Eliciting the views of autistic adolescents attending specialist schools on what friendships mean to them.

Friendship has been identified as an important way to support autistic adolescents' social, emotional and cognitive development. However, research examining autistic adolescents' friendships has tended to use methodologies inaccessible to children with complex communication and learning needs. We examined the friendship experiences of 12 autistic adolescents (aged 12-15 years) with complex communication and learning needs who attended a specialist school. Using reflexive thematic analysis, we identified two themes. Within the first theme of 'reconceptualising friendship', the adolescents ident

Is peer adversity in childhood and adolescence linked to interpersonal functioning in adulthood? A meta-analytic review.

This meta-analysis synthesizes research on longitudinal associations between child and adolescent peer adversity and various domains of adult interpersonal functioning. Meta-analyses were conducted on 240 effect sizes from 39 studies published between 1998 and 2024, unadjusted and adjusted for gender, socioeconomic status, and childhood family adversity. Participants (Ntotal = 51,139, proportion of girls = 54.3%, average duration to follow-up = 11.6 years) come from 28 samples that were primarily based in Europe or North America. Peer adversity was linked to adult interpersonal functioning in

Associations between alcohol-related parenting factors and youth alcohol expectancies: considering the role of perceived friends' disapproval of alcohol use.

We investigated variations in associations of alcohol-related parenting factors with alcohol expectancies by perceived friends' disapproval of alcohol use in middle-school-aged youth (n = 7657). Perceived friend disapproval moderated the association of deciding on rules about drinking with positive expectancies. Parenting factors and friend disapproval were independently associated with negative expectancies.

Towards a standardized competency-profile for peer-to-peer-teachers in medical education - a systematic mapping review.

BACKGROUND: Medical education research acknowledges "P2P-teaching" as an effective, scalable, and cost-effective possibility for educating students in human medicine. At the same time, the medical field is yet to form an empirically founded and overarching description of necessary P2P-teaching competencies across medical subjects. In order to create an overarching picture of relevant student P2P-teaching competencies in medical education, this article raises the question, "What are the relevant teaching competencies in qualification measures for P2P-teachers in medical education?". METHOD: We

Risk Factors for Non-Suicidal Self-Injury in Adolescents: Evidence from a Meta-Analysis of 18 Longitudinal Studies.

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a significant risk factor for subsequent suicidal ideation, suicidal behavior, and psychological disorders. This meta-analysis of published prospective studies has examined the longitudinal predictors of NSSI drawing on 18 published reports and 23,737 independent participants. The random effects model showed that the overall prediction of NSSI was significant (OR = 1.18, 95%CI[1.08-1.28]). These factors, which include depressive symptoms (OR = 1.21, 95%CI[1.10-1.33]), prior history of NSSI (OR = 2.34, 95%CI[1.66,3.29]), being female (OR = 1.59, 95%CI[1.01,2.5

[Survey on peer support programs for family members and other caregivers of people with dementia in Japan].

OBJECTIVE: Peer support, including family associations and dementia cafés, helps reduce the psychological burden on patients with dementia and their caregivers. By considering various aspects of peer support, this study aimed to determine its psychological impact on caregivers, efficacy, and related challenges. METHOD: In June 2023, we conducted a web-based questionnaire survey of caregivers of people with dementia. RESULTS: Among 3,318 respondents, 29.3% were aware of peer support, but only 14.0% participated. The important determinants of participation were low time-related and psychologic

A person-centered and genetically informed approach toward characterizing multidomain resilience to neighborhood disadvantage in youth.

BACKGROUND: Examining resilience to adversity across multiple behavioral domains (e.g., psychological well-being, social functioning) can better characterize positive development and inform novel prevention and intervention efforts. However, few studies have employed person-centered methods to examine individual profiles of resilience across multiple domains in youth. Further, research exploring contextual predictors of resilience has rarely used genetically informed designs, which are critical for eliminating potential confounds. METHODS: The current study employed latent profile analysis (L

Peer Effects, Warning Messages, and Gambling Behavior: Evidence from a Lab-in-the-field Experiment.

The rapid rate of technological advancement has led to a proliferation of online gambling applications in Africa. This has resulted in an unprecedented rise in problem gambling across sub-Saharan Africa. In addition, the rapid growth of the gambling industry has outpaced laws and regulations aimed at consumer protection, limiting the scope of problem gambling interventions. Using a sample of 905 gamblers from Kenya, this study investigated the impact of peer effects and warning messages on gambling behavior using a lab-in-the-field randomized controlled trial. This study found no evidence that

Peer-assisted HIV partner notification services to strengthen index partner testing for newly diagnosed men who have sex with men in coastal Kenya.

BACKGROUND: HIV partner notification services (PNS) have been proven safe and effective in finding undiagnosed HIV infections among general populations in settings with high HIV incidence, but have not been regularly implemented among men who have sex with men in sub-Saharan Africa. This study aimed to describe experiences with PNS in a cohort of newly diagnosed MSM in coastal Kenya, assess facilitators and barriers to participating in PNS, and explore which PNS strategies were preferred for different types of sexual partners. METHODS: The mixed-method study was conducted between January and

Peer support for borderline personality disorder: A critical review of its feasibility, acceptability, and alignment with concepts of recovery.

Many organizations have adopted peer support to increase service alignment with recovery-oriented principles. Yet, few studies have scrutinized borderline personality disorder (BPD)-specific concepts of "recovery" and "recovery-oriented practice," nor evaluated the extent to which existing peer support services (PSS) align with these concepts. We addressed these knowledge gaps in four phases: (a) a literature review to understand BPD-specific concepts of "recovery" and "recovery-oriented practice," (b) a literature review and open web search to describe the implementation, feasibility, or effe

Tutors' perspective on the impact of their anatomy tutoring experience and ethics of body donation.

PURPOSE: To explore the future of former anatomy tutors, their perception of the impact that the anatomy near-peer teaching (NPT) program have had on them, in terms of academic performance, professional development, personal growth, long-term anatomical knowledge, and views on body donor ethics. Additionally, we compared their academic performance with non-tutor peers in terms of ranking at the National Qualifying Examination (NQE). METHODS: A voluntary survey was emailed to all anatomy tutors from 2005 to 2024, using an online Google Forms questionnaire including closed and open-ended questi

Recovery Coach Program Implementation Across an Integrated Health System.

Peer recovery coaches (PRCs) are increasingly playing a role in helping patients with substance use disorders engage with treatment. PRCs can support and motivate patients in meeting their self-defined recovery goals, engaging in addiction treatment, navigating the health care system, and overcoming barriers to recovery. This support increases patient engagement and is cost-effective. Little has been written about integrating PRCs in health care settings. In this column, the authors describe the implementation of a PRC program with 23 coaches serving 5,662 participants in diverse clinical sett

Real-World Social Reward Processes are Linked to Momentary Positive Affect in Adolescent Girls.

Positive peer interactions are critical for adolescent development and well-being. Showing little interest in interacting socially with peers and/or extracting little reward from positive peer interactions can be markers of social anhedonia, which impacts many youths, especially girls, with social anxiety and depressive disorders. Reduced interest or reward in peer interactions may contribute to social anxiety and depression in girls through effects on positive affect (PA), though associations between social anhedonia and momentary PA have yet to be tested. The present study used ecological mo

Children's attitudes about transgender identity disclosure and concealment.

Supportive peers are crucial for transgender children's well-being. Transgender children who live in their affirmed gender face decisions surrounding concealment and disclosure of their transgender identity. We sought to understand how cisgender (N = 115) and gender-diverse children (N = 127), and siblings of gender-diverse children (N = 63) think about transition disclosure and concealment. All groups viewed transition disclosure and concealment positively. However, gender-diverse children showed greater acceptance of transition concealment and had stronger liking of transition concealers (re

The last pink straw: Children's and parents' judgements about gender nonconformity.

Gender nonconforming (GNC) boys often elicit negative reactions from peers and adults. However, it is unclear which aspects of nonconformity evoke negative social consequences. Are appearance characteristics, activity interests, or traits most impactful for peers' evaluations? Sixty-seven 6- to 11-year-old children and their parents interacted with a magnetic paper doll of a GNC boy who was displayed with feminine appearance characteristics, activity interests, and traits. Participants were allowed to physically remove feminine attributes and/or add masculine and neutral attributes to help the

Peer-Delivered Interventions for Caregivers in the ICU with a Focus on Severe Acute Brain Injury: A Scoping Review.

Approximately 50% of family caregivers of patients with severe acute brain injury (SABI) admitted to intensive care units experience clinically significant anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress. Peer-delivered interventions may be a sustainable way to provide social connection, emotional support, and evidence-based coping skills for family caregivers of patients with SABI to improve their mental health and well-being. The aim of this scoping review was to examine existing peer-delivered interventions for family caregivers of adult patients with SABI admitted to neurocritical and other

Context and domain matter: the error-related negativity in peer presence predicts fear of negative evaluation, not global social anxiety, in adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety symptoms are most likely to emerge during adolescence, a developmental window marked by heightened concern over peer evaluation. However, the neurocognitive mechanism(s) underlying adolescent social anxiety remain unclear. Emerging work points to the error-related negativity (ERN) as a potential neural marker of exaggerated self/error-monitoring in social anxiety, particularly for errors committed in front of peers. However, social anxiety symptoms are marked by heterogeneity and it remains unclear exactly what domain(s) of social anxiety symptoms are associated with

Experiences of peer work in drug use service settings: A systematic review of qualitative evidence.

BACKGROUND: People with lived or living experiences of drug use and services have been increasingly incorporated into nonpeer-led mainstream organizational settings as a unique workforce. Despite the much discussed effectiveness of peer services in achieving measurable outcomes, limited attention has been given to the experiential aspects of peer work from the perspectives of peers, clients, or others involved. This systematic review synthesized qualitative evidence examining the experiences of peer work in nonpeer-led drug use service settings. It focused on the benefits of incorporating peer

Sexual Victimization in Adolescence: Pathways of Risk from Sexual Harassment via Risky Alcohol Use and Delinquency Among U.S. Adolescents.

Sexual harassment is a common, yet understudied form of peer victimization experienced by adolescents during a critical period in the development of sexual identity. Adverse sexual experiences early in life (e.g., child sexual abuse) can increase risk of future sexual assault victimization; however, it is unclear as to whether sexual harassment victimization is also a risk factor for sexual assault. We examined the prospective association between peer sexual harassment and experiencing sexual victimization in the following year among a community sample of 13-15-year-old adolescents (N = 800, 5
