Phenology and population dynamics of sand flies in a new focus of visceral leishmaniasis in Eastern Azarbaijan Province, North western of Iran.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate species composition, density, accumulated degree-day and diversity of sand flies during April to October 2010 in A … n-weaver formula ( H'=∑i=1sPilog(e)Pi). RESULTS: Totally 5 557 specimens comprising 16 Species (14 Phlebotomus, and 2 Sergentomyia) were indentified. The activity of the species extended from April to October. Common sand-flies in resting places were Phlebotomus papatasi, Phlebotomus sergenti and Phlebotomus mongolensis. The monthly average density was 37.6, …

Geographical Information Systems in Determination of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis Spatial Risk Level Based on Distribution of Vector Species in Imamoglu Province, Adana.

The Imamoglu district located in the southeast of Adana province in Turkey is an endemic focus of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) owing to dominancy of Phlebotomus tobbi, which is a probable vector of Leishmania infantum. About 11.26% of CL cases reported each year are from Imamoglu, Adana, and between 2008 and 2015, 223 cases of CL were reported. Leishmania infantum, which may be transmitted by P. tobbi, Phlebotomus neglectus/syriacus, and Phlebotomus perfiliewi, is referred as leishmaniasis factor in Adana. Thus, the aim of this study was to map the risk areas for each sand fly species using re…

Sandfly Fever with Skin Lesions: A Case Series from Turkey.

Sand fly fever (SF) is an arthropod-borne viral disease, also known as "Phlebotomus fever", "mosquito fever", three-day fever or "Papatacci fever". It is transmitted by Phlebotomus papatasi, starts with acute onset of high fever, and lasts for three days. We present first cases in a different district of Turkey with the clinical findings of fever, myalgia-arthralgia, headache, gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhoea and nausea-vomiting and skin lesions (in two of them). All the patients were treated symptomatically and discharged with complete cure. These cases are indicating that sand fly…

Adenosine, AMP, and protein phosphatase activity in sandfly saliva.

As they probe the skin for blood, sand flies inject saliva that prevents hemostasis. Sand fly saliva also promotes leishmaniasis by suppressing immunologic functions of macrophages. Saliva of Phlebotomus papatasi, the vector of Old World cutaneous leishmaniasis, contains adenosine and AMP. We show that Ph. papatasi saliva as well as pure adenosine down-regulate the expression of the inducible nitric oxide (NO) synthase gene in activated macrophages. In addition Ph. papatasi, but not Lutzomyia longipalpis, saliva inhibits the production of NO. Taken together, these data suggest that salivary ad…

Serological studies on the epidemiology of sandfly fever in the Old World.

Selected human sera from 59 different localities in Africa, the Mediterranean littoral, eastern Europe and Asia were examined by plaque reduction neutralization test against eight sandfly (Phlebotomus) fever virus serotypes (Sicilian, Naples, Arumowot, SudAn 754-61, Karimabad, Salehabad, Gordil and Saint Floris) known to occur in the Old World. Results of these studies provide new information on the geographic distribution and prevalence of human infection with each of the viruses. Specific neutralizing antibodies were detected against all of the agents except Salehabad. Naples and Sicilian an…

Widespread transmission in diverse ecotypes challenges visceral leishmaniasis control in East Africa.

East Africa is emerging as the global hot spot of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), yet efforts to eliminate it are hindered by substantial knowledge gaps in its ecoepidemiology. In Aba Roba, Ethiopia, Ph. martini accounted for 99% of 184 collected Phlebotomus females and had a lower infection rate of 1.5%. Ph. orientalis and Ph. mart…

Bionomics of the unexplored sand flies fauna of District Mohmand, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan: assessing risk factors associated with cutaneous leishmaniasis.

BACKGROUND: Sand flies are of considerable public health importance in Pakistan because these insects are vectors of leishmaniasis. The current study explores the bionomics of sand flies, their spatial distribution pattern and cutaneous leishmaniasis-associated risk factors in District Mohmand, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. METHODS: Sand flies were collected from indoor and outdoor habitats in 69 villages of five tehsils in Mohmand during July-October 2019. Risk factor data were recorded for 829 households in 94 villages. RESULTS: In total, 2065 sand flies were captured. Phlebotomus (Paraphl…

Bionomics of Phlebotomine Sand Flies in Different Climates of Leishmaniasis in Fars Province, Southern Iran.

BACKGROUND: Phlebotomus and Sergentomya are distributed in the old-world regions and transmit leishmaniases through mammalian and reptile hosts. Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is one of the most important diseases in Iran. Iranian sand flies belong to three Oriental, Palearctic, and Afrotropical Regions. Fars Province is located in Palearctic, but southern parts are affected Oriental region situations on phglebotomine population variety. Therefore, a comprehensive study was required on the vectors of the disease in this Province. METHODS: Regarding the approved role of the environmental factors…

The Sporadic cutaneous leishmaniasis due to Leishmania infantum in Morocco: A presumably trend towards endemicity.

In Morocco, cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is an endemic disease; it is considered a major public health problem caused by three species Leishmaniamajor, Leishmaniatropica, and the dermotropic variant MON-24 of Leishmaniainfantum. This species has three incriminated vectors named; Phlebotomus ariasi, Phlebotomus longicuspis and Phlebotomus perniciosus, with the dog as reservoir. The main aim of this review is to elucidate the current epidemiological pattern of CL due to L.infantum and to investigate the factors facilitating its propagation throughout the country. Therefore, the number of CL cases…
