Much attention has focused on the hypothesis that there is enhanced plasticity of sensorimotor circuits in patients with dystonia. A common experimental method to assess plasticity in dystonia research is paired associative stimulation (PAS). Excessive, nonfocal effects of PAS were observed in early studies of dystonia; however, these large effects have not been uniformly replicated. In this viewpoint, data from 15 patients with writing dystonia are presented. We suggest that, as in healthy individuals, the effects of PAS are highly variable. A review of previous studies examining PAS in writi

UNLABELLED: Ultrasonography is a diagnostic technique used in many clinical specialties that should also be used by plastic surgeons. The authors have used ultrasonography since 2011 as part of the routine follow-up evaluation for all their patients who have undergone breast augmentation (the main indication), body implants, gynecomastia, fat transfer, or abdominoplasty. The main goal of this study was to correlate normal and pathologic conditions clinically with their respective imaging findings. The secondary aim was to establish the utility of this tool in a plastic surgery setting. With in

Synaptic transmission through descending motor pathways to lumbar motoneurons and then to leg muscles is essential for walking in humans and rats. Spinal cord injury (SCI), even when incomplete, results in diminished transmission to motoneurons and very limited recovery of motor function. Neurotrophins have emerged as essential molecules known to promote cell survival and support anatomical reorganization in damaged spinal cord. This review will summarize the evidence implicating the role of neurotrophins in synaptic plasticity in both undamaged and damaged spinal cord, with special emphasis o

Hormone-secreting cells within the anterior pituitary gland may form organized and interdigitated networks that adapt to changing endocrine conditions in different physiological contexts. For gonadotropes, this might reflect a strategy to cope with acute changes throughout different female reproductive stages. The current study examined gonadotropes in female mice at characteristically different hormonal stages: prepubertal, postpubertal, and lactating. Gonadotrope plasticity was examined at the level of the whole population and single cells at different stages by imaging both fixed and live p

PURPOSE: Little is known about neuronal changes during ageing in the visual system of mice which are increasingly being used as animal models for human visual disorders.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Measuring the optomotor response to moving gratings, visual acuity of C57BL/6-mice was 0.39 cycles/degree (cyc/deg) until 12 months of age and declined to 0.27 cyc/deg (by 30%) at 26 months. In the visual water task, a cortex-dependent task based on visual discrimination learning, visual acuity remained stable at 0.58 cyc/deg up to 21 months and then declined to 0.48 cyc/deg (by 19%) at 27 months. A case of self-strangulation with a rare kind of ligature material is reported and discussed. The merit of the case lies in the 'self-retaining' nature of the ligature material deployed. The case subject was a 50 year old man found dead in an open field with a unique ligature material of 'plastic lock tie' in-situ at neck. Forensic autopsy revealed ligature mark above the level of thyroid cartilage, evidence of bleeding through mouth and nostrils along with generalized features of congestion. Toxicological analysis of blood and viscera detected organophosphorus poison in stomach contents. Caus

BACKGROUND: Patient requests for plastic surgery of the female genitalia have become more common. There are several technical options to manage hypertrophic labia minora, including direct excision, wedge resection, and deepithelialization. Labia majora hypertrophy and hypoplasia can also be managed surgically. The aim of this study was to summarize labioplasty techniques to date, and describe the senior author's technique for labia minora and majora labioplasty.
METHODS: Seventy-four patients underwent direct labia minora excision with or without clitoral hood molding and management of labia

Herniations of the cervical disk in plastic surgeons are far more common in practice than the paucity of reported cases would indicate. A likely explanation may be the peculiar, nonergonomic positions that plastic surgeons must hold during surgery while wearing a headlight and loupes. From January 2003 to December 2006, at Tri-Service General Hospital, Taiwan, 4 plastic surgeons experienced herniations of the cervical disk. Magnetic resonance imaging study indicated there was disk herniation or bulging with spinal cord impingement. Two plastic surgeons received cervical diskectomy, corpectomy

One major goal in Neuroscience is the development of strategies promoting neural plasticity in the adult central nervous system, when functional recovery from brain disease and injury is limited. New evidence has underscored a pivotal role for cortical inhibitory circuitries in regulating plasticity both during development and in adulthood. This paper summarizes recent findings showing that the inhibition-excitation balance controls adult brain plasticity and is at the core of the pathogenesis of neurodevelopmental disorders like autism, Down syndrome, and Rett syndrome.

Striatal dopamine (DA) denervation results in a significant loss of dendritic spines on medium spiny projection neurons in Parkinson's disease. In 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine-treated parkinsonian monkeys, spines contacted either by cortical or thalamic glutamatergic terminals are severely affected on both direct and indirect striatofugal neurons. In rodents, indirect pathway neurons appear to be more sensitive, at least in early stages of acute dopamine denervation. The remaining corticostriatal and thalamostriatal axo-spinous synapses undergo complex ultrastructural remodelin

Plastic bronchitis or "Bronchitis Plastica" is a rare disease characterized by the formation of thick, tenacious, arborizing mucofibrinous tracheobronchial casts that result in life-threatening airway obstruction and pulmonary failure. We review three children who developed recurrent plastic bronchitis after undergoing a Fontan procedure for single ventricle physiology. Case series of three patients with plastic bronchitis at a tertiary referral children's hospital. All patients required repeated bronchoscopies, one requiring four separate ones over a week's period, for removal of the rigid ca

Visual cortical plasticity can be either rapid, occurring in response to abrupt changes in neural activity, or slow, occurring over days as a homeostatic process for adapting neuronal responsiveness. Recent advances have shown that the magnitude and polarity of rapid synaptic modifications are regulated by neuromodulators, while homeostatic modifications can occur through regulation of cytokine actions or N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor subunit composition. Synaptic and homeostatic plasticity together produce the normal physiological response to monocular impairments. In vivo studies have

As the incidence of facial skin tumors is rising, otorhinolaryngologists are becoming more and more involved in the field of facial plastic surgery. The most common tumor locations on the head are the sun-exposed areas such as the nose, forehead, cheek, and auricle. The most common histologic findings are actinic keratosis and basal cell carcinoma. In planning tumor resection and defect repair, many factors, including histology, size, and localization of the tumor as well as conditions of the adjacent skin, must be considered. The key to defect repair after tumor resection is to choose the mos

The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of acute vestibular deficit on the cerebral cortex and its correlation with clinical signs and symptoms. Eight right-handed patients affected by vestibular neuritis, a purely peripheral vestibular lesion, underwent two brain single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) in 1 month. The first SPECT analysis revealed reduced blood flow in the temporal frontal area of the right hemisphere in seven of eight patients, independent of the right/left location of the lesion. The alteration was present always in the right, non-dominant hemisphere and

Stem cells with certain characteristics have become promising tools for molecular medicine. They have the potential to self-regenerate and to differentiate into specific tissues. Besides their great potential, embryonic stem cells (ESC) run the risk of enhanced tumorigenesis. The use of human embryonic stem cells (hESC) is ethically problematic because their isolation involves the destruction of human embryos. Recently developed methods generate are able to pluripotent stem cells from fibroblasts. Alternatives for ESC are adult stem cells (ASC) derived from bone marrow, cord blood, amniotic fl

Stroke is the second commonest cause of death and the principal cause of adult disability in the world. In most cases ischemic injuries have been reported to induce mild to severe permanent deficits. Nevertheless, recovery is often dynamic, reflecting the ability of the injured neuronal networks to adapt. Plastic phenomena occurring in the cerebral cortex and in subcortical structures after ischemic injuries have been documented at the synaptic, cellular, and network level and several findings suggest that they may play a key role during neurorehabilitation in human stroke survivors. In partic

Voltage-gated calcium (Ca(2+)) channels initiate release of neurotransmitters at synapses, and regulation of presynaptic Ca(2+) channels has a powerful influence on synaptic strength. Presynaptic Ca(2+) channels form a large signaling complex, which targets synaptic vesicles to Ca(2+) channels for efficient release and mediates Ca(2+) channel regulation. Presynaptic plasticity regulates synaptic function on the timescale of milliseconds to minutes in response to neurotransmitters and the frequency of action potentials. This article reviews the regulation of presynaptic Ca(2+) channels by effec

Huntington's disease (HD) is a late-onset neurodegenerative disorder that follows an autosomal-dominant pattern of inheritance. In human cases of HD and experimental models of the disease, multiple alterations in neurotransmitters and post-receptor machineries have been described. Dopamine, acetylcholine and glutamate signalling, which usually cooperate in the induction of physiological synaptic plasticity, are all disrupted. Impairment of the induction and reversal of the main forms of neuronal synaptic plasticity influences the computational function of complex neural circuits that mediate e

OBJECTIVE: Plastic bronchitis is an unusual condition in children, associated with formation of mucofibrinous casts and mucous plugging of the tracheobronchial tree. Given that this illness is part of the differential diagnosis of acute respiratory failure, early treatment is important for improved prognosis. The aim of this report is to describe a case of plastic bronchitis in a child with alpha-thalassemia that was treated successfully with endoscopy.
DESCRIPTION: A three year old, black, male child, previously healthy, presented with acute respiratory failure and a chest x-ray showing pulm
