Precise control of neural activity using dynamically optimized electrical stimulation.

Neural implants have the potential to restore lost sensory function by electrically evoking the complex naturalistic activity patterns of neural populations. However, it can be difficult to predict and control evoked neural responses to simultaneous multi-electrode stimulation due to nonlinearity of the responses. We present a solution to this problem and demonstrate its utility in the context of a bidirectional retinal implant for restoring vision. A dynamically optimized stimulation approach encodes incoming visual stimuli into a rapid, greedily chosen, temporally dithered and spatially mult

For a minute there, I lost myself … dosage dependent increases in mind wandering via prefrontal tDCS.

Allowing our mind's eye to wander to task unrelated thoughts can impact productivity and, in many everyday settings, safety. However, the drifting of our thoughts from our current task(s)/situation to others is undeniably a common occurrence and has even been associated with adaptive outcomes in terms of creativity. Previous researchers have used non-invasive transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), applied to the prefrontal cortex, to modulate mind wandering occurrences. However, little is known about the influence of varying stimulation parameters, such as polarity and intensity, on m

Exposure to a specific prompt topography predicts its relative efficiency when teaching intraverbal behavior to children with autism spectrum disorder.

Comparisons of the relative efficiency of different prompt topographies (visual or auditory), when teaching intraverbal behavior to children with disabilities, have yielded idiosyncratic results. Recent research has shown that previous exposure to a specific prompt type may affect its efficiency when teaching intraverbal behavior to preschool children. The current study was an attempt to replicate these results with 3 children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. For all participants, increased exposure to one prompt topography was sufficient to make it relatively more efficient as measure

The effect of face patch microstimulation on perception of faces and objects.

What is the range of stimuli encoded by face-selective regions of the brain? We asked how electrical microstimulation of face patches in macaque inferotemporal cortex affects perception of faces and objects. We found that microstimulation strongly distorted face percepts and that this effect depended on precise targeting to the center of face patches. While microstimulation had no effect on the percept of many non-face objects, it did affect the percept of some, including non-face objects whose shape is consistent with a face (for example, apples) as well as somewhat facelike abstract images (

Sharing social touch in the primary somatosensory cortex.

Touch has an emotional and communicative meaning, and it plays a crucial role in social perception and empathy. The intuitive link between others' somatosensations and our sense of touch becomes ostensible in mirror-touch synesthesia, a condition in which the view of a touch on another person's body elicits conscious tactile sensations on the observer's own body [1]. This peculiar phenomenon may implicate normal social mirror mechanisms [2]. Here, we show that mirror-touch interference effects, synesthesia-like sensations, and even phantom touches can be induced in nonsynesthetes by priming th

Modulation of cortical excitability can speed up blindsight but not improve it.

Blindsight has been widely investigated and its properties documented. One property still debated and contested is the puzzling absence of phenomenal visual percepts of visual stimuli that can be detected with perfect accuracy. We investigated the possibility that phenomenal visual percepts of exogenous visual stimuli in patient GY might be induced by using transcranial direct current stimulation. High contrast and low contrast stimuli were presented as a moving grating in his blind hemifield. When left area MT/V5 was anodally stimulated during the presentation of high-contrast gratings, he ne

Sound support: intermodal information facilitates infants' perception of an occluded trajectory.

In a visual occlusion task, 4-month-olds were given a dynamic sound cue (following the trajectory of an object), or a static cue (sound remained stationary). Infants' oculomotor anticipations were greater in the Dynamic condition, suggesting that representations of visual occlusion were supported by auditory information.

The sound of actions in apraxia.

Studies in nonhuman and human primates have demonstrated that sound-producing actions are mapped on the same mirror circuits that are activated during the visual recognition and execution of actions [1-12]. However, no causative link between the auditory recognition and execution of actions has been provided thus far. Here, we sought to determine whether patients with apraxia, who are by definition impaired in performing specific gestures, are also impaired in recognizing sounds specifically linked to human actions. Twenty-eight left-hemisphere-damaged patients with or without limb and/or bucc

The spread of attention across modalities and space in a multisensory object.

Attending to a stimulus is known to enhance the neural responses to that stimulus. Recent experiments on visual attention have shown that this modulation can have object-based characteristics, such that, when certain parts of a visual object are attended, other parts automatically also receive enhanced processing. Here, we investigated whether visual attention can modulate neural responses to other components of a multisensory object defined by synchronous, but spatially disparate, auditory and visual stimuli. The audiovisual integration of such multisensory stimuli typically leads to mislocal

Attention-dependent suppression of distracter visual input can be cross-modally cued as indexed by anticipatory parieto-occipital alpha-band oscillations.

Recent studies show that in addition to enhancing neural processing for attentionally relevant stimuli, selective attention also operates by suppressing the processing of distracter stimuli. When subjects are pre-cued to selectively deploy attention during voluntary (endogenous) attentional tasks, these mechanisms can be set up in advance of actual stimulus processing. That is, the brain can be placed in a biased attentional state. Two recent cueing studies have provided evidence for the deployment of such biased attentional states [J.J. Foxe, G.V. Simpson, S.P. [Distribution in normal subjects of performance in Token test: a basic study for the diagnosis of learning disabilities].

For the diagnosis of specific reading disorder (SRD) we studied the distribution in 187 elementary school children of the scores of Token test. Token test was performed under two conditions: listening and reading by presenting the same sentences. The diagnosis required a normal score under the listening condition, an abnormally low score under the reading condition and significantly large discrepancy between them. This test is valid and convenient for the diagnosis of SRD.

Stimulus induced behaviours in Tourette's syndrome.

Three cases of Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (GTS) who experienced different tic related behaviours in response to both external and internal stimuli are described. Such behaviours might represent sensory tics, reflex motor tics, exaggerated startle responses, or obsessive compulsive behaviours. It is suggested that there is a continuum of stimulus induced behaviours, and that, in some cases, separations into individual descriptive entities may be difficult. There also seems to be a continuum between internal and external phenomena that induce the behaviours. Implications for the relation b

[The spontaneous and evoked neuronal activity of the parietal associative cortex in cats during motion sickness].

In the experiments with the cats a spontaneous and induced activity of the neurons (57) of parietal associated cortex during motion sickness was studied. It was found that after a 15 min motion sickness 54 percent of the examined neurons displayed suppression, 20 percent of neurons did an increase of spontaneous activity. Twenty-six percent of neurons did not respond to motion sickness. The dynamics of induced neuronal responses under motion sickness effect was complex, a direction of the changes in induced responses frequently did not agree with that of alterations in a spontaneous cellular a

Distraction by deviant sounds: Response repetition vs. response change.

In oddball paradigms, rare deviant stimuli reliably produce behavioral distraction, disrupting performance in ongoing primary tasks. However, the specific mechanisms through which deviance affects response selection and execution remain unclear. Recent evidence suggests that deviant sounds may differentially affect response repetitions and response changes, but whether these effects reflect a single underlying process or functionally independent mechanisms has not been established. We investigated this question using a cross-modal auditory-visual oddball task in which participants (N = 115) id

Inverted encoding of neural responses to audiovisual stimuli reveals super-additive multisensory enhancement.

A central challenge for the brain is how to combine separate sources of information from different sensory modalities to optimally represent objects and events in the external world, such as combining someone's speech and lip movements to better understand them in a noisy environment. At the level of individual neurons, audiovisual stimuli often elicit super-additive interactions, where the neural response is greater than the sum of auditory and visual responses. However, investigations using electroencephalography (EEG) to record brain activity have revealed inconsistent interactions, with st

Directed attention influences optimality of top-down and bottom-up multi-modal perceptual integration.

Multimodal sensory integration is a ubiquitous neural process that can be modeled as optimal cue combination, incorporating both top-down, attention-like signals and bottom-up evidence that impact the precision of response variables. Accordingly, reducing attention or adding noise to one modality is expected to decrease proportionally its contribution while increasing that of the other modality. We tested this prediction using a gender-comparison task employing stimuli for which the face and voice were independently morphed between average male and female exemplars. Top-down influences were ma

Revisiting perceptual sensitivity to non-native speech in a diverse sample of bilinguals.

Werker and Tees (1984) prompted decades of research attempting to detail the paths infants take towards specialisation for the sounds of their native language(s). Most of this research has examined the trajectories of monolingual children. However, it has also been proposed that bilinguals, who are exposed to greater phonetic variability than monolinguals and must learn the rules of two languages, may remain perceptually open to non-native language sounds later into life than monolinguals. Using a visual habituation paradigm, the current study tests this question by comparing 15- to 18-month-o

The Development of Cortical Responses to the Integration of Audiovisual Speech in Infancy.

In adults, the integration of audiovisual speech elicits specific higher (super-additive) or lower (sub-additive) cortical responses when compared to the responses to unisensory stimuli. Although there is evidence that the fronto-temporal network is active during perception of audiovisual speech in infancy, the development of fronto-temporal responses to audiovisual integration remains unknown. In the current study, 5-month-olds and 10-month-olds watched bimodal (audiovisual) and alternating unimodal (auditory + visual) syllables. In this context we use alternating unimodal to denote alternati

Socially meaningful visual context either enhances or inhibits vocalisation processing in the macaque brain.

Social interactions rely on the interpretation of semantic and emotional information, often from multiple sensory modalities. Nonhuman primates send and receive auditory and visual communicative signals. However, the neural mechanisms underlying the association of visual and auditory information based on their common social meaning are unknown. Using heart rate estimates and functional neuroimaging, we show that in the lateral and superior temporal sulcus of the macaque monkey, neural responses are enhanced in response to species-specific vocalisations paired with a matching visual context, or

Reduced multisensory facilitation exists at different periods of development in autism.

Atypical sensory processing is now recognised as a key component of an autism diagnosis. The integration of multiple sensory inputs (multisensory integration (MSI)) is thought to be idiosyncratic in autistic individuals and may have cascading effects on the development of higher-level skills such as social communication. Multisensory facilitation was assessed using a target detection paradigm in 45 autistic and 111 neurotypical individuals, matched on age and IQ. Target stimuli were: auditory (A; 3500 Hz tone), visual (V; white disk 'flash') or audiovisual (AV; simultaneous tone and flash), an
