Immunohistochemical detection of neuronal plexuses and nerve cells within the upper urinary tract of pigs.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the distribution and topography of nervous structures within the renal pelvis and upper part of the ureter of pigs, and thus help to determine the origin, propagation and mechanisms of the modulation of pelvi-ureteric peristalsis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Whole-mount preparations of renal pelves from adult pigs were stained using a universal immunostaining method with streptavidin-alkaline phosphatase. Anti-neuron-specific enolase antibody and anti-neurofilament antibody were used as neuronal markers. RESULTS: The patterns of neuronal structures differed between the r…

Manometric variations following spiral myotomy for long-gap esophageal atresia.

We have previously demonstrated that a spiral myotomy and delayed definitive procedure is a viable alternative for esophageal reconstruction … ugh technique. We found that the three control dogs all had similar manometric findings with normal peristalsis. In contrast, the dogs with a spiral myotomy all had propagation of waves in the myotomized segment but termination of waves at the anastomotic site. There was delayed velocity through the myotomized segment and retrograde peristalsis distally. Fina …

Propagation of Pacemaker Activity and Peristaltic Contractions in the Mouse Renal Pelvis Rely on Ca2+-activated Cl- Channels and T-Type Ca2+ Channels.

The process of urine removal from the kidney occurs via the renal pelvis (RP). The RP demarcates the beginning of the upper urinary tract an … ted Ca2+ channels are important determinants of contraction initiation and maintain the fidelity of peristalsis as the spreading contraction moves further toward the ureter. Recruitment of Ca2+-activated Cl- channels, likely Anoctamin-1, and T-type Ca2+ channels are required for efficiently conducting the depolarizing current throughout the length of the RP. …

Reflux characteristics triggering post-reflux swallow-induced peristaltic wave (PSPW) in patients with GERD symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Esophageal chemical clearance has been evaluated with the post-reflux swallow-induced peristaltic wave (PSPW) index. The factors triggering PSPW in Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) have not yet been investigated. This multicenter study was aimed at evaluating the characteristics of reflux episodes associated with PSPW occurrence in patients with typical GERD symptoms. METHODS: Impedance-pH tracings from patients with typical reflux symptoms were analyzed. Sixteen healthy subjects were included for comparison. Multivariate analysis was performed to determine predictors of PS

Post-reflux swallow-induced peristaltic wave is impaired in laryngopharyngeal and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.

INTRODUCTION: Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) result from the reflux of gastric contents. The post-reflux swallow-induced peristaltic wave (PSPW) is an oesophageal reflex that facilitates chemical clearance of gastric contents following reflux events. PSPW index is a novel parameter that has been validated in assessing the effectiveness of chemical clearance in GORD, but not in LPR. This study aimed to assess chemical clearance in LPR and GORD by measuring PSPW indices in a consecutive series of patients. METHODS: Reviewers blindly analysed off-ther

Vickermania gen. nov., trypanosomatids that use two joined flagella to resist midgut peristaltic flow within the fly host.

BACKGROUND: The family Trypanosomatidae encompasses parasitic flagellates, some of which cause serious vector-transmitted diseases of humans … strategy that relies on constant movement preventing discharge from the host gut due to intestinal peristalsis. Since these parasites cannot attach to the midgut wall, they were forced to shorten the period of impaired motility when two separate flagella in dividing cells interfere with each other. The connection between the flagella ensures their coordinate …

Erythropoietin restores bowel damage and hypoperistalsis in gastroschisis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Despite the decreased mortality in gastroschisis (Gx), patients experience postoperative intestinal hypoperistalsis, malabsorption, and shortened bowel length. The trophic effects of recombinant human erythropoietin (rEpo) in the developing small bowel have been reported, increasing the length and height of the villi, and villous surface area. This study investigated the effects of rEpo on intestinal malfunction in the chick embryos with Gx. METHODS: Thirteen-day-old fertilized chicken eggs were used to create Gx model. Study groups included the following: group 1, con…

Oesophageal propulsive force and its relation to manometric pressure.

A fixed volume capsule incorporating a force transducer and a side hole for manometric measurements was constructed and calibrated. Simultaneous measurements of the propulsive (aboral) force and the manometric pressure (intraluminal pressure) were made at 5, 10, and 15 cm above the lower oesophageal sphincter and in response to dry and wet (5, 10, and 15 ml) swallows. The propulsive force and manometric pressure waves had a simultaneous onset and were of similar duration. Peak values of propulsive force for wet swallows increased significantly as measurements were made progressively more dista

[Gastroesophageal reflux disease].

The gastroesophageal reflux is a common clinical manifestation and it can be present under normal physiologic circumstances or may cause esophageal mucosal damage. This disease is currently believed to be ultifacorial in etiology, but the key in the dysfunction of the antireflux barrier, prolonged esophageal acid clearance and gastric emptying and lack in the esophageal mucosal resistance. The exposición repeatedly to clorhidric acid, pepsin and sometimes to bile salts and pancreatic enzymes may cause mucosal damage. The typical symptoms are heartburn and regurgitation, but the spectrum of man

[Motility of the colon: electric and manometric description of the mass movement].

"Mass movement" was described at the beginning of the century by radiologists, who occasionally observed during exploration a sudden transport of barium from one section of the colon to another. In this paper we focused our attention on the electromechanical factors that accompany evacuation through a colostomy, since we thought that these would be the myoelectrical and pressure translation of the "mass phenomenon" described by radiologists. We used an electromyographic recording probe to which a conventional microtransducer probe was affixed by suction. Using this method we made 24-hour recor

Jejunum versus colon for free oesophageal reconstruction: an experimental radiological assessment.

The reconstruction of the cervical oesophagus and the hypopharynx by revascularised bowel grafts has become a frequently described treatment option. Problems with the standard jejunal grafts have led us to suggest that the colon provides a suitable alternative. Experimental work in dogs demonstrates clear functional differences between colon and jejunum as free oesophageal grafts, and shows how structurally and functionally the colon integrates into the new position in the oesophagus better than the jejunum.

Myoelectrical activity and intraluminal flow in human sigmoid colon.

Myoelectric spike bursts were recorded in the sigmoid colon by means of an intraluminal silastic tube equipped with 3 Ag-AgCl ring electrodes fixed 15 cm apart on the tube that was introduced by flexible sigmoidoscopy. In six subjects, the tube was also equipped with three catheters whose tip opened 1 cm aborad from each electrode, for pressure recordings. In six other subjects, the tube was equipped with both electrodes and a catheter opening at the tip of the probe for infusing fluids at a rate of 12 ml/min into the colonic lumen. The fluid was collected with another tube inserted in the rec

[Role of platelet serotonin in hyperperistalsis after digestive hemorrhages].

Intestinal transit accelerates during gastroduodenal haemorrhage. To test a personal theory that the reason is to be found in serotonin released by platelets and absorbed by the intestine, the behaviour of serotoninaemia has been studied. This proved to be 1.35-9.7 microgram/l (mean: 4.175 microgram/l; E.S. +/- 1.39) in patients with haematemesis and melena, compared to 0.49-0.9 microgram/l (mean: 0.728 microgram/l; E.S. +/- 0.07) in the controls (p less than 0.001). The increase in circulating serotonin to significant values is probably due to hormone release. This dose not occur in cases of

Laparoscopic Heller Myotomy and Dor Fundoplication: How I Do It?

Achalasia is a primary esophageal motility disorder characterized by lack of esophageal peristalsis and partial or absent relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter in response to swallowing. Available treatment modalities are not curative but rather intend to relieve patient' symptoms. A laparoscopic Heller myotomy with Dor fundoplication is associated with high clinical success rates and low incidence of postoperative reflux. A properly executed operation following critical surgical steps is key for the success of the operation.

Congenital chloride diarrhoea: case report and review of the literature.

Congenital chloride diarrhoea (CCD) usually presents with abdominal distension, visible peristalsis and watery stools from birth that show chloride loss of more than 90 mmol/l. It may mimic low intestinal obstruction on antenatal ultrasound scanning after 30 weeks' gestation. This condition has been reported mainly from Finland. We report a case of CCD in a Saudi boy which was suspected antenatally, confirmed post-natally and managed successfully.

Pulsed irrigation enhanced evacuation: new method for treating fecal impaction.

Fecal impaction is a common problem in patients with neurologic impairment. The pulsed irrigation enhanced evacuation (PIEE) procedure is a new method of clearing fecal impactions using pulses of small amounts of warm water to rehydrate stool and improve peristalsis. Thirty-seven PIEE procedures were performed on 28 patients with a variety of neurologic problems. The PIEE procedure was observed to be effective and safe. It should be a useful adjunct to a proper bowel management program.
