Identifying sex-specific injury predictors as a key factor in maintaining optimal physical activity levels.

BACKGROUND: Optimal physical activity is known to reduce cardiovascular, respiratory and endocrine system diseases and, as a consequence, improve quality of life. An important risk factor for reinjuries during normal exercise is the initial connective tissue pathology. The variety of clinical dysplastic manifestations significantly complicate the timely diagnosis of this comorbidity. AIM: To establish pathognomonic sex-specific dysplasia phenotypes that indicate a particular sensitivity to physical exertion. METHODS: The study involved 117 participants with recurrent musculoskeletal injuries…

Perceived effort of walking: relationship with gait, physical function and activity, fear of falling, and confidence in walking in older adults with mobility limitations.

BACKGROUND: Although clinicians have a number of measures to use to describe walking performance, few, if any, of the measures capture a person's perceived effort in walking. Perceived effort of walking may be a factor in what a person does versus what he or she is able to do. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to examine the relationship of perceived effort of walking with gait, function, activity, fear of falling, and confidence in walking in older adults with mobility limitations. Design This investigation was a cross-sectional, descriptive, relational study. METHODS: The study to

Comparative Effects of Repeated Linear Sprint and Change-of-Direction Speed Training on Performance, Perceived Exertion and Enjoyment in Youth Soccer Players.

Youth soccer requires an integrated approach combining technical-tactical, physical, and psychological components to enhance performance and long-term engagement. Although Repeated Linear Sprint Training (LRST) and Repeated Change of Direction Speed (RCOD) training are widely used to improve fitness, direct comparisons of their effects on physical performance and perceptual responses in adolescent players remain limited. This study compared the effects of an 8-week LRST versus RCOD training program on physical performance, perceived exertion, and enjoyment in youth soccer players. Twenty-six m

Acute Effects of Nutritional and Physical Recovery Strategies on Exercise Performance, Muscle Damage, and Fatigue in Elite Basketball Players: A Pilot Randomized Crossover Trial.

BACKGROUND: Due to the congested competition calendar and the high physical demands of elite basketball, the selection of effective recovery strategies is essential to optimize performance and reduce exercise-induced fatigue and muscle damage. This pilot study aimed to examine the acute effects of different nutritional and physical recovery strategies on exercise performance, muscle damage, and perceived fatigue and exertion in elite basketball players. METHODS: Fifteen elite male basketball players participated in this pilot randomized crossover trial and completed four recovery conditions:

Sport-specific experience modulates perceived exertion but not enjoyment or workload in recreational 3 × 3 basketball.

This study aimed to investigate the differences of previous basketball-specific experience on perceived exertion, enjoyment, physiological, and physical responses during recreational 3 × 3 basketball in active young adults. Twenty-four healthy male participants were divided into two groups: those with basketball experience (9.6 ± 4.5 years) and those with minimal or no experience (0.7 ± 0.9 years). All participants completed a 10-min recreational 3 × 3 basketball match following official FIBA rules. Heart rate responses were monitored using Polar H10 heart rate straps to determine the percenta

The Use of a Just Noticeable Difference Approach to Improve Perceptual Acuity Ability in Male Runners.

We were interested in micro-variations in an athlete's psychophysical state that separate peak exertion from physiological collapse. Thus, we measured perceptual acuity in runners using a classic psychophysical approach, the just noticeable difference (JND) on two standard stimuli runs at treadmill speed corresponding to 70%VO2max and 80%VO2max. Thirty-four male runners (M age = 35.26, SD = 7.33 years) first performed a maximal treadmill test to determine the speed of a standard exercise bout for the JND trials. The JND trials consisted of four 5-minute running bouts on a treadmill with 5-minu

Relationship between one-handed push force and subjective rating of force exertion.

BACKGROUND: Pushing is a typical workplace activity that may result in musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). A convenient method of assessing the risk of MSDs is to determine the association between the force applied and the subjective rating of force exertion. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the relationship between the subjective rating of force exertion and the force applied to both a fixed and a movable handle. It also aimed to confirm that the participants could apply a higher one-handed push force at shoulder height than at elbow height. METHODS: A one-handed pushing experiment w

[CME ECC 67: Arrhythmia on Exertion].

CME ECC 67: Arrhythmia on Exertion Abstract. Ventricular tachycardias are potentially life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias with a heart rate >100 beats/min, originating from the specific conduction system below the His or the ventricular myocardium. The morphology of the surface ECG can provide valid information about the underlying mechanism and the associated cardiac disorder. The according pathomechanism is of paramount importance for further management. This article is intended to provide an insight into the various causes and treatment options as well as the differential diagnosis of vent
