It was found that cytochrome oxidase from bovine cardiac muscle possesses marked superoxide dismutase activity. Superoxide dismutase activity is inhibited by cyanide and azide or by alkaline or thermal treatments. This activity is also suppressed by chelating agents, e.g. bathocuproin. The data obtained indicate that superoxide dismutase activity of cytochrome oxidase is due to the copper atoms of the enzyme. The experiments on the copper-containing subunit support this conclusion. Possible physiological significance of superoxide dismutase activity of cytochrome oxidase is discussed.

A microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD) was developed for the quantitation of ferrous ions (Fe2+) and total iron in iron sucrose administered in iron deficiency anemia. The elemental iron content is 20 mg/mL and USP established a limit of Fe2+ as 0.4 % (w/v). The μPAD allowed the quantitation of Fe2+ by complexation with 1,10-phenanthroline, forming an orange-red complex analysed by imageJ®. For total iron determination, ferric ion (Fe3+) was reduced to Fe2+ using ascorbic acid prior to complexation. The device was prepared on chromatographic paper by using the wax printing method.

Prothioconazole (PTC) is a widely used agricultural fungicide, and its parent and metabolite prothioconazole-desthio (dPTC) have been detected in diverse environmental media. This study was aimed at investigating the gender-dependent effects on adult zebrafish reproduction and intergenerational effects on offspring development following parental exposure to PTC and dPTC. The results showed that after the adult zebrafish (F0) was exposed to 0.5 and 10 μg/L PTC and dPTC for 21 days, the fertility and gametogenesis of female zebrafish were decreased more significantly than that of male zebrafish.

Histamine release from human lung fragments, passively sensitized and challenged with antigen under standardized experimental conditions, varied between 0 and 41.2% (mean +/- SD 15.6 +/- 10.0%) in 89 experiments. Over 41 lungs, the mean coefficient of variation for release from 10 to 28 tissue replicates was 21.4% (range 7-44%). We have improved a method for the removal of the type 2 copper from tree laccase under anaerobic reducing conditions and developed a mechanistic model.
