BACKGROUND: Social anxiety manifests as a fear of social situations, including being observed by others (Bruce & Saeed 1999). Communication skills workshops frequently involve student performance being observed by others, therefore social anxiety may impact upon attitudes to this style of teaching.
AIMS: To determine the levels of social anxiety amongst medical undergraduates and investigate whether this influenced attitudes towards communication skills teaching.
METHODS: 247 medical students (three year groups, 60% female) from the University of St Andrews completed a questionnaire survey m

Most of the available evidence on neuropsychological functioning in anxiety disorders is based on clinical samples, investigating persons affected by obsessive-compulsive disorder. Knowledge is sparse regarding cognitive functions in other types of anxiety disorders. The aim of this study was to examine whether persons diagnosed with an anxiety disorder show neuropsychological impairments relative to healthy controls in tasks tapping episodic memory, verbal fluency, psychomotor speed, and executive functioning. Population-based samples comprising individuals affected by panic disorder with and

The essential feature of social anxiety disorder (social phobia) is a fear of scrutiny by other people in social or performance situations. The level of anxiety experienced by the person with social anxiety disorder is excessive, and results in substantial impairment in the sufferer's social, family, and professional life. Three distinct subtypes of the disorder have been identified: generalized social anxiety disorder, in which the individual fears a multitude of social situations; nongeneralized social anxiety disorder, in which only 2 or 3 situations are feared; and public-speaking phobia.

PURPOSE: Although several studies have examined cognitive and psychological functioning in long COVID, few have included appropriate comparison groups and utilized both subjective and objective measures. First, this study compared objective cognitive performance and self-reported cognitive and psychological symptoms across individuals with long COVID, those recovered without persistent symptoms, and a Control Group with no history of COVID-19 infection. Second, the relationship between sociodemographic and disease characteristics and cognitive and psychological outcomes was explored in the Lon

The error-related negativity (ERN), a neural response to errors, has been associated with several forms of psychopathology and assumed to represent a neural risk marker for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and anxiety disorders. Yet, it is still unknown which specific symptoms or traits best explain ERN variation. This study investigated performance-monitoring in participants (N = 100) recruited across a spectrum of obsessive-compulsive characteristics (n = 26 patients with OCD; n = 74 healthy participants including n = 24 with low, n = 24 with medium, and n = 26 with high OC-characteristic

Mental health disorders, such as depression and anxiety, are increasing, and thus, there is a necessity for accurate and effective detection. K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) and extensions have been extensively used in disease detection. In this work, Adaptive Sigma KNN (ASKNN) is proposed, an improved version of KNN that adapts neighbor influence dynamically with an adaptive sigma parameter, enhancing predictive accuracy and stability in mental health classification. ASKNN is tested on our dataset and various public mental health and benchmark medical datasets. Performance has been measured through

The MindGym, a novel immersive technology utilizing a reflective chamber environment, was developed to create standardized experiential content, including anxiolytic experiences. This study examined whether therapeutic experiences originally created in the MindGym could maintain their efficacy when delivered via 360-degree recordings through virtual reality (VR) headsets. A randomized controlled trial (N=126) compared anxiety reduction, cognitive performance, and physiological responses across four conditions: MindGym and VR platforms, each delivering either breathwork or rain stimuli. Results

BACKGROUND: Investigating the mechanisms of future anxiety requires a sample exposed to both high career uncertainty and intense performance pressures. Sport sciences students represent a uniquely suited and critical population for this purpose, as their educational context simultaneously demands rigorous physical performance, highly competitive labor conditions, and the management of career-related ambiguities. Therefore, this study focuses on this specific sample to explore how future anxiety is associated with psychological wellbeing and whether mental toughness may serve as a protective me

Current theoretical approaches suggest that mathematical anxiety (MA) manifests itself as a weakness in quantity manipulations. This study is the first to examine automatic versus intentional processing of numerical information using the numerical Stroop paradigm in participants with high MA. To manipulate anxiety levels, we combined the numerical Stroop task with an affective priming paradigm. We took a group of college students with high MA and compared their performance to a group of participants with low MA. Under low anxiety conditions (neutral priming), participants with high MA showed r

BACKGROUND: The few studies of children's academic performance in developing countries have largely focused on effects of early risks and cognitive ability and usually neglected other factors such as attention and anxiety. Previously, we reported that scores on the Learning Behaviour Scale (LBS) and the Revised Behaviour Problem Checklist (RBPC) were correlated with academic scores and achievement test scores for village children in St Vincent, the West Indies.
AIMS: We examined the stability of LBS and RBPC scores and their ability to predict academic and achievement scores in the same popul

BACKGROUND: Mental health significantly impacts athletes' daily functioning and performance. Some coping techniques, such as substance abuse, can lead to addictive behaviors detrimental to sport participation.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify the prevalence of anxiety, depression, and substance use in varsity student-athletes, examine their associations, and determine if academic and athletic factors (e.g., competition level, current sport season) are linked to these issues.
METHODS: An anonymous survey assessed mental health (anxiety and depression) and substance use in varsity athlete

Zopiclone is the first of the cyclopyrrolones, a new class of psychotherapeutic agents possessing a pharmacological profile of high efficacy and low toxicity similar to that of the benzodiazepines. Binding is thought to occur to the benzodiazepine receptor complex, or to a site closely linked to this complex. Although zopiclone exhibits anticonvulsant, muscle relaxant and anxiolytic properties in animals, it finds better use as an hypnotic because of marked sedating effects. In clinical trials, zopiclone (usually 7.5 mg) improved sleep in chronic insomniacs similarly to nitrazepam 5 mg, fluraz

In this article, we briefly overview how the expression, measurement, and treatment of anxiety in autism may be different from the general population. We review the literature on links between sensory processing differences and anxiety, which show transdiagnostic patterns but are an especially prominent feature of anxiety in autism. Specifically, we focus on how the sense of interoception, i.e., how we perceive sensory information from within our bodies, contributes to anxiety in autism. We present new findings integrating multimodal interoceptive measures and total anxiety symptoms in a sampl

Negative rumination in social anxiety disorder (SAD) occurs in anticipation of a social event (pre-event rumination) and in its aftermath (post-event rumination). Both are proposed to be key maintaining factors of the vicious cycle of social anxiety. Despite this, there is a dearth of research investigating the processes that mediate the relationship between social anxiety and pre-event rumination and uncertainty regarding the cognitive and attentional processes that mediate the relationship between social anxiety and post-event rumination. To investigate this further, the current study utilis

A host of factors including genetic influences, temperament characteristics, learning experiences, information processing biases, parental psychopathology, and specific parenting practices have been hypothesized to contribute to the development and expression of children's phobias. In the present study, the authors focused on parental psychopathology (phobic anxiety) and parenting behaviors (warmth, involvement) in the prediction of child performance on a behavioral approach test (BAT). All children (n = 44) experienced a phobia of animals and were clinic referred. The youth completed two BATs
