Previous research has shown that plant diversity influences N and P cycles. However, the effect of plant diversity on complete ecosystem N and P budgets has not yet been assessed. For 20 plots of artificially established grassland mixtures differing in plant diversity, we determined N and P inputs by bulk and dry deposition and N and P losses by mowing (and subsequent removal of the biomass) and leaching from April 2003 to March 2004. Total and inorganic soil P were extracted from a coastal salt marsh in SE Spain receiving eutrophicated water of urban and agricultural origin. The greatest P contents were obtained within the upper 10 cm of soil of those sectors of the salt marsh most affected by urban waste water effluents. Most of the P was extracted using HCl, indicating that it is mainly bonded to Ca compounds. Only in sites with low CaCO(3) content was the quantity of P associated with Fe and Al oxides and hydroxides (extracted with NaOH) noticeable.

The combination hypophosphorous acid/triethylamine/AIBN led to fast, efficient, and smooth formation of the alkane. Reduction with diethyl phosphite was sufficiently slow to permit sequential intermolecular addition of a 2-oxoalkyl xanthate onto an olefin followed by cleavage of the newly formed carbon-sulfur bond.

As part of an effort to understand extensive, white phosphorus (P4)-induced waterfowl mortality at Eagle River Flats, Fort Richardson, Alaska (USA), we conducted a number of acute toxicity tests using penned mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) in 1993 and 1994. A twenty-four year old patient showed severe hypophosphataemia after emergency surgery for colectasia. A critical study of the case isolated the factors which had favoured the development of this metabolic complication. The necessity for great care in the nutrition of emaciated patients as well as that of a phosphorus supply adapted to the metabolic status of the patient were emphasized. Frequent measurement of serum phosphate was recommended for patients undergoing intravenous hyperalimentation.

Quantitative analysis of urinary cyclic AMP in phospho-calcic pathology. The authors describe a method measuring amounts of cyclic AMP. Normal daily elimination in urine was measured in a group of normal subjects.
