Periodic EEG discharges are signs of severe CNS dysfunction. In psychiatry they usually indicate presenile dementia of the Jacob-Creutzfeldt type. Psychiatric patients are presented in whom the occurrence and EEG features of diffuse and lateralized periodic discharges are discussed. It appears that toxic conditions other than acute barbiturate intoxication, such as drug withdrawal states and psychotropic drug overdosage, represent important etiological factors for inducing periodic EEG discharges. Their relation to clinical signs such as epileptic symptoms, metabolic dysfunction, and disturban

In 1963, Klein et al. first described two girls with normokalemic periodic paralysis and cardiac arrhythmia. We have observed a 15-year-old girl with cardiac arrhythmia and normokalemia but with some features of hyperkalemic, periodic paralysis. The patient showed a waddling gait and Gower's sign. She had atrophy of the proximal muscles and deep tendon reflexes were reduced. Her ECG showed bigeminy with multifocal premature ventricular contractions. At the start of an episode of muscle weakness, the serum potassium concentration rose from 3.1 to 4.4 mEq/l. Muscle weakness was not provoked by i

Simple complementary staining technics are useful to reveal some histological particularities which may be underestimated and unsuspected when are used routinal stainings only. Parallel to hematoxylin eosin, it is recommended to investigate the macrophagic cells by their soudanophilic properties on frozen sections, their ceroid like autofluorescent content by PAS and by paraldehyde fuchsin after oxidation. Eosinophils are constant in the thymus during the neonatal period. They result from a local eosinophilopoiesis. They are contrasted by chromotrope 2R or by anilin blue on ultraviolet light.

A 37-year-old white man with a multinodular goiter had thyrotoxicosis develop after iodine administration (Jodbasedow). His hyperthyroid state was accompanied by thyrotoxic periodic paralysis, a complication of hyperthyroidism that is usually seen in Orientals. The patient manifested typical features of each disorder. As classically described, these two thyroid-related disorders should rarely coexist because of epidemiologic considerations; however, the population at risk may be greater than has generally been appreciated.

Vasopressin concentrations were measured in the cord blood of thirty infants, thirteen delivered vaginally and seventeen by Caesarean section. There was no correlation with maternal values but the concentration following vaginal delivery (13.5 microunits/ml +/- 7.9 SD) was significantly higher than that following Caesarean section (4.2 microunits/ml +/- 6.6 SD). Gestational age did not affect the concentrations, which fell during the first week of life and then rose gradually in term and pre-term infants. High levels were found in seven sick babies. There was no correlation in the first 3 week

In this double-blind study dihydrotachysterol (DHT) was given orally to eight psychotic patients; in each case marked increases in psychosis and agitation accompanied increases in serum calcium and phosphorus within two weeks after active drug was substituted for placebo. In the three patients whose psychoses exhibited periodic spontaneous exacerbations, the agitated episodes grew more severe. Serum creatine phosphokinase (CPK) increased in all but one patient. By contrast, when three periodically psychotic patients received synthetic salmon calcitonin (SCT), the severity and frequency of agit

A patient with thyrotoxicosis from Graves' disease had concomitant muscular paralysis, hypophosphatemia, and severe hypokalemia. The parallel depression and return to normal of these electrolyte abnormalities and his neurologic status suggested that cellular ion influx was related to the paralysis.

The results are reported of cardiological examinations, including echocardiography, in nine members of a family suffering from hypokalaemic periodic paralysis, associated with permanent muscular weakness. The studies were performed in periods between attacks of paralysis. The slowly progressive permanent muscular weakness which is found in most of the patients with hypokalaemic periodic paralysis resembles a limb-girdle type dystrophy. Involvement of cardiac muscle is not uncommon in patients with limb-girdle dystrophy. Using a combination of echocardiography and ECG examination, nowadays the
