Complications following cranioplasty and relationship to timing: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The optimal timing of cranioplasty after decompressive craniectomy has not been well established. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between timing of cranioplasty and related complications. A systematic search of MEDLINE, Scopus, and the Cochrane databases was performed using PRISMA guidelines for English-language articles published between 1990 and 2015. Case series, case-control and cohort studies, and clinical trials reporting timing and complication data for cranioplasty after decompressive craniectomy in adults were included. Extracted data included overall compli

Craniofacial reconstruction using rational cubic ball curves.

This paper proposes the reconstruction of craniofacial fracture using rational cubic Ball curve. The idea of choosing Ball curve is based on its robustness of computing efficiency over Bezier curve. The main steps are conversion of Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (Dicom) images to binary images, boundary extraction and corner point detection, Ball curve fitting with genetic algorithm and final solution conversion to Dicom format. The last section illustrates a real case of craniofacial reconstruction using the proposed method which clearly indicates the applicability of this met

Modern management of bladder exstrophy repair.

The exstrophy-epispadias complex is a rare congenital malformation of the genitourinary system, abdominal wall musculature, and pelvic bones. Historically, surgical outcomes in patients with classic bladder exstrophy, the most common presentation of the exstrophy-epispadias complex, were poor. However, modern techniques have increased the success of achieving urinary continence, satisfactory cosmesis, and improved quality of life. Still, recent studies recognize complications that may occur during management of these patients. This review provides readers with an overview of the exstrophy-epis

Non-syndromic oxycephaly and brachycephaly: a review.

BACKGROUND: Non-syndromic coronal synostoses oxycephaly and brachycephaly (NSCSOB) are rare. Their natural history, surgical management, and outcome are debated. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We reviewed the available literature on NSCSOB. In addition, we reviewed retrospectively our experience with cases of NSCSOB, managed and operated by our joint craniofacial team since 1984. Newborns underwent perifrontal craniectomy, while infants and older children underwent fronto-orbital advancement with frontoparietal remodeling. Cases with delayed onset of faciosynostosis were excluded. RESULTS: Some cases

The shell technique: bilateral fronto-orbital reshaping in trigonocephaly.

The shell technique, used in the Pediatric Neurosurgical Department at the Catholic University, Rome, since the 1990s for the correction of trigonocephaly, is associated to a significant reduction in surgical time and intraoperative blood loss as compared to other procedures, while allowing an adequate remodelling of the bifrontal bone by means of multiple radial osteotomies. The technique does not necessitate the creation of a supraorbital bar, as the supraorbital ridges are modified in situ, further reducing the operative blood loss. In spite of reduced surgical time and manipulation, this p

[Current situation of surgical treatment of inferior polar fracture of patella].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the advance in surgical treatment of inferior pole fracture of patella and to explore the existing problems and further research directions. METHODS: Domestic and foreign literature in recent years on patella fracture was extensively reviewed, the surgical treatment of inferior pole fracture of patella was summarized by combining the research findings with clinical experience. RESULTS: The surgical treatment of inferior pole of patella fractures included retaining the integrity of the patella and partial patellectomy of inferior pole of patella and extending knee in

Nipple invagination: the umbrella effect.

The authors present their technique for correction of invaginated nipple, a procedure used for the past 20 years. Most often, this condition is a consequence of a subareolar muscle diastasis associated with short fibrous septa as well as short and fibrotic ducts. The correction technique specifically divides the fibrous tracts and corrects the diastasis of the subareolar muscle. The procedure was performed for healthy patients as well as for patients with mastitis sequel treatment and surgical reduction or augmentation mammaplasty.

The bowstring canthal advancement: a new technique to correct the flattened supraorbital rim in unilateral coronal synostosis.

Patients with unilateral coronal synostosis characteristically have a recessed and flattened supraorbital rim ipsilateral to the fused suture. Despite lateral canthal advancement procedures to correct these anomalies, patients often have a persistent flattened and recessed supraorbital rim after surgery. Current procedures address the pathologic features of the orbital rim only partially by advancing forward a deformed supraorbital rim without correcting the abnormal flattening of the normal rim curvature. The authors describe a technique modification of the supraorbital rim advancement proced

[Reconstructive-reparative surgeries on the esophagus in burn cicatricial strictures].

Esophagoplasty was performed in 196 patients. Combined disease of the esophagus and stomach was in 71 patients. Esophagogastroplasty was performed in 122 patients, including 104 with gastric tube, 12 -- with whole stomach, 6 -- by means of lengthening of whole stomach. Insufficiency of cervical anastomosis was revealed in 17.2% cases. Long-term results (from 6 months to 9 years) were studied in 77.9% patients. Lethality was 4.2%. Esophagocoloplasty was performed in 74 patients. Insufficiency of cervical anastomosis was seen in 14.5% cases. Long-term results (from 5 months to 9 years) are avail

Surgical therapy in transsexual patients: a multi-disciplinary approach.

A transsexual patient has the constant and persistent conviction that he or she belongs to the opposite sex, thus creating a deeply seated gender identity conflict. With psychotherapy being unsuccessful, it has been proven that in carefully selected patients, gender reassignment or adjusting the body to the mind (both with hormones and surgery) is the best way to normalize their lives. Optimal treatment of these patients requires the multidisciplinary approach of a gender team with the input of several specialties. Such a team consists of a nucleus of physicians who sees the patient more frequ

Aesthetic and plastic surgery for trichorhinophalangeal syndrome.

Trichorhinophalangeal syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by a number of clinical features including short stature, sparse scalp hair, a pear-shaped bulbous nose, upper lip deformity, protruding ears, mandibular hypoplasia, and cone-shaped epiphyses of the phalanges. The syndrome has three subgroups: types I, II, and III. Although a few authors have pointed out the importance of aesthetic and plastic surgery in this syndrome, it has attracted relatively little attention. This review of the literature indicates that many patients have had various surgical corrections for as
