BACKGROUND: The incidence of emergence agitation (EA) after sevoflurane anesthesia is high, especially in pediatric strabismus surgery. Howe … re divided into 2 groups; upon arrival at the postanesthetic care unit (PACU), patients who had EA (pediatric anesthesia emergence delirium [PAED] scale score ≥14) were treated with 1.0 mg/kg 1% propofol (group P: n = 30). Patients who did not have EA (PAED scale score <14, group C: n = 83) were taken care of in the PACU without propofol administration.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative respiratory adverse events are the most common perioperative complications in pediatric anesthesia, particularly prevalent in children undergoing tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy, with an incidence rate as high as 50%. The choice of anesthetic induction regimen directly influences the incidence of respiratory adverse events during the induction period. However, this effect seems to have minimal impact on postoperative outcomes. The occurrence rate of postoperative respiratory adverse events is likely more closely associated with the anesthetic maintenance phase, yet th…

BACKGROUND: Local anesthetic injections may induce pain in children, leading to fear and anxiety during subsequent visits. Among the various approaches recommended to reduce pain, one is the use of a Buzzy Bee™ device that operates on the concept of gate control theory and distraction. The literature regarding its effectiveness during the deposition of local anesthesia remains limited; hence, the aim of the present study was to determine the efficacy of extraoral cold and vibrating devices in reducing pain perception during the deposition of local anesthesia.
METHODS: A split-mouth crossover

Dexmedetomidine is increasingly used in paediatric anaesthesia practice. In this issue of the British Journal of Anaesthesia, a retrospective hospital registry study in anaesthetised children showed that intraoperative use of dexmedetomidine was dose-dependently associated with a longer postanaesthesia care unit length of stay. Dexmedetomidine administration was also associated with higher total hospital costs and higher odds of unwarranted haemodynamic effects, while the onset of emergence delirium was not reduced. Although these results could curb enthusiasm for paediatric use of dexmedetomi

BACKGROUND: Melnick-Needles syndrome (MNS) is a rare X-linked genetic disorder caused by mutations in the FLNA gene, characterized by distinctive craniofacial and skeletal dysmorphisms, hearing loss, and urological anomalies. The associated upper airway abnormalities, including retrognathia and tracheomalacia, present a high-risk scenario for general anesthesia. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of an 8-year-old girl with genetically confirmed MNS scheduled for urgent transurethral stenting due to obstructive hydronephrosis and recurrent sepsis. Her clinical features included severe retrog

BACKGROUND: Genetic mitochondrial diseases (GMDs) are a large group of genetically and clinically heterogeneous disorders caused by defects in genes encoding mitochondrial components. GMDs are grouped into named syndromes based on clinical presentation, for example, Leigh syndrome (LS). Surgical interventions are often required in GMDs, necessitating the use of general anesthesia (GA). Some GMD animal models show both a marked reduction in anesthetic concentrations necessary for sedation and toxic sequelae resulting from anesthetic exposures. Hypersensitivity to sedation by anesthetic agents,

Pediatric interventional radiology procedures often use general anesthesia to manage pain and anxiety, but general anesthesia carries risks. Medical hypnosis, a noninvasive technique, has shown potential, though its application in pediatric interventional radiology is underexplored. This pilot study compared medical hypnosis and general anesthesia in pediatric interventional radiology, focusing on pre- and post-procedural anxiety and overall patient experience. The mean age of the medical hypnosis group was higher than the general anesthesia group. Post-procedural anxiety was significantly low

Intraoperative electroencephalography (EEG) monitoring under pediatric anesthesia has begun to attract increasing interest, driven by the availability of pediatric-specific EEG monitors and the realization that traditional dosing methods based on patient movement or changes in hemodynamic response often lead to imprecise dosing, especially in younger infants who may experience adverse events (e.g., hypotension) due to excess anesthesia. EEG directly measures the effects of anesthetics on the brain, which is the target end-organ responsible for inducing loss of consciousness. Over the past ten …

BACKGROUND: Effective and well-tolerated sedation is critical for managing anxiety and uncooperative behaviors in pediatric dental patients. The intranasal and sublingual routes offer needle-free alternatives to oral or intravenous sedation; however, their comparative performance in dental settings remains underexplored.
OBJECTIVE: To systematically compare the efficacy, onset time, and child cooperation outcomes of intranasal and sublingual sedative agents in pediatric dental patients.
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. The databases searched in
