Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent organic pollutants known to have deleterious effects on child and adult development; however, less is known about the relationship between mother-newborn exposure levels. The objective of this study is to understand prenatal PCB exposure and its association with gene expression, using data from a cohort of exposed mothers and infants in eastern Slovakia. For 91 mothers and infants participating in this study, serum PCB concentrations were determined using gas chromatography and high-resolution mass spectrometry. Affymetrix microarray was performe…

Heterogeneous catalytic ozonation is a promising technique for water purification, effectively addressing persistent organic pollutants. This study successfully synthesized oxygen-vacancy-rich Fe2O3/montmorillonite (Fe-MMT-400) nanocomposites via an integrated calcination strategy for enhanced catalytic ozonation of bisphenol A (BPA). Material characterization confirmed the effective structural integration and dispersion of acicular hematite on MMT substrates. XRD, FTIR, and XPS analyses verified the formation of oxygen vacancies (OV), while BET measurements revealed an increased specific surf…

The term "Plastisphere" refers to the biofilm layer naturally formed by microorganisms attaching to plastic surfaces. This layer possesses the capability to adsorb persistent organic and inorganic pollutants, particularly trace metals, which are the focus of this research study. Immersion experiments were concurrently conducted in five locations spanning four European countries (France, Ireland, Spain, and Italy) utilising eight distinct polymers. These immersions, repeated every three months over a one-year period, aimed to evaluate the baseline bioaccumulation of 12 trace metals. The study u

Perfluorinated alkylated substances (PFAS), as a category of persistent organic pollutants, have garnered extensive concern due to their resilience against environmental degradation. Herein, we developed an amine-functionalized sphalerite (ZnS) with adjustable surface amine functional groups and Zn defects (ZnS-X%[N]) by in situ coprecipitation and simple hydrothermal method in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). This material demonstrated efficient PFAS adsorption and subsequent photo-induced degradation under UV irradiation. The characterization results by TEM, BET, FTIR, …

This study explored a possible destruction of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) as example of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) as well as the dechlorination mechanism by directly using minerals in the soil, such as antigorite, talc and olivine. Compared with a stable quartz phase of SiO2, all three Mg silicate minerals demonstrated certain degrading capacity for HCB with different efficiency order as: antigorite > talc > olivine > SiO2 at 2 h of milling time. Interestingly, olivine exhibited a better performance than antigorite at 4 h of milling time, giving destruction percentage of 92.7% over 89.0…

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a class of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that have adverse effects on human health. However, the long-term health effects and potential mechanism of neonatal exposure to PCBs are still unclear. In this study, nursing male mice exposed to PCB138 at 0.5, 5, and 50 μg/kg body weight (bw) from postnatal day (PND) 3 to PND 21 exhibited increased serum uric acid levels and liver uric acid synthase activity at 210 days of age. We also found an increased kidney somatic index in the 50 μg/kg group and kidney fibrosis in the 5 and 50 μg/kg groups. Mechanistica…

The study of the interaction of persistent organic pollutants with biosubstrates helps to unravel the pathways for toxicity, however, few mechanistic data are present in the literature for these systems. We analyzed the binding of paraquat (PQ) and diquat (DQ) herbicides to natural calf thymus DNA and a DNA G-quadruplex by spectrophotometric titrations, ethidium bromide exchange tests, viscometry, and melting experiments. The interaction with bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein was studied spectrofluorimetrically at different temperatures. The retention of the targets on positive, negative, and…

Dragonflies (Order Odonata) often are considered to be biosentinels of environmental contamination, e.g., heavy metals and/or persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Dragonflies (n = 439) belonging to 15 species of 8 genera were collected from an abandoned mercury (Hg) mining region in China to investigate the bioaccumulation of total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg). THg and MeHg concentrations in dragonflies varied widely within ranges of 0.06-19 mg/kg (average: 1.5 ± 2.2 mg/kg) and 0.02-5.7 mg/kg (average: 0.75 ± 0.65 mg/kg), respectively. THg and MeHg were positively correlated with bodywei…

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are high production chemicals, which leads to their ubiquitous presence in the environment. To date, few studies have measured CPs in humans and typically at relatively low concentrations, despite indications that exposure may be high compared to various persistent organic pollutants. The aim of this study is to investigate the in vitro biotransformation of CPs by human liver fractions. We determined the changes of the CP concentrations after the enzymatic transformation with human liver microsomes using a two-tiered in vitro approach. CP concentrations decreased wi…

Many widespread and persistent organic pollutants, for example, 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) and some polychlorinated biphenyls, activate the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) causing it to translocate to the cell nucleus where it transactivates target genes, increasing expression of a number of xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes as well as some transporters. AhR's ability to target transporters within the kidney is essentially unexplored. We show here that exposing isolated killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus) renal proximal tubules to micromolar β-naphthoflavone (BNF) or nanomolar TCDD…

Teleosts and pond-breeding amphibians may be exposed to a wide variety of anthropogenic, waterborne contaminants that affect the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis. Because thyroid hormone is required for their normal development and reproduction, the potential impact of HPT-disrupting contaminants on natural teleost and amphibian populations raises special concern. There is laboratory evidence indicating that persistent organic pollutants, heavy metals, pharmaceutical and personal care products, agricultural chemicals, and aerospace products may alter HPT activity, development, and rep…

Humans are exposed to many environmental chemicals, some of which can potentially affect neurodevelopment. Fetuses, infants, and young children are the most susceptible to the effects of these chemicals. As part of the National Health and Examination Survey, 1999-2000, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analyzed biological samples for many of these chemicals in a representative sampling of the U.S. population. Concentration data of selected metals, persistent organic pollutants, organophosphorus and carbamate insecticides, and cotinine are presented. For example, the 95th percentil…

Globally, there has been a significant rise in cholera cases and deaths, with an increase in the number of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) reporting outbreaks. In parallel, plastic pollution in LMICs is increasing, and has become a major constituent of urban dump sites. The surfaces of environmental plastic pollution can provide a habitat for complex microbial biofilm communities; this so-called 'plastisphere' can also include human pathogens. Under conditions simulating a peri-urban environmental waste pile, we determine whether toxigenic Vibrio cholerae (O1 classical; O1 El Tor; O13

Soil pollution by As and Hg is a pressing environmental issue given their persistence. The intricate removal processes and subsequent accumulation of these elements in soil adversely impact plant growth and pose risks to other organisms in the food chain and to underground aquifers. Here we assessed the effectiveness of non-toxic industrial byproducts, namely coal fly ash and steelmaking slag, as soil amendments, both independently and in conjunction with an organic fertilizer. This approach was coupled with a phytoremediation technique involving Betula pubescens to tackle soil highly contamin

Soil microplastic (MP) pollution is a growing global concern, with MPs ubiquitously detected across ecosystems. This review systematically examines the multifaceted interactions between MPs and soil dissolved organic matter (DOM), focusing on three core mechanisms: physical adsorption, chemical reactions, and microbial mediation. We highlight how MPs transition from passive carriers to active reactors of DOM, influencing DOM molecular diversity, stability, and environmental persistence. Key findings include the role of MP aging in generating reactive oxygen species that accelerate DOM minerali
