PATIENTS: Review of patients born January 1, 2000, to December 31, 2007, with unilateral cleft lip and alveolus, with or without clefting of the secondary palate, who received GPP and/or secondary alveolar bone grafting (ABG). The management of large defects after head injury, osteomyelitis or both is usually solved by the use of bone grafts, polymerised material or metallic prosthesis. The post-operative course is often frustrating when those materials are close to the frontal sinus leading to the removal of this material. For these reasons, we decided to use free periostic flaps for the management of these skull defects. The flap comes from the internal part of the femur creating no other defect in the body. A case of periosteal ganglion in a 10-year-old boy is reported. The diagnosis of periosteal ganglion was made on roentgenographic and MR appearance and histologic evidence. The patient was successfully treated by excision. The follow-up examination showed no recurrence. Periosteal ganglia must be considered a cause of expanding cortical erosions. This lesion may mimic other peripheral expanding lesions.

Periosteal chondroma is an uncommon benign cartilagenous lesion, and its importance lies primarily in its characteristic radiographic and pathologic appearance which should be of assistance in the differential diagnosis of eccentric lesions of bones. The pathologist must be aware of this tumour because at a histologic level, it may closely resemble a more ominous cartilagenous lesion. He can exclude this lesion in a differential diagnosis of a primary cartilagenous bone neoplasm by familiarity with the clinical and radiological appearance of the lesion. Removal of toe nail is a minor procedure that can be under ring block with no significant complications. We report the case of a young lady who developed a rapidly growing subungual exostosis on her right great toe following nail removal. Inadvertent iatrogenic injury to the nail bed and underlying phalangeal periosteum during nail removal might have triggered off rapid bone growth resulting in the large exostosis. To our knowledge, this aetiology for subungual exostosis formation has not been reported before.

Linear scleroderma is a subtype of localized scleroderma that most commonly affects children. The disease is rare, and the course is unpredictable. Most cases spontaneously resolve in 3-5 years. A swelling and ache on the dorsum of the wrist in relation to the base of the 3rd metacarpal bone may indicate a bony lesion or an enlarged styloid process. It may also be due to an old fracture of the process or an accessory ossicle (os styloideum). Approximately half the 14 patients (15 wrists) had a history of an injury, usually a hit with the fist. Recurrent occupational strain may also produce symptoms at this site. Excision of the metacarpal base with the adjacent capitate or trapezoid, and repair of the periosteum and extensor tendon, will remove the lump and usually relieve symptoms.
