Rheumatoid arthritis exacerbates apical periodontitis in Wistar rats, increasing IL-17, TNF-α, TRAP, and RANKL levels.

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of rheumatoid arthritis on the inflammatory and resorptive process of periapical lesions in an animal model. Forty Wistar rats were divided into four groups (n = 10): control (C), apical periodontitis (AP), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and AP + RA. RA was induced by two injections into the caudal subcutaneous tissue containing 50 µL volume of methylated bovine albumin (Met-BSA, 40 mg/mL) and 5% glucose emulsified with CFA/complete Freund's adjuvant (Mycobacterium sp), and a third intra-articular injection in the right knee with half of the same solution

Assessment of Risk Factors and Prognostic Predictors for Endo-Perio Lesions in Indian Cohorts: An Observational Study.

INTRODUCTION: Endodontic and periodontal tissues exhibit a significant interrelationship, whereby pathologies affecting one tissue can precipitate the involvement of the other. The primary objective of this study was to assess the risk factors associated with endo-perio lesions (EPLs). The secondary objective was to assess the prognostic predictors for such lesions and the prevalence rate of EPLs involving both pulpal and periodontal tissues in Indian cohorts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective observational study was conducted on 2170 teeth with EPLs in Indian adults aged > 18 years. A det

Present status and future directions: Imaging techniques for the detection of periapical lesions.

Diagnosing and treating apical periodontitis (AP) in an attempt to preserve the natural dentition, and to prevent the direct and indirect systemic effects of this condition, is the major goal in endodontics. Considering that AP is frequently asymptomatic, and is most often associated with a lesion in the periapex of the affected tooth, within the maxillary bones, imaging becomes of paramount importance for the diagnosis of the disease. The aim of this narrative review was to investigate the most relevant classic and current literature to describe which are, to date, the diagnostic imaging syst

Association of Inflammatory Periapical Lesions with Maxillary Sinus Abnormalities: a Retrospective Cone-Beam Computed Tomography Study.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM: Odontogenic infections such as periapical lesions (PLs) can cause changes in the adjacent tissues. Infection of the maxillary posterior teeth can be easily transmitted to the maxillary sinus and cause changes in the maxillary sinus mucosa. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) has high accuracy and sensitivity for detection of odontogenic lesions and is efficient for maxillary sinus assessment. PURPOSE: This study aimed to assess the maxillary sinuses for abnormalities such as mucosal thickening, polyps, and periostitis, and evaluate the periapical status of maxillary

Case Report: Root resorption caused after pulp death of adjacent primary molar.

Necrotic decayed primary molars with necrotic pulp tissues may show periapical involvement and root resorption. In this case report, a pediatric patient with a very common chief complain and clinical picture of necrotic badly decayed molar, introduced a very interesting case when radiographic investigation was performed, which showed that root resorption of the adjacent healthy molar occurred. The current report is, to the best of our knowledge, the first to report such finding in primary dentition.

Histological evaluation of the regenerative potential of injectable hyaluronic acid hydrogel or collagen with blood clot as scaffolds during revascularization of immature necrotic dog's teeth.

BACKGROUND: Regenerative endodontics' primary objective is to establish a favorable environment in the root canal by removing infection, providing a sturdy scaffold, and sealing the apical end of the tooth tightly. These actions should promote pulp regeneration and root development. AIM: This study evaluated histologically the regenerative potential of injectable hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogel or collagen with blood clot as scaffolds during revascularization of immature necrotic dog's teeth. METHODS: Sixteen permanent immature necrotic premolars with 32 roots were chosen from two 4-5-month-ol

Rare, simultaneous, multiple, and recurrent mandibular bone cysts.

Simple bone cysts, also referred to as traumatic bone cysts, are benign connective tissue-lined cavities occurring most commonly in young people. Most of the time, they occur as solitary radiolucencies. In the jaws, they also have been reported to occur concurrently with benign fibro-osseous lesions. The radiographic appearance of simple bone cysts could be confused with other jaw cysts and benign tumors. This case report presents a patient who had 3 separate lesions simultaneously within the mandible. The right mandibular lesion presented as a multilocular radiolucency. The 2 left mandibular

Creating labial bone for immediate implant placement: a minimally invasive approach by using orthodontic therapy in the esthetic zone.

Orthodontic extrusion of nonrestorable teeth has been used for almost 20 years as an alternative to bone grafting in preparation for implant placement. Although this technique predictably creates bone and soft tissue, and improves the socket diameter and depth, most of the bone apposition occurs in the marginal alveolar and periapical areas of the extruded tooth. To create more labial bone, the standard orthodontic extrusion technique was modified to apply pressure on the hopeless tooth both coronally and palatally, which allowed bone at the site to develop apically and labially. Gingival thic

Intrusion injuries of primary incisors. Part II: Sequelae affecting the intruded primary incisors.

Luxation injuries to incisors, including intrusive displacement, occur with a high frequency in the primary dentition. Intrusion injuries are associated with damage to the pulpal and periodontal structures and possible fracture of the alveolar bone. The pulpal tissue of the intruded tooth sustains a severe shock during displacement, which may be reflected later by sequelae ranging from mild discoloration to pulpal necrosis and infection. Disintegration of pulpal tissue may result in periapical tissue inflammation, which in turn may induce developmental disturbances in the germ of the permanent…

Infection-stimulated infraosseus inflammation and bone destruction is increased in P-/E-selectin knockout mice.

Infections of the dental pulp commonly result in infraosseus inflammation and bone destruction. However, the role of phagocytic leucocytes in the pathogenesis of pulpal infections has been uncertain. In this work we used P/E-/- selectin-deficient mice, which lack rolling adhesion of leucocytes to endothelium and mimic the human syndrome, leucocyte adhesion deficiency II (LAD-II), to test the hypothesis that phagocytic leucocytes protect against pulpal infection and subsequent periapical infraosseus bone resorption. P/E-/- mice and P/E+/+ wild-type controls were subjected to surgical pulp expos

Fusobacterium nucleatum triggers proinflammatory cell death via Z-DNA binding protein 1 in apical periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: Z-DNA binding protein 1 (ZBP1) is a vital innate immune sensor that regulates inflammation during pathogen invasion. ZBP1 may contribute to pyroptosis, apoptosis and necroptosis in infectious diseases. In this study, Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum) infection caused periapical inflammation through proinflammatory cell death and ZBP1 was involved in regulating the inflammatory activities caused by F. nucleatum infection in apical periodontitis (AP). METHODS: Human periapical tissues were tested by fluorescent in situ hybridization, immunohistochemical staining, immunofluoresc…

Decision-making in aesthetics: root coverage in periradicular surgery.

The primary objective of periradicular surgery is the predictable regeneration of periapical tissues with complete restoration of the anatomy of the mucogingival complex. In the recent years, aesthetics has become a fundamental factor in the evaluation of the treatment outcome, and surgeons have adopted specific techniques in order to preserve and enhance the aesthetics of the dentition and periodontium. In this investigation, the authors propose a surgical technique that allows the clinician to achieve optimal outcomes in endodontics, periodontics, and aesthetics for teeth selected for endodo…

Infection-related inferior alveolar and mental nerve paresthesia: case reports.

Nerve injury can be related to mechanical, chemical, and thermal factors. Infection-related paresthesia is usually related to mechanical pressure and ischemia associated with the inflammatory process. Another cause of paresthesia could be the toxic metabolic products of bacteria or inflammatory products released following tissue damage. This article presents cases of inferior alveolar and mental nerve paresthesia caused by an infected impacted tooth, an infected cyst, and periapical infection. The possible pathophysiologic mechanism of nerve injury, therapy, and prognosis for recovery are also

Dental Identification Utilizing Implant-Supported Fixed Prostheses in a Nearly Skeletonized Individual: A Case Report.

Forensic dental examination was performed on a nearly skeletonized decedent in whom both maxillary and mandibular complete dentures remained, an uncommon finding in deceased individuals. Careful manipulation of residual soft tissues permitted visualization of the underlying osseous and prosthetic components. Postmortem findings demonstrated extensive implant therapy in both arches, consisting of implant-supported fixed complete dentures retained by multiple endosseous implants. Antemortem dental records, including digital panoramic and periapical radiographs with treatment documentation, were

The role of autophagy in odontogenesis, dental implant surgery, periapical and periodontal diseases.

Autophagy is a cellular process that is evolutionarily conserved, involving the sequestration of damaged organelles and proteins into autophagic vesicles, which subsequently fuse with lysosomes for degradation. Autophagy controls the development of many diseases by influencing apoptosis, inflammation, the immune response and different cellular processes. Autophagy plays a significant role in the aetiology of disorders associated with dentistry. Autophagy controls odontogenesis. Furthermore, it is implicated in the pathophysiology of pulpitis and periapical disorders. It enhances the survival,

[General and local factors affecting periapical reparation after endodontic procedures].

Eighty-seven teeth with 100 periapical destruction foci have been treated in 78 patients from 19 to 60 years of age. In 28 patients calcium-containing preparation was administrated orally for 1 to 3 months. The dynamics of destruction foci changes was similar in all patients though among patients with satisfactory X-ray findings 64% took calcium-containing preparation. No considerable difference in the regeneration dynamics was revealed in patients with somatic diseases and healthy individuals. The residual destruction size 12 months later correlated positively with the initial size of destruc
