Breast abscess due to Salmonella paratyphi A : Case reports with review of literature.

Salmonella paratyphi A causes paratyphoid fever which is characterized by acute onset of fever, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting. Localized disease can occur following both overt and silent bacteremia followed by seeding of bacteria at distant sites. Salmonella species though associated with abscess formation in various organs, are rarely associated with breast abscess. We report 2 cases of breast abscess due to Salmonella enterica serotype paratyphi A. Appropriate sampling, surgery supplemented by a comprehensive microbiological work up aided in pathogen identification and approp…

[Current status of gastrointestinal infection in Japan--with special reference to enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli infection].

The annual incidence of gastrointestinal infections such as bacillary dysentery, typhoid fever and paratyphoid fever has declined markedly since the early 1960s. However, in parallel with the increase of international travel, the incidence of imported cases from abroad has recently tended to increase. Moreover, similar to North America and Europe, food-borne infections such as Salmonella food poisoning due to serovar Enteritidis and enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli infection has increased dramatically recently. In this paper, the current trend of gastrointestinal infections in Japan was dis…

[Evaluation of the Widal-Felix serodiagnostic test in Togo].

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of Widal-Felix serodiagnostic testing in Togo. METHOD: This study using a cohort of 200 patients recruited at hospitals in Lome and Atakpame from November 2005 to April 2006 was designed to compare the sensitivity and specificity of the routinely used technique (plate agglutination) and reference technique (tube agglutination). RESULTS: Findings showed that the prevalence of typhoid fever was 1.5% while that of paratyphoid fever was nil. The hardest-hit age group was young people between 11 to 20 years. Men were two times more likely than women to be infecte…

Case Report: Salmonella Enterica Serovar Paratyphi B Infection in a Febrile Ill Child during Enhanced Passive Surveillance in an Urban Slum in Mirpur, Dhaka.

Paratyphoid fever is one of the major causes of morbidity of febrile illnesses in endemic regions. We report a case of high-grade fever in an infant who was positive for Salmonella enterica serovar Paratyphi B (S. Paratyphi B) both in blood and stool cultures. The baby was enrolled in the passive surveillance of multicenter, multicomponent epidemiological study of enteric fever (Strategic Typhoid alliance across Africa and Asia; STRATAA) conducted in a population of 110,000 residents over 2 years in an urban slum, Dhaka, Bangladesh. This is the only patient who was positive for S. Paratyphi B …
