PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of phacoemulsification cataract surgery on Schlemm's canal (SC) using swept-source optical coherence tomography (OCT).
METHODS: Patients with a senile cataract were included. The SC area and diameter were checked by OCT at the baseline and 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, and 6 months after the cataract surgery. Multivariate linear regression analysis was performed for predictors of change in the mean SC area and diameter.
RESULTS: Twenty-five eyes (25 patients) were included in the final analysis. After the cataract surgery, there was a significant increase in the SC…

PURPOSE: To compare toric intraocular lens (IOL) implantation and astigmatic keratotomy (AK) in correction of astigmatism during phacoemulsification.
SETTING: Tertiary care hospital.
DESIGN: Prospective randomized trial.
METHODS: Consecutive patients with visually significant cataract and moderate astigmatism (1.25 to 3.00 diopters [D]) were randomized into 2 groups. Temporal clear corneal 2.75 mm phacoemulsification with toric IOL implantation was performed in the toric IOL group and with 30-degree coupled AK at the 7.0 mm optic zone in the keratotomy group. The uncorrected (UDVA) and corr…

UNLABELLED: RATIONALE (HYPOTHESIS): Although cataract and glaucoma represent an increasingly common situation encountered concomitantly, the management of this association is still debatable. OBJECTIVE (AIM): We aimed to assess intraocular pressure dynamics after phacoemulsification in patients with uncontrolled primary open angle glaucoma (POAG).
METHODS AND RESULTS: The present study was designed as a prospective, non-randomized, cohort study. The study population comprised of 38 patients with medically uncontrolled POAG who underwent cataract surgery by phacoemulsification between 2011 and…

Objective. To report a case of toxic anterior segment syndrome (TASS) that was caused by inadvertent anterior chamber and cornea stromal injection with high dose gentamicin following cataract surgery. Methods. Case report. Results. We report a 72-year-old female patient who developed TASS that was caused by high dose gentamicin (20 mg/0.5 mL), which was inadvertently used during the formation of the anterior chamber and hydration of the corneal incision. Unlike previous cases, hyphema and hemorrhagic fibrinous reaction were seen in the anterior chamber. Despite treatment, bullous keratopathy d

PARTICIPANTS: Hypothetical cohort of patients undergoing cataract surgery in the better eye based on a review of the current literature and our direct experience using LCS.
METHODS: A cost-effectiveness decision tree model was constructed to analyze the cost-effectiveness of LCS compared with PCS. Complication rates of cataract surgery were obtai…

OBJECTIVE: To compare the spatial resolutions of dynamic optotypes at different speed levels among age-related cataract patients, older people with clear crystalline lenses and senile individuals implanted with intraocular lenses (IOL).
METHODS: The control study recruited 24 patients (48 eyes) with age-related cataract scheduled for phacoemulsification surgery in our hospital between Jul. 2011 and Dec. 2011 in the cataract group. Twenty-three older volunteers (46 eyes) with clear crystalline lenses were enrolled in the normal group. The postoperative group consisted of 23 contemporary cases …

PURPOSE: To report a case of corneal primary acquired melanosis (PAM) with atypia after cataract surgery.
METHODS: Retrospective case report with literature review.
RESULTS: Excision of an elevated pigmented conjunctival lesion was performed at the time of cataract extraction by clear corneal phacoemulsification by an outside surgeon. Histopathologic examination revealed PAM with atypia. Three months after the initial surgery, recurrent melanosis involving the peripheral corneal epithelium was noted, with extension of pigment into the corneal stroma through the paracentesis site. Excision of…

PURPOSE: The benefit of cataract surgery in the general population concerning visual acuity and subjective visual function has been well established. However, a small proportion of patients are dissatisfied after cataract surgery. Our study aims to evaluate patients' dissatisfaction after phacoemulsification cataract surgery related to low visual function and to analyze the factors associated with this outcome.
METHODS: 397 patients, who underwent uneventful phacoemulsification cataract surgery, participated in the study. All the participants completed a self-administered questionnaire which …

BACKGROUND/AIM: Phacoemulsification is a modern surgical technique for cataract operations. Through minimal corneal wound (2.2-2.7 mm) lens nucleus is emulsificated and arteficial lens is implanted in capsular bag. Complications during operations are possible, and can vary from minor to very serious one, with consecutive visual loss. One of possible complications is rupture of posterior lens capsule, which could happen in any stage of operation. The aim of this study was to evaluate results of monoblock arteficial lens implantation in sulcus on the remains of anterior capsule and capsulorhexis…

PURPOSE: To compare the amount of intraoperative energy used during conventional and torsional phacoemulsification surgery and investigate the changes in corneal endothelial cell density.
METHODS: In this study, a total of 100 eyes in patients with age-related cataract (mean age 68.9 years) were included. Patients were randomly allocated into conventional (group 1) or torsional (OZil, group 2) phacoemulsification. Mean nuclear grade made according to Lens Opacities Classification System II was not different in the 2 groups. Total ultrasound time (USTT), cumulative dissipated energy (CDE), and…

PURPOSE: To assess the long-term effect of vitreous loss during phacoemulsification on intraocular pressure (IOP) control in glaucoma patients.
SETTING: Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre, City Hospital, Birmingham, United Kingdom.
METHODS: In this study, 26 glaucoma cases with vitreous loss during phacoemulsification were identified from operative room records. The cases were performed from January 1999 to December 2001. Minimum follow-up was 12 months. Postoperative IOP control in eyes with vitreous loss (Group 1) was assessed and compared with that in stable fellow eyes (Group 2), which se…

METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted of all patients who had PPV for posteriorly dislocated lens fragments after phacoemulsification between January 2000 and September 2004 in the Vitreoretinal Service at King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Demographics, preexisting eye diseases, details of the previous cataract surgery, findings at presentation, details of the vitreoretinal procedures, final vi…

PURPOSE: This study set out to evaluate the influences of uneventful phacoemulsification on the anterior segment parameters obtained with the Pentacam rotating Scheimpflug camera and intraocular pressure (IOP).
METHODS: A total of 42 eyes of 34 patients (26 men, eight women) were evaluated preoperatively, and at 1, 3 and 6 months postoperatively with the Pentacam. Intraocular pressure was measured with the Goldmann applanation tonometer. The non-parametric paired t-test was used to compare preoperative and 1-, 3- and 6-month postoperative measurements of anterior chamber depth (ACD), anterior…
