BACKGROUND: Paraoxonase 1 (PON1) is an antioxidant enzyme bound to plasma high-density lipoproteins and is also present in the brain.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to estimate the activity of PON1 in patients with different types of MS.
METHODS: The PON1 activity toward paraoxon and phenyl acetate and lipid profile was examined in 40 relapsing-remitting (RR) patients in relapse, in 42 RR patients in remission, in 55 progressive MS patients and in 40 healthy individuals.

Circadian and circatrigintan (menstrual) rhythms in biogenic amines were studied in premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Selection of patients and controls was based on assessment of Menstrual Distress Questionnaires (MDQs). Changes in extracellular DOPAC levels were monitored simultaneously in the nucleus accumbens and striatum of halothane/N2O anaesthetised rats using in vivo differential pulse voltammetry with carbon fibre electrodes following repeated administration of the atypical neuroleptics thioridazine and clozapine. Serial determinations of spinal fluid homovanillic acid (HVA) and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) were made in four patients with the Lesch-Nyhan syndrome over a 5-year period. Control spinal fluids for age-matched comparison were obtained from 194 neurologic and nonneurologic pediatric patients. A rapid decline in control spinal fluid HVA and 5-HIAA occurs over the first 3 years of life (50 and 60%, respectively), and a more gradual decline persists throughout adolescence.
