but the mechanisms are unclear. It is suggested that birth in winter is a protective factor for the circulatory system, and this should be able to be observed using heart rate variability (HRV) measurements. The phenomenon may have a sex difference and is likely to be modulated by climatic factors. This study focused on this problem and investigates healthy school-age children to minimize confounding factors. HYPOTHESIS: Birth in winter is protective to cardiovascular system via autonomic modulation. T

Food poisoning due to methamidophos-contaminated vegetables.

BACKGROUND: Organophosphate poisoning is well known for its characteristic symptoms and signs, but food poisoning caused by pesticide-contaminated food is seldom reported. CASE REPORT: We report three incidents of food poisoning that resulted from exposure to the organophosphate insecticide methamidophos in vegetables. These outbreaks caused a cholinergic syndrome in 4 patients. The cholinergic overactivity led as to suspect organophosphate food poisoning. All patients recovered well following appropriate therapy. The clinical diagnosis of organophosphate poisoning was confirmed by reduced le

[A study on central and peripheral nerve transmitter mechanism of motion sickness].

Model of motion sickness (MS) was induced in rats by accelerating and decelerating vertical rotation for 60 min. The contents of Ach, NA, A and 5-HT and the activity of AchE in brain and blood of rats were examined after 60 min of rotation. The results showed: NA contents and AchE activity decreased significantly while A and 5-HT increased in rat's brain. Levels of Ach, NA and A in blood were increased. The results suggested that MS may be related to the imbalance of transmitters in the central nervous system resulting in the reduction of central arousal, and the imbalance between sympathetic

Does pupillary sparing oculomotor nerve palsy really spare the pupil?

We examined the pupillary cycle time (PCT) in eight elderly patients with isolated oculomotor nerve palsy (ONP) that was characterized by complete involvement of the extraocular muscles. In addition to advanced age, all patients had at least one other vasculopathic risk factor. Although in all cases the pupil was completely spared by clinical impression, the PCT was significantly prolonged compared with the other eye and well outside the normal range (mean 1590 +/- 212 msec on the involved side and 1076 +/- 110 on the uninvolved side). On re-examination, after an interval of 2-3 months, the PC

Adrenergic urticaria: a new form of stress-induced hives.

A distinctive new type of autonomic-system-dependent urticaria was seen in two patients. This "adrenergic" urticaria is to be contrasted with cholinergic urticaria. Widespread pruritic, urticarial papules developed at times of stress, each papule being surrounded by a striking white halo. Associated with these lesions was an increase in plasma noradrenaline and adrenaline concentrations. In severe attacks large plaques of urticaria appeared as well. The halo hives could be replicated with an intradermal injection of noradrenaline, but not with acetylcholine. Treatment with a beta-adrenorecepto

Vidian nerve and the eustachian tube.

The vidian nerve was stimulated electrically in the dog and this resulted in a reduced patency of the Eustachian tube. The effect was atropine resistant. This physiological evidence in the dog corresponds to anatomical evidence in man of a parasympathetic, vasodilator nerve bundle passing through the vidian to the sphenopalatine ganglion and then via the pharyngeal nerve to the Eustachian tube mucosa. Additional parasympathetic routes to the tube may exist.

Neurogenic regulation of dendritic cells in the intestine.

Antigen presenting cells like dendritic cells (DC) are responsible for the initiation of adaptive immune responses via the T helper cells they activate. The type of T cell responses DC induce is dependent on the local immunological environment where antigen has been taken up. In the gut, resident DC are phenotypically and functionally shaped by epithelial and stromal cell derived signals, the cytokine microenvironment, and neuronal products. These factors can control the activation state of DC thereby inducing tolerance for food and commensal organisms or immunity against pathogenic microbes.

Role of autonomic nervous system in the pathogenesis of angina pectoris.

The attacks of vasospastic angina or coronary spasm can be induced by injection of epinephrine, cold pressor test, Valsalva maneuver, and ex … mimetic agent, and this reaction is suppressed by atropine, a parasympathetic blocking agent. Thus, parasympathetic nervous system also seems to play a role in the production of vasospastic angina. The attacks of vasospastic angina can be easily induced by adrenergic or parasympathetic stimuli from midnight to early morning but is usually not provoked by these stimuli in the da …

Halothane is less suppressive than pentobarbital on reflex and neural activation of pancreatic F-cell.

To determine the suitability of halothane anesthesia for studies of parasympathetic control of the endocrine pancreas in dogs, we assessed the effect of halothane on reflex, direct neural, and direct chemical activation of the parasympathetic input to the islet. Levels or output of pancreatic polypeptide (PP), an islet hormone under predominant cholinergic influence, were used as an indicator of the degree of parasympathetic activation and its potential suppression by anesthesia. Reflex stimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system by 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) in dogs anesthetized with halo…

Expression of glutamic acid decarboxylase in nervous tissue structures targeted by autoantibodies in patients with diabetic autonomic neuropathy.

We have previously identified an association between symptomatic diabetic autonomic neuropathy (DAN) and autoantibodies to sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous structures. The antigens identified by these autoantibodies are not known, but glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) has been suggested as a candidate target, since anti-GAD autoantibodies are present in patients with long-term diabetes and GAD is expressed in a variety of cell types and structures in the nervous system. The aim of this study was to examine GAD expression in sympathetic ganglia and vagus nerve and to compare the distribu

Molecularly defined circuits for cardiovascular and cardiopulmonary control.

The sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems regulate the activities of internal organs1, but the molecular and functional diversity of their constituent neurons and circuits remains largely unknown. Here we use retrograde neuronal tracing, single-cell RNA sequencing, optogenetics and physiological experiments to dissect the cardiac parasympathetic control circuit in mice. We show that cardiac-innervating neurons in the brainstem nucleus ambiguus (Amb) are comprised of two molecularly, anatomically and functionally distinct subtypes. The first, which we call ambiguus cardiovascular (ACV…

Lumbar sympathetic chain: anatomical variation and clinical perspectives.

The sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems constitute the autonomic nervous system which controls the entropy of the body and maintain the equilibrium. The sympathetic chain forms a definitive anatomic entity which is quite variable with respect to its position and the number of ganglia. The sympathetic nervous system causes vasoconstriction and thus forms the basis of Lumbar sympathetic surgeries being performed in patients with peripheral vascular diseases. The anatomic variations in this region hence gains immense importance for the operating surgeons and consulting radiologists. I…

Electrophysiological study on sensory nerve activity from the submandibular salivary gland in rats.

To evaluate the role of afferent information from the salivary gland, we analyzed the neural activity of the sensory nerve innervating the submandibular gland in anesthetized rats. The sensory nerves running through the parasympathetic nerve supply responded to mechanical pressure applied to the surface of the main duct and the body of the gland, whilst those in the sympathetic nerve supply responded only to the body of the gland. The sensory nerves in the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve routes responded to pressure in the duct system produced by a retrograde injection of saline into the

Secretory responses in granular ducts and acini of submandibular glands in vivo to parasympathetic or sympathetic nerve stimulation in rats.

The roles of sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves in the secretion of saliva from submandibular glands of rats have been tested by electrical stimulation of either nerve for 1 h unilaterally in separate animals. The flows of saliva thereby induced and their protein content were monitored. Structural changes in each gland were assessed by light- and electron microscopy and compared with the unstimulated contralateral control gland, and the extent of the changes was determined morphometrically. Sympathetic nerve stimulation induced a relatively low flow of saliva that was rich in protein and w
