Immunomodulatory nanotherapeutic approaches for periodontal tissue regeneration.

Periodontitis is an infection-induced inflammatory disease characterized by progressive destruction of tooth supporting tissues, which, if left untreated, can result in tooth loss. The destruction of periodontal tissues is primarily caused by an imbalance between the host immune protection and immune destruction mechanisms. The ultimate goal of periodontal therapy is to eliminate inflammation and promote the repair and regeneration of both hard and soft tissues, so as to restore the physiological structure and function of periodontium. Advancement in nanotechnologies has enabled the developmen…

Periostin level in gingival crevicular fluid in periodontal disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Periostin, a secreted adhesion molecule, is a matricellular protein secreted most in periodontal ligament and periosteum. Periostin is also needed for integrity and maturation of periodontal tissue. This meta-analysis was conducted to compare the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) periostin levels in subjects having periodontal disease and healthy periodontium. METHODS: In this meta-analysis, three international database including PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science were searched and 207 studies retrieved. Also, the Google Scholar was searched to find more related studies (two studies …

Are Inflamed Periodontal Tissues Endogenous Source of Advanced Glycation End-Products (AGEs) in Individuals with and without Diabetes Mellitus? A Systematic Review.

Advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) are heterogeneous compounds formed when excess sugars condense with the amino groups of nucleic acids and proteins. Increased AGEs are associated with insulin resistance and poor glycemic control. Recently, inflamed periodontal tissues and certain oral bacteria were observed to increase the local and systemic AGE levels in both normoglycemic and hyperglycemic individuals. Although hyperglycemia induced AGE and its effect on the periodontal tissues is known, periodontitis as an endogenous source of AGE formation is not well explored. Hence, this systematic

NEAREST RESULTS OF TREATMENT OF EXACERBATED GENERALIZED PERIODONTITIS IN PATIENTS WITH MANIFESTATIONS OF PSYCHOEMOTIONAL STRESS.

To date, the common etiological factor of periodontal disease is periodontopathogenic microflora. In the case of favorable circumstances (the presence of systemic diseases, reduced general or local resistance), it multiplies rapidly and causes periodontal disease: gingivitis or periodontitis. Among these systemic lesions, psychological stress occupies a significant place. This should be taken into account in the complex treatment of patients with generalized periodontitis. In view of this, a drug regimen for the preparation of patients with generalized periodontitis of exacerbative course with

[Mechanisms and regulations in tooth root development].

Tooth loss caused by trauma, periodontitis or inherited disorders severely affects human physical and mental health. As an essential part of the tooth, tooth root is connected to periodontal tissues to maintain the tooth in the alveolar socket. To figure out the molecular mechanisms regulating tooth root development will contribute to the discovery of new approaches in tooth root regeneration. The development of tooth root is a complicated process involving communication between the epithelial and mesenchymal tissues and the regulation of multiple signaling pathways. The present article review

Temporal and spatial variation of the human microbiota during pregnancy.

Despite the critical role of the human microbiota in health, our understanding of microbiota compositional dynamics during and after pregnancy is incomplete. We conducted a case-control study of 49 pregnant women, 15 of whom delivered preterm. From 40 of these women, we analyzed bacterial taxonomic composition of 3,767 specimens collected prospectively and weekly during gestation and monthly after delivery from the vagina, distal gut, saliva, and tooth/gum. Linear mixed-effects modeling, medoid-based clustering, and Markov chain modeling were used to analyze community temporal trends, communit

Treating Stage IV periodontitis: the UK adolopment of the EFP Stage IV Periodontitis Treatment Guidelines.

The effects and treatment of periodontitis go beyond the inflammatory lesion of the periodontium, with sequelae of Stage IV and sometimes Stage III disease requiring rehabilitation of the dentition. In October 2022, the British Society of Periodontology carried out an adolopment process (in a similar fashion to the Stage I-III guideline) for the European Federation of Periodontology's S3 Clinical Guideline for the Treatment of Stage IV Periodontitis. This article covers the structure of an S3-level guideline in general and the adoloped recommendations across all case types for this specific gu…

[A clinical case of extracting foreign bodies from periodontal tissues of the patient's central maxillary incisors after uncontrolled orthodontic treatment].

Despite the improvement of protocols for eliminating diastema in children and adolescents, there are some cases of orthodontists prescribing the wearing of elastic bands, which, if worn uncontrollably and without retention points on the teeth, can enter the periodontium, causing destruction of the tissues surrounding the teeth. This iatrogenic complication, if unfavorable, may necessitate the extraction of teeth. The article presents a clinical case of removing elastic bands from periodontal tissues in a 9-year-old child which remained in periodontal tissues for more than 2 months.

[Preventive dentistry 7. Getting rid of halitosis].

Halitosis or bad breath is a problem that affects many people and its source is generally found in the oral cavity (intra-oral halitosis). Bacteria in the oral cavity produce volatile sulphur compounds such as hydrogen sulphide and methyl mercaptan that not only emit an unpleasant odour, but may also have toxic effects on the periodontal tissues. Good oral hygiene, a healthy periodontium and healthy teeth are the basis for the prevention of intra-oral halitosis and dentists and dental hygienists therefore play an essential role in its prevention.

Necrotizing periodontitis as a possible manifestation of common variable immunodeficiency.

Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is an inherited disease characterized by hypogammaglobulinaemia and impaired humoural immunoresponse and is mainly associated with recurrent infections of the airway and the digestive tract. An 18-year old female with a diagnosis of CVID associated with a devastating necrotizing periodontitis, ultimately resulting in complete destruction of the periodontium and loss of all teeth, is reported. Clinical, biochemical, microbiological and radiographic examinations are presented. The report highlights the likely importance of immunoglobulin replacement and in…

The physiology of tooth eruption.

Tooth eruption is a complex phenomenon that involves numerous biologic activities of the bone and the soft tissue surrounding teeth. While the exact mechanisms of eruption are not clearly understood, numerous experiments of nature, including many of the inborn errors of metabolism, should prove useful in their study. Nutritional studies may also prove useful, but will always be problematic [56]. Studies on endocrinologic changes such as puberty, pregnancy, menopause, and diseases such as diabetes, have already shown that the periodontium may not be able to accommodate to changes in the body's …
