Hydroquinone has pharmacological uses in disorders of pigmentation because of its ability to competitively inhibit the enzyme tyrosinase. Our contemporary review presents the strongest evidence supporting the use of hydroquinone with the most effective and tolerable formulations combining hydroquinone, retinoid and corticosteroid (modified Kligman formula or 'triple combination cream'). The risk of exogenous ochronosis is low if prescribed concentrations of ≤ 5 for a limited period with regular monitoring. Dermatologists should reassure patients that with controlled use, hydroquinone can be we

While plaque-induced gingivitis is one of the most common human inflammatory diseases, several non-plaque-induced gingival diseases are less common but often of major significance for patients. The non-plaque-induced gingival lesions are often manifestations of systemic conditions, but they may also represent pathologic changes limited to gingival tissues. A classification is proposed, based on the etiology of the lesions and includes: Genetic/Developmental disorders; Specific infections; Inflammatory and immune conditions and lesions; Reactive processes; Neoplasms; Endocrine, Nutritional and

The 37th Annual David W. Smith Workshop on Malformations and Morphogenesis occurred on September 9th-14th, 2016 at the University of California-Los Angeles Conference Center in Lake Arrowhead, CA. The Workshop, which honors the legacy of David W. Smith, brought together clinicians and researchers interested in congenital malformations and their underlying mechanisms of morphogenesis. The Workshop highlighted five themes besides mechanisms of morphogenesis and New Syndromes: Neural Crestopathies, Mosaicism, Disorders of Skin Pigmentation, Therapies, and Ear Malformations and Hearing Loss. Behavioral inhibition, a temperamental trait signalling a predisposition to childhood and adolescent anxiety disorders, is slightly more frequent in America among Caucasian children having blue irises. This paper examines a community sample of 101 German toddlers assessed for behavioral inhibition in a standardized laboratory procedure. Hair pigmentation was found to be significantly associated with behavioral inhibition in the sense that blond children exhibited higher fear scores. As in American samples, blue-eyed children had a higher fear score than did other children, but this difference

Hyperpigmentation is a common disorder of the skin, particularly in brown-skinned patients. Melasma is a common cause of facial hyperpigmentation and can be resistant to treatment. A combination of topical creams and gels, chemical peels, and sunscreens may be necessary for significant improvement. Erythema dyschromicum perstans is a dermal pigmentation seen on the trunk and proximal extremities, most commonly presenting in dark-skinned Hispanics. Drug-induced and postinflammatory hyperpigmentation may last for many months after the offending drug or dermatitis has been eliminated. These disor

Endocrinologic disorders occasionally manifest themselves by cutaneous abnormalities. In some instances, these alterations are the most prominent complaints of the patient. It is then important that the physician is able to recognize them as the manifestation of the endocrinologic disease. In this review, we describe the main cutaneous lesions occurring in endocrinopathy, like troubles of the skin pigmentation [melasma, acanthosis nigricans, Addison's disease, Cushing's syndrome, vitiligo], generalized or pretibial myxedema, acne and androgen excess, hirsutism. Where known, we try to approach

There are familial forms in 1%-11% of all malignant melanomas. The familial type of malignant melanoma, however, is heterogeneous and not clearly defined. Three groups of familial malignant melanoma may be distinguished: malignant melanoma without additional skin disorders, melanoma associated with disturbances in the pigmentation system (including albinism, congenital nevi, and the dysplastic nevus syndrome), and malignant melanoma in other forms of genodermatosis. The most frequent variant of familial malignant melanoma is dysplastic nevus syndrome (a skin disease whose biologic and clinic i

OBJECTIVE: To establish a visual assessment scale for the severity of dark circles' pigmented and vascular type in Chinese women.
MATERIALS AND METHOD: A total of 269 healthy Chinese women from Shanghai with different degrees of dark circles', both pigmented and vascular types, were evaluated by visual assessment. Photographs of their dark circles were analyzed by image analysis.
RESULTS: The visual assessment evaluation on classification and severity showed a favorable agreement between the successive measured results. Significant differences from very slight to severe dark circles for pigm

Pigmented lesions of the nail unit are commonly encountered in the clinical setting. Yet, they often present a unique challenge to clinicians because of a broad differential diagnosis or unfamiliarity with clinical and histopathologic features. A wide variety of causes exist ranging from benign lesions such as subungual hemorrhage to malignant lesions such as subungual melanoma. Identifying the underlying cause is key to appropriate management and follow-up in these patients. Although emerging clinical tools such as dermoscopy can be very useful in evaluation of these lesions, histopathologic

The use of noninvasive imaging techniques to evaluate different types of skin lesions is increasing popular. In vivo confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) is a new method for high resolution non-invasive imaging of intact skin in situ and in vivo. Although many studies have investigated melanin-containing cells in lesions by in vivo CLSM, few studies have systematically characterized melanin-containing cells based on their morphology, size, arrangement, density, borders, and brightness. In this study, the characteristics of melanin-containing cells were further investigated by in vivo CLSM

Besides the inherited forms of mottled and reticulate pigmentation, a vast number of diseases and trigger mechanisms can lead to acquired pigmentation of the neck. Nonhereditary variants of reticulate and mottled pigmentation can affect the neck as a typical site and therefore may give a diagnostic clue or it can occur sporadically on the neck as well as on other sites. A well-known and important factor in the pathogenesis is exposure to sunlight. Sun-induced pigmentation often presents on the neck and may result from phototoxic, photoallergic and cumulative actinic damage. Frequent forms comp
