Quality of life in anxiety and social phobia.

Most studies on anxiety including social phobia have measured social adjustment behavior rather than quality of life (i.e. the subjective perception of the patient of his or her illness in relation to different domains). These social adjustment studies have found panic disorders to be more disabling than social phobia. However, quality of life was measured in terms of subjective well-being or satisfaction, and the Zürich study showed that patients with social phobia had less well-being in domains of friends, partner and childhood memories than patients with other anxiety or mood disorders. It

[Change in the diagnosis and therapy of anxiety disorders. 1: Phenomenology of anxiety and new approaches in the classification of anxiety disorders].

The pathological states anxiety neurosis and phobias, diagnostically classified under the neuroses, are, influenced by a recent American diagnostic classification, now designated anxiety disorders in clinical psychiatry. With this approach, which is more phenomenological than etiological in orientation, new diagnostic possibilities--among other things--have arisen. In the first place, an accurate differentiation of periodic and chronic states of anxiety can be made, while the clinical phenomena can be considered from various aspects, in order to evaluate simultaneously 1. the current clinical

Neuropsychological and psychiatric profiles in acute encephalitis in adults.

Acute encephalitis is an inflammation of brain tissue that can result from activity in the central nervous system (CNS) of a number of viruses. Although the neurological and psychiatric effects of encephalitis in the acute phase of the illness are well-known (Caroff, Mann, Gliatto, Sullivan, & Campbell, 2001), larger scale studies of the pattern of neuropsychological and psychiatric impairment following recovery from the acute inflammatory phase are less apparent. This paper reports the results of neuropsychological testing with a range of standardised cognitive measures in a case series of lo

Steroid Phobia: Is There a Basis? A Review of Topical Steroid Safety, Addiction and Withdrawal.

There is a growing concern amongst patients about topical corticosteroid (TCS) side effects, with increasing discussion of topical steroid addiction (TSA) and topical steroid withdrawal (TSW) particularly on social media platforms. However, the acceptance of TSA/TSW as a distinct condition remains controversial within the dermatological community. We conducted a literature search using PubMed, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, Embase and Web of Science to identify original articles addressing TSA/TSW. We described the definition and reported clinical features of TSA/TSW including its

Fear of pain and pain intensity: Meta-analysis and systematic review.

The fear avoidance model (FAM) represents a cognitive-behavioral explanatory approach for pain chronification. The core assumption is that fear of pain (FOP) following an acute pain experience facilitates the development of pain chronification, disability, and receding functionality. Thus, the model predicts a positive association between FOP and pain intensity in pain patients, which was frequently investigated; however, results were inconsistent. To highlight inconsistencies, we performed integrative statistical analysis aimed at evaluating the strength of the cross-sectional relation betwee

[The clinical characteristics of psychogenias in dental practice].

A total of 90 stomatological patients were subjected to clinico-psychopathological examinations. Of these, 70 were therapeutic and 20 orthodontic ones. The functional stomatological diseases in the form of stomatalgias were revealed in all the patients suffering from neurasthenia, neurotic depression, neurotic development of the personality as well as from psychopathy decompensation. The hypochondriac syndrome was marked by senestopathic and algesic disorders and in some cases, by anxious-phobic disturbances. Associated stomatalgias and neurotic symptomatology resulted in the lingering course

The medical student as behavioural psychotherapist.

A group of medical students were randomly selected from a larger group to carry out behaviour therapy under supervision. Ten patients with phobic disorders and two with obsessive-compulsive neurosis were treated, and the results, assessed by ratings of proved reliability, compared favourably with other studies in which psychiatrists or nurses acted as therapists. A questionnaire survey showed that students involved in therapy had a more favourable opinion about this kind of treatment than those receiving only theoretical instruction. The results suggested not only that medical students make go…

[Obsessive doubts by contrast].

Obsessive doubts by contrast, along with traditional obsessions, refer to a kind of obsessive states, for which contrast content presentations provide a basis for obsession appearance accompanied by irresistible drive for walking off a psychogenic situation. Obsessive doubts by contrast are formed due to a conflict between equally attractive but incompatible wishes. The content of contrast throught is not absurd but reflects a real traumatizing situation. A study of 28 patients revealed they have psychasthenic accentuation as a personal feature in common. Obsessive doubts by contrast may devel

Adrenal secretion and major depression in 8- to 16-year-olds, II. Influence of co-morbidity at presentation.

The association between high evening cortisol and low morning DHEA and the pattern of co-morbid diagnoses in 82 cases of major depressive disorder in 8- to 16-year-olds has been analysed. There was a significant association between the presence of high evening cortisol and co-morbid dysthymia. This was independent of age or sex. No positive association was found between the presence of low morning DHEA and any co-morbid diagnosis. However, co-morbid panic or phobic disorder was significantly associated with the absence of this endocrine abnormality. These findings suggest that specific endocri

[Adjustment disorders in children, first hospitalized for hematological malignancies].

OBJECTIVE: In the structure of oncological diseases of childhood, blood diseases occupy a leading position (40%). According to some researchers, the prevalence of mental disorders among patients with oncohematological pathology is very high, regardless of the age of patients. The aim of this work was to identify clinical/dynamic and typological characteristics of mental disorders in children with hematological malignancies as well as the factors predisposing to these disorders. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study involved 96 children (63 boys and 33 girls), aged 3-12 years, with hematological mal

[The psychogenic factor in the clinical picture of epilepsy].

A study of 300 epileptic patients depicted that the first seizures in 8% of all cases appear following psychic shock traumas. Epileptic fits, unlike hysterical, appear more frequently not during the crucial phase of emotions, but after several hours or days of a psychic traumatization. The psychogenic factor as a rule is not reflected in the psychopathological structure of the disease. In the process of the disease the psychogenic influence leads to different neurotic conditions (depressive, asthenical, hysterical, phobic) which complicate the psychopathological picture of epilepsy. The epilep

Herbal medicines in the treatment of psychiatric disorders: 10-year updated review.

This paper provides a 10-year update of the 2007 systematic review of herbal medicines studied in a broad range of psychiatric disorders, including depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, seasonal affective, bipolar, psychotic, phobic, somatoform, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorders. Ovid Medline, PubMed, and the Cochrane Library were searched for herbal medicines with both pharmacological and clinical evidence of psychotropic activity. This updated review now covers clinical trial evidence for 24 herbal medicines in 11 psychiatric disorders. High-quality evidence was found to exi
