BACKGROUND: Equine parvovirus-hepatitis (EqPV-H) has been proposed as the aetiological cause of Theiler's disease, also known as serum hepatitis. EqPV-H-associated Theiler's disease has not been previously reported in Europe.
OBJECTIVES: To determine whether EqPV-H infection was associated with a 2018-2019 outbreak of Theiler's disease in four horses on a studfarm.
STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive case series.
METHODS: The medical records of four horses from the same farm diagnosed with fatal Theiler's disease were examined retrospectively. Information collected included a clinical history, physic…

Acute parvovirus B19 infection is a self-limiting disease in patients with normal immune response. However, in patients with blood dyscrasias, it is possible to present with an aplastic crisis. We present the case of a 48-year-old man who had developed an aplastic crisis as a result of an acute parvovirus B19 infection with an undiagnosed hereditary spherocytosis. Suspicions of the parvovirus infection began to arise after a routine bone marrow histopathological analysis which showed erythroblastic hyperplasia with giant erythroid precursor and viral inclusions. A subsequent immunohistochemica…

Parvovirus B19 (B19V) DNA persists lifelong in human tissues, but the cell type harbouring it remains unclear. We here explore B19V DNA distribution in B, T and monocyte cell lineages of recently excised tonsillar tissues from 77 individuals with an age range of 2-69 years. We show that B19V DNA is most frequent and abundant among B cells, and within them we find a B19V genotype that vanished from circulation >40 years ago. Since re-infection or re-activation are unlikely with this virus type, this finding supports the maintenance of pathogen-specific humoral immune responses as a consequence …

We report a case of fetal cerebellar hemorrhage and hypoplasia, identified by fetal MRI after intrauterine blood transfusion at 21 weeks' gestation for treatment of severe anemia due to congenital Parvovirus infection. Postnatal MRI confirmed atrophy of bilateral cerebellar hemispheres and inferior vermis. Cerebellar capillaries may be extremely susceptible to hemodynamic changes in the setting of intrauterine blood transfusion due to severe anemia. Although the correlation between fetal intracranial anomalies and Parvovirus infection remains unclear, in this population, a detailed evaluation …

We describe 2 cases of 6-year-old twin girls presenting with acute carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) associated with human parvovirus B19 (HPV-B19) infection, as evidenced by serological data and detection of HPV-B19 DNA in blood with use of polymerase chain reaction (PCR). To our knowledge, this is the first time that HPV-B19 infection has been suggested as the causal agent of simultaneous acute bilateral CTS in twins, thus presenting the possibility that similar immunologic responses can be observed in twins during viral infections.

BACKGROUND: Infection with parvovirus B19 may cause fetal losses including spontaneous abortion, intrauterine fetal death and non-immune hydrops fetalis. The aim of this study is to determine the frequency of parvovirus B19 in formalin fixed placental tissues in lost fetuses using real-time PCR method.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 100 formalin fixed placental tissues with unknown cause of fetal death were determined using real-time PCR method after DNA extraction.
RESULTS: Six out of 100 cases (6%) were positive for parvovirus B19 using real-time PCR. Gestational age of all positi…

A novel conception of CD4(+) T cells with cytolytic potential (CD4(+) CTL) is emerging. These cells appear to have a part in controlling malignancies and chronic infections. Human parvovirus B19 can cause a persistent infection, yet no data exist on the presence of B19-specific CD4(+) CTLs. Such cells could have a role in the pathogenesis of some autoimmune disorders reported to be associated with B19. We explored the cytolytic potential of human parvovirus B19-specific T cells by stimulating peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) with recombinant B19-VP2 virus-like particles. The cytolytic …

Human tumors develop multiple strategies to evade recognition and efficient suppression by the immune system. Therefore, a variety of immuno … n the recognition of newly released tumor antigens. This is in particular the case of the oncolytic parvovirus H-1 (H-1PV), which is able to kill human tumor cells and stimulate an anti-tumor immune response through increased presentation of tumor-associated antigens, maturation of dendritic cells, and release of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Current research …

Having a tropism for erythroid progenitor cells, parvovirus B19 may cause partial red cell aplasia and thrombocytopenia. Early diagnosis of parvovirus B19 infection in immunocompromised patients is needed for timely antiviral therapy. A high-risk group for parvovirus B19 infection includes patients with blood diseases who receive multiple transfusions of blood components; those who have undergone donor organ transplantation and are long taking immunosuppressive drugs; and pregnant women. These patients require careful virological monitoring for major blood-borne viral infections. This paper de…

We report on an eight-year-old girl with acute pericarditis and transient erythroblastopenia associated with human parvovirus B19 (PVB19) infection. The patient presented with complaints of fever, chest pain, fatigue, and shortness of breath. On physical examination, she had tachycardia, hepatomegaly, and muffled heart sounds. Teleradiography exhibited cardiomegaly and echocardiography showed a pericardial effusion of 25 mm. Serum anti-PVB19 IgM and PVB19 DNA were positive. The patient developed anemia and reticulocytopenia in the second week, both of which persisted for two weeks then resolve…

INTRODUCTION: Primary parvovirus B19 infection may present a wide variety of dermatological features. We report two cases of parvovirus infection presenting as flexural erythema of baboon syndrome induced by various drugs, but associated with purpuric or oedematous features.
CASE REPORTS: A pregnant 23-year-old woman at 39 weeks of amenorrhoea and a 49-year-old woman consulted for flexural eruption in a setting of fever. In both cases, clinical examination revealed erythematosus rash in the major skin folds, with vesicles and elements of purpura in the former patient and bullous oedema in the…

We report a 9-year-old girl with acute autonomic sensory and motor neuropathy (AASM) associated with human parvovirus B19 (HPV-B19) infection. The patient presented with fever, erythema of the entire body, and abdominal pain with vomiting. The titer of HPV-B19 IgM antibody was significantly elevated. Symptoms such as muscle weakness, severe hyperesthesia, dyshidrosis, and neurogenic bladder associated with autonomic disturbance developed over several days. Intravenous immunoglobulin therapy gave no obvious improvement of her symptoms. Motor and sensory impairment improved slowly without medica…

We describe a 23-year-old patient who presented acutely with haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HL) and Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome (MRS). MRS and HL are two unusual and complex clinical patterns that may present acutely and to our knowledge, an association between them has never been reported. The clinical investigations in this patient led to identification of parvovirus B19 (PB19) viraemia by PCR. Parvovirus infection has been reported as a cause of virus-associated HL, but the presence of PB19 has never been sought or reported as a possible trigger for MRS. This observation suggests a …

Parvovirus B19 induced acute hepatitis and hepatic failure have been previously reported, mainly in children. Very few cases of parvovirus induced hepatic failure have been reported in adults and fewer still have required liver transplantation. We report the case of a 55-year-old immunocompetent woman who developed fulminant hepatic failure after acute infection with Parvovirus B19 who subsequently underwent orthotopic liver transplantation. This is believed to be the first reported case in the literature in which an adult patient with fulminant hepatic failure associated with acute parvovirus…

OBJECTIVES: To assess the possibility to correct for fetal anemia using an intracardiac approach in twin pregnancies affected by fetal Parvovirus B19 infection.
METHODS: A monochorionic twin pregnancy affected by fetal Parvovirus B19 infection and hydrops was treated using an intraabdominal approach and by intracardiac transfusions. Access to the umbilical cord was not possible.
RESULTS: In one fetus, hydrops resolved after intraabdominal transfusions, in the other however, hydrops was progressive. After intracardiac transfusions, both fetuses normalized.
CONCLUSIONS: In multiple gestation …

Here we report two cases of first-trimester parvovirus B19 (PV-B19) infection that were successfully treated by intrauterine blood transfusion into the umbilical vein. At 13 weeks' gestation both fetuses presented with increased nuchal translucency (NT) and cardiomegaly. In both cases pulsed Doppler ultrasound examination of the fetal middle cerebral artery (MCA) revealed increased peak systolic velocity (PSV), which led to a suspicion of fetal anemia. Maternal PV infection was confirmed by a positive polymerase chain reaction result. Each fetus received a 3-mL intravenous transfusion of packe…
