Speaking in Tones: The role of lexical tones in Chinese-speaking Primary Progressive Aphasia.

UNLABELLED: Two-thirds of the world's languages, including Mandarin and Cantonese, employ pitch variation to convey meaning (lexical tone). Existing diagnostic frameworks for primary progressive aphasia (PPA) have been developed for English speakers, and have not considered the impact of salient language-specific variations, such as tone. This study investigates lexical tone processing in Mandarin- and Cantonese-speaking individuals with PPA and examines their neural signatures using structural neuroimaging. METHODS: Seventy-eight native Chinese speakers (54 with PPA; 24 healthy controls) wer

Auditory training program in subjects with tinnitus.

UNLABELLED: Tinnitus may be defined as the conscious perception of sound or noise, without the presence of external acoustic stimulation. Given the damage caused by tinnitus and the lack of effective treatment, alternatives are necessary to rehabilitate subjects with tinnitus. There is an assumption that auditory training (AT) could lead to a plastic reorganization of this system, thus promoting an improvement of the symptom. OBJECTIVE: To verify the effect of an AT program in subjects with tinnitus in the perception of this symptom. METHODS: Twelve subjects with tinnitus were included in th

Auditory motion perception activates visual motion areas in early blind subjects.

We have previously shown that some visual motion areas can be specifically recruited by auditory motion processing in blindfolded sighted subjects [Poirier, C., Collignon, O., De Volder, A.G., Renier, L., Vanlierde, A., Tranduy, D., Scheiber, C., 2005. Specific activation of V5 brain area by auditory motion processing: an fMRI study. Brain Res. Cogn. Brain Res. 25, 650-658]. The present fMRI study investigated whether auditory motion processing may recruit the same brain areas in early blind subjects. The task consisted of simultaneously determining both the nature of a sound stimulus (pure to

A contribution to the debate on tinnitus definition.

Tinnitus is generally defined as an auditory perception in the absence of environmental sound stimulation. However, this definition is quite incomplete as it omits an essential aspect, the patient's point of view. This point of view constitutes, first and foremost, a global and unified lived experience, which is not only sensory (localization, loudness, pitch and tone), but also cognitive (thoughts, attentiveness, behaviors) and emotional (discomfort, suffering). This experience can be lived in a very unpleasant way and consequently have a very negative impact on quality of life. This article

[Experience with electrostimulation of the acoustic nerve before cochlea implantation].

The electrical stimulation of the acoustic nerve plays an essential role in the selection of patients for cochlea implantation. The performance of a deaf ear under the conditions of electrical stimulation can be assessed by means of the pre-operative promontory test using a transtympanic needle electrode. Five components of this test were applied to 48 patients: the determination of perception threshold and upper comfortable level for pulse and burst stimulation, the pitch test, the temporal difference test and the gap detection test. The mean values emerging from these examinations may be use

Effects of noise exposure on young adults with normal audiograms II: Behavioral measures.

An estimate of lifetime noise exposure was used as the primary predictor of performance on a range of behavioral tasks: frequency and intensity difference limens, amplitude modulation detection, interaural phase discrimination, the digit triplet speech test, the co-ordinate response speech measure, an auditory localization task, a musical consonance task and a subjective report of hearing ability. One hundred and thirty-eight participants (81 females) aged 18-36 years were tested, with a wide range of self-reported noise exposure. All had normal pure-tone audiograms up to 8 kHz. It was predict

On the accuracy of adults' auditory perception of normophonic and dysphonic children's personality.

We investigated the accuracy of auditory inferences of personality of Belgian children with vocal fold nodules (VFN). External judges (n = 57) were asked to infer the personality of normophonic (NP) children and children with VFN (n = 10) on the basis of vowels and sentences. The auditory inferred profiles were compared to the actual personality of NP and VFN children. Positive and partly accurate inferences of VFN children's personality were made on the basis of connected speech, while sustained vowels yielded negative and inaccurate inferences of personality traits of children with VFN. Dysp

A nonmusician with severe Alzheimer's dementia learns a new song.

The hallmark symptom of Alzheimer's Dementia (AD) is impaired memory, but memory for familiar music can be preserved. We explored whether a non-musician with severe AD could learn a new song. A 91 year old woman (NC) with severe AD was taught an unfamiliar song. We assessed her delayed song recall (24 hours and 2 weeks), music cognition, two word recall (presented within a familiar song lyric, a famous proverb, or as a word stem completion task), and lyrics and proverb completion. NC's music cognition (pitch and rhythm perception, recognition of familiar music, completion of lyrics) was relati

Feasibility study of a game integrating assessment and therapy of tinnitus.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus, head and ear noise, is due to maladaptive plastic changes in auditory and associated neural networks. Tinnitus has been traditionally managed through the use of sound to passively mask or facilitate habituation to tinnitus, a process that may take 6-12 months. NEW METHOD: A game-based perceptual training method, requiring localisation and selective attention to sounds, was developed and customised to the individual's tinnitus perception. Eight participants tested the games usability at home. RESULTS: Each participant successfully completed 30 min of training, for 20 day

A computational model to predict changes in breathiness resulting from variations in aspiration noise level.

Perception of breathy voice quality is cued by a number of acoustic changes including an increase in aspiration noise level (AH) and spectral slope. Changes in AH in a vowel may be evaluated through measures such as the harmonic-to-noise ratio, cepstral peak prominence (CPP), or via auditory measures such as the partial loudness of harmonic energy and loudness of aspiration noise. Although a number of experiments have reported high correlation between such measures and ratings of perceived breathiness, a formal model to predict breathiness of a vowel has not been proposed. This research descri

Repetition suppression in auditory-motor regions to pitch and temporal structure in music.

Music performance requires control of two sequential structures: the ordering of pitches and the temporal intervals between successive pitches. Whether pitch and temporal structures are processed as separate or integrated features remains unclear. A repetition suppression paradigm compared neural and behavioral correlates of mapping pitch sequences and temporal sequences to motor movements in music performance. Fourteen pianists listened to and performed novel melodies on an MR-compatible piano keyboard during fMRI scanning. The pitch or temporal patterns in the melodies either changed or repe

A computational model of the auditory periphery for speech and hearing research. II. Descending paths.

The auditory model described in Giguère and Woodland [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 94, 331-342 (1993)] is applied to the simulation of the descending paths to the peripheral ear. An external feedback unit regulates the average firing rate of inner hair cell afferent fibers via a simplified modeling of the dynamics of the acoustic reflex to the middle ear and of the slow efferent innervation of the outer hair cells. The terminal effector of the acoustic reflex system is the stapedial muscle which stiffens the middle ear and reduces vibration of the stapes up to 15 dB below 1000 Hz. The control function

Quantifying the Impact of Headlamp Light Distribution on Automotive Camera Perception: Establishing a New Primary Design Parameter.

Perception-oriented evaluation of automotive headlamps still relies mainly on human-vision photometric criteria, although forward-facing cameras are increasingly safety-critical sensing elements for night driving. This paper benchmarks 16 measured production headlamp light distributions with a simulation chain that combines headlamp spectra and beam patterns, diffuse scene reflection, an imaging-transfer model, and an EMVA-based camera model. The quantitative chain maps scene radiance to sensor-domain signal-to-noise ratio, derives task-specific required signal-to-noise curves from a six-netwo

[Reducing tinnitus intensity : Pilot study to attenuate tonal tinnitus using individually spectrally optimized near-threshold noise].

BACKGROUND: Around 15% of the general population is affected by tinnitus, but no real cure exists despite intensive research. Based on our recent causal model for tinnitus development, we here test a new treatment aimed at counteracting the perception. This treatment is based on the stochastic resonance phenomenon at specific auditory system synapses that is induced by externally presented near-threshold noise. OBJECTIVE: This pilot study will investigate whether individually spectrally adapted noise can successfully reduce chronic tonal/narrow-band tinnitus during stimulation. MATERIALS AND

What colour does that feel? Tactile--visual mapping and the development of cross-modality.

Humans share implicit preferences for cross-modal mappings (e.g., low pitch sounds are preferentially paired with darker colours). Individuals with synaesthesia experience cross-modal mappings to a conscious degree (e.g., they may see colours when they hear sounds). The neonatal synaesthesia hypothesis claims that all humans may be born with this explicit cross-modal perception, which dies out in most people through childhood, leaving only implicit associations in the average adult. Although there is evidence for decreasing cross-modality throughout early infancy, it is unclear whether this de

Vestibulo-cerebellar disease impairs the central representation of self-orientation.

Transformation of head-fixed otolith signals into a space-fixed frame of reference is essential for perception of self-orientation and ocular motor control. In monkeys the nodulus and ventral uvula of the vestibulo-cerebellum facilitate this transformation by computing an internal estimate of direction of gravity. These experimental findings motivated the hypothesis that degeneration of the vestibulo-cerebellum in humans alter perceptual and ocular motor functions that rely on accurate estimates of gravity, such as subjective visual vertical (SVV), static ocular counterroll (OCR), and gravity-

Multimodal motion processing in area V5/MT: evidence from an artificial class of audio-visual events.

Audio-visual integration in the human brain influences perception and precision of motor tasks. We tested audio-visual integration during height estimation when presenting video clips of counter movement jumps (CMJ), using sparse sampling fMRI at 3T. Employing the technique of "sonification", we created artificial auditory-visual motion events by transforming the ground reaction force of the CMJs into the auditory domain, modulating frequency and amplitude of the standard pitch "A" (440 Hz). We combined these "sonificated" movements with either concordant or discordant visual movement displays

Different time courses of maturation for learning and generalization following auditory training in children.

OBJECTIVE: We recently demonstrated that learning abilities among school-age children vary following frequency discrimination (FD) training, with some exhibiting mature adult-like learning while others performing poorly (non-adult-like learners). This study tested the hypothesis that children's post-training generalisation is related to their learning maturity. Additionally, it investigated how training duration influences children's generalisation, considering the observed decrease with increased training in adults. DESIGN: Generalisation to the untrained ear and untrained 2000 Hz frequency

The effect of stimulus context on pitch representations in the human auditory cortex.

Neuroimaging studies of pitch coding seek to identify pitch-related responses separate from responses to other properties of the stimulus, such as its energy onset, and other general aspects of the listening context. The current study reports the first attempt to evaluate these modulatory influences using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) measures of cortical pitch representations. Stimulus context was manipulated using a 'classical stimulation paradigm' (whereby successive pitch stimuli were separated by gaps of silence) and a 'continuous stimulation paradigm' (whereby successive p
