Hearing, Speech, Language, and Communicative Participation in Patients With Apert Syndrome: Analysis of Correlation With Fibroblast Growth Factor Receptor 2 Mutation.

UNLABELLED: Apert syndrome (AS) is caused by the heterozygous presence of 1 of 2 specific missense mutations of the fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 (FGFR2) gene. The 2 adjacent substitutions, designated p.Ser252Trp (S252W) and p.Pro253Arg (P253R), account for more than 98% of cases. Previous research has identified elevated hearing difficulties and incidence of cleft palate in this population. However, the influence of FGFR2 genotype on the speech, language, and communicative participation of children with AS has yet to be examined. METHODS: A retrospective case note analysis was complete

Participation in a Chronic Limb Threatening Ischemia Randomized Trial Is Inversely Correlated With Regional Amputation Rate in Limb Threatening Ischemia Patients.

OBJECTIVE: The National Health Service demonstrated that regions of the United Kingdom with the highest number of patients enrolled in research studies had the lowest risk-adjusted mortality when patients were admitted to the hospital. Our goal was to investigate if this correlation was evident for patients with chronic limb threatening ischemia (CLI) treated in the United States (US). Accordingly, we examined correlations among sites participating in the Best Endovascular versus best Surgical Therapy in patients with Critical (BEST-CLI) trial, a multicenter, National Institute of Health-spons

Factors influencing participation in educational workshops as part of a pulmonary rehabilitation program in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) (primarily composed of an exercise training program (ET) and educational workshops) is an effective intervention for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Although factors which influence participation in the full PR program have been reported, specific data on the educational component of PR have not been published. We aimed to identify factors which predict refusal to participate in the educational component of PR. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: 201 patient charts were retrospectively included in the analysis. Patients were classified a

Association between Big Five Personality Traits and Participation in Cardiac Rehabilitation in Japanese Patients with Cardiovascular Disease: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) remains underutilised, despite its established clinical benefit. A personality traits assessment may help promote CR implementation, as they are determinants of health-related behaviour. This study aimed to examine the association between the Big Five personality traits and outpatient CR participation in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) after discharge. This retrospective cohort study included 163 patients aged <80 years, who underwent inpatient CR when hospitalised for CVD. The Big Five personality traits (conscientiousness, neuroticism, openness, extrave

How Much Information and Participation Do Patients with Inflammatory Rheumatic Diseases Prefer in Interaction with Physicians? Results of a Participatory Research Project.

OBJECTIVE: Patient preferences for information and participation in medical decision-making are important prerequisites to realize a shared decision between patients and physicians. This paper aims at exploring these preferences in German patients with inflammatory rheumatic diseases and at identifying relevant determinants of these preferences. METHODS: In a cross-sectional survey, adult patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), spondyloarthritis (SA) or different connective tissue diseases (CTS) filled out a questionnaire. Data were collected via a written questionnaire (1) sent to members o

Reasons for not participating in scleroderma patient support groups: a comparison of results from the North American and European scleroderma support group surveys.

PURPOSE: Many people with scleroderma rely on peer-led support groups as a coping resource. Reasons for not attending support groups in scleroderma have been investigated only in North American participants. This study assesses reasons for nonattendance in European countries and compares results with previously published North American findings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The same 21-item survey as used in the North American sample assessed possible reasons for not attending scleroderma support groups. Proportions of items rated Important or Very Important were compared between samples. RESULTS:

Emergency Nurses' Perceived Confidence in Participating in the Discharge Process of Congestive Heart Failure Patients From the Emergency Department: A Quantitative Study.

INTRODUCTION: Adults with exacerbated heart failure (HF) who present to the emergency department (ED) generally are readmitted. However, Hispanic HF patients are more likely to be admitted than Whites. Studies show the importance of nurse-led interventions in the ED discharge process, but registered nurse (RN) confidence in performing discharge tasks has not been assessed. Greater nurse confidence leads to improved task performance, and potentially reduced HF readmission, lowering cost of care. This study aimed to gain insight into ED RNs' perceived self-confidence in discharge tasks with stab

Cardiac rehabilitation in patients who underwent primary percutaneous coronary intervention for acute myocardial infarction: determinants of programme participation and completion.

BACKGROUND: Hospital length of stay after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) treated with primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI) has reduced, resulting in more limited patient education during admission. Therefore, systematic participation in cardiac rehabilitation (CR) has become more essential. We aimed to identify patient-related factors that are associated with participation in and completion of a CR programme. METHODS: We identified 3,871 consecutive AMI patients who underwent pPCI between 2003 and 2011. These patients were linked to the database of Capri CR, which provides ded

Patients with gout have short telomeres compared with healthy participants: association of telomere length with flare frequency and cardiovascular disease in gout.

AIM AND BACKGROUND: Chronic inflammation associates with increased senescence, which is a strong predictor for cardiovascular disease. We hypothesised that inflammation accelerates senescence and thereby enhances the risk of cardiovascular disease in gout. METHODS: We assessed replicative senescence by quantifying telomere length (TL) in a discovery cohort of 145 Dutch patients with gout and 273 healthy individuals and validated our results in 474 patients with gout and 293 healthy participants from New Zealand. Subsequently, we investigated the effect of cardiovascular disease on TL of all p

It is not just a Minor Thing - A Phenomenological-Hermeneutic Study of Patients' Experiences when afflicted by a Minor Heart Attack and Participating in Cardiac Rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: To improve cardiac care, especially cardiac rehabilitation, patients' perspectives should be better addressed. In Denmark, patients afflicted by a minor heart attack in terms of unstable angina pectoris or non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction are treated in fast-track programmes with subacute treatment in hospital, early discharge and follow-up specialised outpatient cardiac rehabilitation. Knowledge of these patients' experiences of their life situation is essential to develop sufficient care protocols. AIM: To gain in-depth understanding of how patients afflicted by a minor he

Implications of new European Union driving regulations on patients with Type 1 diabetes who participated in the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial.

AIMS: Recurrent severe hypoglycaemia in a patient with diabetes is strongly associated with a crash risk while driving. To help ensure road safety, recent changes were made to European Union driving regulations for patients with diabetes. These included the recommendation that more than one episode of severe hypoglycaemia within 12 months would lead to the loss of a driving licence. This study has assessed the impact of this regulation if applied to patients who participated in the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial. METHODS: All patients in the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial
