Plasma cell granuloma is a kind of the disease with low incidence at head and neck, which is a benign lesions with malignant biological performance. The diagnosis of plasma cell granuloma is difficult as the symptom is not typical and it is difficult to distinguish with cancers and other diseases through the physical sign and imaging manifestation. The golden standard of diagnosis is histopathological examination. The therapy of plasma cell granuloma is still controversial, but the first choice is the operation. The other therapy such as hormone therapy, radiotherapy, chemotherapy etc., should

Inflammatory myofibroblastic pseudotumor (plasma cell granuloma) is a soft tissue lesion consisting of myofibroblasts, mature lymphocytes, histiocytes, plasma cells, eosinophils, and extracellular collagen. Various sites in the body may harbor these lesions. Lungs, omentum, intestines, mesentery, and urinary system are the most susceptible areas. It is usually seen in children and young adults. The lesion is rarely detected in the head and neck region. The orbit and the upper respiratory system are the most common localizations in the head and neck region. Sinonasal tract is a rare site of inv…

Normal and reactive plasma cells (PC) are easy to ascertain on human bone marrow films, due to their small mature-appearing nucleus and large cytoplasm, the latter usually deep blue after Giemsa staining. Cytoplasm is filled with long strands of rough endoplasmic reticulum and one large Golgi apparatus (paranuclear hof), demonstrating that PC are dedicated mainly to protein synthesis and excretion (immunoglobulin). Deregulation of the genome may induce clonal expansion of one PC that will lead to immunoglobulin overproduction and eventually to one among the so-called PC neoplasms. In multiple …

Primary Plasma cell leukaemia (pPCL) is a rare plasma cell (PC) malignancy. The strict criteria for the diagnosis is an absolute PC number greater 2 × 10(9)/L or a plasmocytosis accounting for > 20% of the differential white cell count that does not arise from a pre-existing multiple myeloma. pPCL was associated with aggressive clinic-biological features. Primary Plasma cell leukaemia is more characterised by an extra medullar involvement such as hepatomegaly, splenomegaly, lymphadenopathy, lepto-meningeal infiltration or extramedullary plasmocytomas. The prognosis of pPCL is very poor. We rep

BACKGROUND: Plasma cell dyscrasias (PCDs) refer to a spectrum of disorders characterized by the monoclonal proliferation of lymphoplasmacytic cells in the bone marrow and, sometimes, tissue deposition of monoclonal immunoglobulins or their components. These disorders include multiple myeloma (MM) and Waldenström's macroglobulinemia, as well as rare conditions such as light-chain deposition disease (LCDD) and heavy-chain diseases (HCDs). The worldwide annual incidence of MM is estimated at 86,000, which is approximately 0.8% of all new cancer cases.
PURPOSE: Our retrospective study aims to hig

Waldenström's macroglobulinemia is a B-cell neoplasm characterized by infiltration of the bone marrow by a lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate and an IgM monoclonal gammopathy. It is an uncommon disease with overall incidence of approximately 3 per million persons per year, accounting for approximately 1% to 2% of all hematologic cancers. It has only one-sixth the estimated prevalence of plasma cell myeloma. Disease symptoms can be due to infiltration of bone marrow and other tissue sites by malignant lymphoplasmacytic cells or due to the effects of elevated serum IgM levels. However, patients may pr

Plasma cell balanitis (PCB), also knows as Zoon balanitis, is a benign asymptomatic but chronic and erosive inflammatory condition of the gl … fibrotic stroma with numerous blood vessels and a mixed inflammatory infiltrate including scattered plasma cells. It is important to differentiate PCB from a syphilitic chancre in a patient presenting with a nonhealing penile lesion. This case report demonstrates that these entities may be seen in the same patient at different times.

Deletion of the long arm of chromosome 20 (del 20q) has been observed in patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) or myeloid malignancies. We experienced an MDS female case of del 20q accompanied by clusters of plasmacytic cells in bone marrow. Her bone marrow cells showed morphological abnormalities in three lineages and the chromosomal abnormality of 46, XX, del (20) (q11.2q13.3). Although the percentage of plasma cells was low in free cells, such cells showed nuclear abnormalities. In bone marrow clots, we also observed clusters of anti-CD38 and anti-CD138 antibody-positive cells. Accor…

The effect of low and high viscosity hemodilution with plasma expanders on the extent of the cell free layer (CFL) width was analyzed in the microcirculation of the exteriorized cremaster muscle preparation of Sprague-Dawley male rats. Anesthetized animals were subjected to 40% hemodilution by blood volume, using 5% human serum albumin (HSA) or 6% Hetastarch (hydroxyethyl starch 670 kDa). Arterioles (n=5 for each treatment) were investigated. Mean arterial pressure, heart rate, vessel flow velocity and CFL width were measured at baseline and 5, 20 and 40 min post-exchange transfusion. The aim of this prospective study was to define the flow cytometric characteristics of simultaneously investigated bone marrow and peripheral blood plasma cells antigens expression in 36 plasma cell leukemia (PCL) patients. The immunophenotypic profile of plasma cells was determined with a panel of monoclonal antibodies. The antigen expression intensity was calculated as relative fluorescence intensity (RFI). Bone marrow plasma cells showed expression of particular antigens in the following proportion of cases: CD49d 100%, CD29 94%, CD54 93%, CD44 83%, CD56 60%, CD18 26%, CD11b 29%, CD11a 19%,…

Presented is a retrospective analysis of 27 patients with plasma cell neoplasms of the spine treated by surgery. Multiple myeloma was confirmed in 22 (81%) and solitary plasmacytoma in 5 patients (19%), assessed at the time of surgery. Nineteen patients (70%) with the preliminary diagnosis of malignancy of unknown etiology were admitted for surgery. In 23 patients (85%) the essential symptom was back pain, which preceded surgery by an average of 4 months. Thirteen patients (48%) were bedridden due to tumor spinal cord compression, on average for 7 days before undergoing surgery. Only 5 out of

Eccrine syringofibroadenoma (ESFA) is a rare, benign, adnexal neoplasm thought to be eccrine ductal differentiation displaying variable clinical findings and characteristic histological features. It usually occurs as a solitary nodule on the extremities of an elderly person. Histological findings typically show a proliferation of anastomosing strands, cords, and columns of monomorphous epithelial cells that harbor eccrine duct formations embedded in a fibrovascular stroma. Acrosyringial nevus, though usually regarded as an identical lesion, is sometimes regarded as a different entity showing p

Systemic mastocytosis (SM) comprises a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by infiltration of bone marrow and other tissues by neoplastic mast cells. A subset of patients with SM has associated hematologic malignancy usually of myeloid origin and comprises an entity termed systemic mastocytosis with associated clonal hematological non-mast cell lineage disease (SM-AHNMD) by the current WHO classification. Reports of clonal lymphoid malignancies associated with SM are rare. We describe a patient who was simultaneously diagnosed with indolent SM and a plasma cell dyscrasia fitting the

Plasma cell dyscrasias are a group of clinically and biochemically diverse disorders of unknown etiology, characterized by the disproportionate proliferation of one or more clones of B cells, and the presence of a structurally and electrophoretically homogeneous (monoclonal) immunoglobulin or polypeptide subunit in serum or urine. The role of splenectomy in the management of plasma cell dyscrasias has not been well defined. Using MEDLINE, the authors searched the English-language published literature from the year 1970 through September 2005 to determine the indications for splenectomy in plas
