Since the mid 1980s, a resurgence of tuberculosis has occurred. The disease is and will remain a serious public health threat worldwide. The clinical and radiologic features of abdominal tuberculosis may mimic those of many diseases. Radiologists evaluating abdominal images should consider the diagnosis of abdominal tuberculosis in immigrants from areas endemic for tuberculosis, in immunocompromised patients, and in high-risk patients such as the homeless. Imaging features that suggest the correct diagnosis are cecal amputation, ileocecal thickening and inflammation, shortening of the ascendin

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of ultrasound-guided (USG) fine-needle aspiration cytology examination (FNAC) of the omentum in the diagnosis of abdominal tuberculosis (TB).
METHODS: Retrospective review was conducted of data from patients who presented with clinically suspected peritoneal TB between June 2016 and April 2018. We included patients in whom imaging showed omental thickening with or without ascites. Additional features that were assessed on imaging included ascites, the presence of mesenteric or retroperitoneal adenopathy, ileocecal thickening, and involvement of solid abdominal or

INTRODUCTION: Abdominal tuberculosis is one of the most common non-pulmonary tuberculosis infection sites, and it relates to immunosuppression. The nonspecific features of this form of tuberculosis make an accurate diagnosis difficult. The aim of this study is to report seven (7) patients diagnosed with abdominal tuberculosis requiring surgery at the Clinical Hospital of Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
METHODS: A descriptive analysis of seven cases of abdominal tuberculosis treated in our center between August 2001 and June 2013 was performed to characterize its clinical presentatio

Tuberculosis and sarcoidosis are two different diseases with different etiology, clinical features and treatment. Both are granulomatous disease, but tuberculosis has a caseating necrosis granuloma as opposed to sarcoidosis witch present noncaseating epithelioid cell granuloma. If chest radiography shows hilar lymphadenopathy and hystopatological features reveal no caseating necrosis granuloma the differential diagnosis might be difficult. This is a case of abdominal adenopathy in a 39-years-old male, with a past medical history significant for pulmonary tuberculosis. The patient was admitted

Peritoneal tuberculosis mimics advanced ovarian cancer because of the similarities in clinical signs and symptoms such as ascites, pelvic and abdominal pain and mass, and elevation of serum CA125 level. We have presented four cases of peritoneal tuberculosis that underwent exploratory laparotomy for suspected advanced ovarian cancer during a 3-year period. Definitive diagnosis of tuberculosis was performed at laparotomy in all the cases. The frozen-section analysis seems to be the gold standard in the differential diagnosis. In view of these data, clinical diagnosis of advanced ovarian cancer

A 48-yr-old female presented with a 1-yr history of pain in the hypochondrium and epigastrium. All routine investigations and computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen were done. CT findings revealed a well-defined cystic mass in the right ovary, and ascitis with features suggestive of secondaries over the omentum and peritoneal surface. The serum CA125 was 1255 U/mL (normal range 0-35 U/mL), which was indicative of ovarian malignancy. An exploratory laparotomy was performed. Histopathological examination of organs revealed the presence of granuloma. The patient was advised to undergo antituberc

OBJECTIVES: Abdominal tuberculosis (ATB) is the second most common type of extra-pulmonary tuberculosis. Though it does not usually pose a significant risk of infectivity, ATB can go unidentified and progress to disseminated infection. The aim of this study is to highlight the incidence and outcome of this infection in a tertiary care centre in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA).
METHODS: In this retrospective study, we included all ATB patients admitted to our centre between January 1 st, 2010 and December 31, 2018. A total of 42 patients with a median age of 49 (range 18-83 years, 78.6% male

Cutaneous leukocytoclastic vasculitis (CLV) is a vasculitis that involves mainly small blood vessels in the skin. CLV has different causes (drugs, infections, or neoplastic or systemic inflammatory diseases). Sporotrichosis has rarely been associated with CLV. We report a case of disseminated cutaneous sporotrichosis caused by microorganisms in the Sporothrix clade in a Chinese woman with a tuberculous peritonitis history. Her lesions included many ulcers with crusts on the limbs. A skin biopsy yielded a histologic diagnosis of leukocytoclastic vasculitis. Periodic acid-Schiff and Grocott meth

The Spanish famous writer Leopoldo Alas, also known by the pseudonymous of "Clarín" suffered from two main kind of illnesses: nervous and digestives. Both began early, when he was only thirty two. At that moment, and during all his thirties, nervous ailments were conspicuous, but digestive problems were growing up slow but steadily and became the most serious and even menacing during his forties. Nervous pathology was double: on the one hand, some attacks of migraine with visual disturbances (scotoma), dysphasia and other "indescribable nervous oddities", which happened about 4-5 times per yea

The various ultrasound (US) findings in 90 patients with abdominal (gastrointestinal, peritoneal, mesenteric and lymph node) tuberculosis (TB) studied in an area of high incidence of TB over a 1 year period were analysed. The lesions encountered were intestinal (n = 31), extraintestinal (n = 39), or a combination (n = 20). The extraintestinal lesions included free and loculated ascites (n = 36), localized ascites ('Club Sandwich sign') (n = 4), adhesions (n = 14), peritoneal thickening (n = 14), peritoneal nodules (n = 3), lymphadenopathy (n = 23) and cold abscesses (n = 10)-of these, the pres

Abdominal Cocoon Syndrome (ACS) is an uncommon medical condition defined by the encasement of the small intestine within a robust fibrocollagenous membrane, frequently resulting in intestinal obstruction. The clinical presentation of this syndrome is varied, which complicates its diagnosis due to both its atypical symptoms and infrequency. This review offers an extensive summary of the existing knowledge regarding ACS, concentrating on its causes, clinical manifestations, diagnostic imaging, pathological features, treatment modalities, and prognostic implications. Recent case studies and resea

Pulse granuloma, a benign granulomatous lesion, develops due to foreign body reactions to food particles. This rare entity occurs occasionally in the abdominal cavity. However, it has never been reported as a pelvic mass or a recurrent case. A 37-year-old woman with a medical history of pelvic granulomatous lesions treated in Thailand, was admitted for abdominal pain. Imaging study revealed a pelvic complex cyst and disseminated nodules. Ovarian cancer or tuberculous peritonitis was suspected. The appearance at laparotomy was an inflammatory mass encased in adhesions; therefore, only biopsy wa

Abdominal tuberculosis (TB) is the sixth most common location of extrapulmonary TB involvement. Because its symptoms and signs are often nonspecific, laboratory and imaging findings mimic other diseases including carcinoma. Therefore, the diagnosis of abdominal TB is challenging. We herein report a case of 74-year-old woman who presented with abdominal pain, anorexia, and weight loss. She had been given a diagnosis of pancreatic head carcinoma. Laboratory data was unremarkable except for elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, CA125, and sIL-2R. CT scan revealed multiple enlarged peripancreat

BACKGROUND: Although tuberculosis (TB) is a major health problem worldwide, primary extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB), and in particular female genital tract infection, remains a rare event.
CASE REPORT: A 35-year-old human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) seropositive woman of African descent with lower abdominal pain and fever of two days duration underwent surgery due to left adnexal mass suggesting pelvic inflammatory disease. The surgical situs showed a four quadrant peritonitis, consistent with the clinical symptoms of the patient, provoked by a tuboovarian abscess (TOA) on the left side.

The clinical features of 81 cases of abdominal tuberculosis (TB) are presented. The peritoneum was involved in 41 patients, the ileocecal area in 17, the anorectal area in 16, and mesenteric glands in 8. There was one case each involving the liver and sigmoid colon. Most patients were young women. The tuberculin reaction was significant in 83% of patients tested, and 54% had evidence of TB elsewhere. Tuberculous peritonitis was more common in native North American Indians and presented as an acute abdomen, abdominal tumor, or cirrhosis. Asians developed the majority of ileocecal and mesenteric

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the clinical presentation and etiology of ascites in HIV seropositive patients compared with the general population and to analyze the safety and clinical efficacy of abdominal paracentesis in HIV patients.
METHODS: We did a multiyear study of 24 HIV seropositive and 60 control patients with ascites undergoing diagnostic abdominal paracentesis at two university hospitals.
RESULTS: HIV seropositive patients presented with similar clinical findings as other patients with ascites, except HIV patients had a significantly higher incidence of pyrexia and a lower serum albumin

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading cause of infectious morbidity and mortality worldwide. Extrapulmonary TB, particularly abdominal TB, is a diagnostic challenge due to its nonspecific presentation and often low sensitivity for conventional tests. Immunocompromised patients, such as those with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), are at increased risk and may lack classic systemic symptoms, preventing timely diagnosis. A 61-year-old HIV-positive female on antiretroviral therapy and with an undetectable viral load presented with progressive abdominal distension, postprandial fullness, and alter

The authors report 4 cases of encapsulating peri-hepatitis, including an angiographic study. Selective arteriography of the coeliac trunk showed extremely sinuous intra-hepatic arteries in 3 of these cases, and obstruction of the portal vein, in one case. Catheterisation of the hepatic veins showed a pressure gradient between the obstructed hepatic vein and the free supra-hepatic pressure, showing a post-sinusoidal block. In 2 of the 4 cases, ascites was chylous. Lymphography carried out via lymphatics in the foot was negative in 3 cases where it was carried out. One case showed, on two succes
