We report an unusual, rare case of primary epithelioid rhabdomyosarcoma of a lymph node in the parotid basin. A 72-year-old man with a history of squamous cell carcinoma of the forehead and cheek had a 5-cm mobile nontender mass of the parotid tail and right level II region. A positron emission tomography/computed tomography scan confirmed a hypermetabolic soft tissue mass in the right parotid gland. Histologic sections showed an intraparotid lymph node almost completely effaced by a centrally necrotic malignant epithelioid neoplasm consisting of uniform-appearing dyshesive cells exhibiting rh

INTRODUCTION: Mammary analog secretory carcinoma (MASC) is a new diagnosis of head and neck tumors first reported in 2010. It was often misdiagnosed as salivary acinic cell carcinoma (AciCC). We present a patient with an asymptomatic parotid tumor that underwent deep lobe parotidectomy and postoperative radiation therapy. The final pathology showed MASC.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 57-year-old male presented with an asymptomatic enlarging right parotid mass. A CT neck with IV contrast showed a 1.2 cm heterogeneously enhancing mass in the center of the right parotid gland without extraparotid extensi

BACKGROUND: Primary cutaneous mucinous carcinoma is a rare neoplasm derived from the sweat glands. It is usually located in the head and neck region, with the eyelids being the most common site of presentation. Recurrence following primary excision is common but metastasis is rare.
CASE REPORT: We report a patient presenting with rapidly progressive cutaneous mucinous carcinoma on the right parietal scalp. Systemic work-up failed to reveal an occult primary source. The tumor was treated with Mohs micrographic surgery with clear margins. However, within two months, the patient developed new le

BACKGROUND: Hemangiomas are benign neoplasms of capillary proliferation that arise from a developmental anomaly where angioblastic mesenchyme fails to form canals. Most hemangiomas arise in the head and neck region, either superficially in the skin or deeper within endocrine organs such as the parotid gland. Parathyroid hemangiomas, however, are extremely rare, with only five cases previously reported in the literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we present a case of a 68-year-old man with a hemangioma almost completely replacing the right upper parathyroid gland, grossly measuring 1.3 × 1.3

Pleomorphic salivary adenomas are the most common benign neoplasms affecting the salivary glands. Very occasionally however, metastatic lesions are identified in patients with a history of PSA, which, on detailed pathological evaluation, are found to exhibit all the histological hallmarks of the preceding benign lesions. Diagnosis of benign metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma of the salivary gland is extremely rare and still under debate. We present the first case-report in literature of multiple metachronous nasal cavity, scalp and encephalic metastases of a pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid g

Myoepitheliomas are extremely rare benign neoplasms of salivary glands. They represent 1-1.5% of all salivary gland tumors. They occur, principally, in the parotid gland and infrequently in minor salivary glands. There are distinct histological and immunohistochemical characteristics of the tumor which aid in the diagnosis. Myoepithelioma of the palate is uncommon and only a limited number of cases has been reported in the English literature. Herein, a case of plasmacytoid type of myoepithelioma of the palate in an adult female is presented along with review of the literature.

A 65-year-old man presented with a right cheek mass. His past history was significant for resection of primary oncoctyic carcinoma of the right parotid gland 5 years ago. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy of the right cheek mass was performed and demonstrated oncocytic cells without significant cytologic atypia. On the basis of the past history and comparison of the histology of previously resected specimen, the cytologic impression was consistent with recurrent oncocytic carcinoma of the salivary gland. The cytologic differential diagnosis should include other primary salivary gland neoplasms and

Parotidectomy is a widely performed procedure for various indications, including benign and malignant conditions. For malignant neoplasms of the parotid gland or metastatic disease, it may be performed in conjunction with cheek or temple skin resection, facial nerve sacrifice, or composite resection of a portion of the mandible. There are various options for reconstruction depending on the extent of resection. This article discusses various reconstructive options following parotidectomy and other ablative procedures that are often performed in conjunction. Reconstruction of parotidectomy defec

Most preauricular masses are parotid neoplasms; however, some infectious and inflammatory causes may exhibit similar presentation. Toxoplasmosis is a worldwide parasitary disease. The clinical presentation of toxoplasmosis is mostly asymptomatic and may include subfebrile fever, fatigue, and lymphadenopathy. Only 13 clinical reports of intraglandular toxoplasmic lymphadenitis have been previously reported in the English literature. A careful history and examination with appropriate investigations, including immunoglobulin G avidity assay, will frequently provide the diagnosis of intraparotid t…

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinomas are a rare form of salivary gland carcinoma. They are found predominantly in the parotid glands and rarely occur in the upper airway and in minor salivary glands. These neoplasms are found predominantly in women in the seventh and eighth decades of life and account for less than 1% of all salivary gland ductal carcinomas. These tumors may demonstrate infiltrative and destructive patterns, with a tendency to metastasize. It is recommended that they be approached and treated along the same avenues as any other malignant lesions of the head and neck.

This case illustrates that massive tumor size, ulceration, or history of multiple recurrences are not absolute prerequisites for metastatic BCC. It supports the hypothesis that tumor proximity to major lymphatic systems or large-caliber blood vessels may be of significance. BCCs originating in skin overlying the parotid gland have the potential to penetrate to a rich vascular and lymphatic plexus as well as compromise the integrity of the facial nerve. Early treatment of these neoplasms utilizing accurate methods of microscopic control appears warranted to prevent the serious consequences of r

BACKGROUND: Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is the most common malignant tumor of the parotid gland. High-grade MEC has a high degree of malignancy, strong invasiveness, lacks obvious clinical and imaging features, and is prone to misdiagnosis. Moreover, the literature on the ultrasonic characteristics of MEC is limited. This article retrospectively analyzes the multimodal ultrasound features of a case of MEC.

PURPOSE: To describe a rare presentation of a case of intraocular non-teratoid medulloepithelioma with teratoid metastases in ipsilateral intraparotid lymph nodes.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 9-year-old male child with previous history of ciliary body non-teratoid medulloepithelioma presented with a swelling in the right pre-auricular region for 1 month. Magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography-computed tomography showed a right intraparotid mass with enlarged ipsilateral cervical lymph nodes. A core biopsy was taken from the lesion, which on microscopy showed a tumor composed of s

Ewing sarcoma (ES) usually arises from long bones and affects the head and neck region in only 1%-4% of cases. We reported clinical, radiographic, cytomorphologic, and histomorphologic findings of the ES in the mandible, because of its rarity and radiologically misinterpreted as a parotid gland tumor. A 26-year-old male patient presented with a history of painfull cheek swelling. On magnetic resonance imaging, a mass measuring 50 × 48 × 45 mm was found eroding mandible and pushing back the parotid gland. Aspiration cytology was performed with suspicion of parotid gland tumor. Small, nucleated

Cutaneous adnexal differentiation is well-recognized in benign mixed tumors occurring in cutaneous sites. The incidence of this histologic finding in salivary gland sites is not known. We sought to describe the incidence of cutaneous adnexal differentiation in benign mixed tumors of the palate, lip, and parotid gland. Benign mixed tumors of the palate (n=30), lip (n=13), and parotid gland (n=37) resected between 1980 and 2009 at a single academic medical institution were reviewed. All hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections containing neoplasm were reviewed by all authors including one dermatop

RATIONALE: Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the parotid gland, being the most prevalent malignant neoplasm among salivary gland tumors, represents the leading incidence rate among primary parotid malignancies. This pathological entity predominantly affects young and middle-aged females, typically presenting as a painless parotid mass. Due to its variable disease progression and nonspecific clinical manifestations, preoperative misdiagnosis as a benign tumor is frequently encountered. However, when parotid mucoepidermoid carcinoma progresses to involve the jugular foramen region, a complex anatomica

BACKGROUND: Lipomas are common benign soft tissue neoplasms but they are found very rarely in the deep lobe of parotid gland. Surgical intervention in these tumors is challenging because of the proximity of the facial nerve, and thus knowledge of the anatomy and meticulous surgical technique are essential.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 71-year-old female presented with a large asymptomatic mass, which had occupied the left facial area for over the past fifteen years, and she requested surgical excision for a cosmetically better facial appearance. The computed tomography (CT) scan showed a well-defined

SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: Facial nerve schwannoma is extremely uncommon. Despite its rarity, it is considered the most common facial nerve tumor and potentially affects any segment of the nerve. Presenting symptoms vary depending on the location of the neoplasm. Tumors pertaining to the extratemporal course of the nerve mainly appear as an asymptomatic parotid mass. We present a rare case of schwannoma of the zygomatic branch of the right facial nerve that was surgically resected, without facial nerve injury.
