Waste-to-Energy (WtE) plants constitute one of the most common waste management options to deal with municipal solid waste. WtE plants have the dual objective to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills and simultaneously to produce useful energy (heat and/or power). Energy from WtE is gaining steadily increasing importance in the energy mix of several countries. Norway is no exception, as energy recovered from waste currently represents the main energy source of the Norwegian district heating system. Life-cycle assessments (LCA) of WtE systems in a Norwegian context are quasi-nonexistent,

INTRODUCTION: The global HIV response, once a model of progress and innovation, faces a profound moment. Despite four decades of pivotal scientific and programmatic advances-most notably in antiretroviral therapy (ART) and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)-the world remains off track to meet the 2025 and 2030 targets for ending AIDS as a public health threat. New acquisitions and AIDS-related deaths remain unacceptably high, particularly among key populations and in low- and middle-income countries. The abrupt U.S. funding reversals in 2025 have severely disrupted support for HIV efforts. Cuts t

Educational assessment in many African contexts continues to be shaped largely by Eurocentric traditions of measurement that emphasize standardization, objectivity, and uniformity. While these approaches have contributed to the development of formal education systems, they have also tended to overlook or marginalize Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS), Afrocentric perspectives, and community-based ways of knowing. This raises important questions about whose knowledge is recognized and valued within existing assessment practices. This paper examines the issue of epistemic justice in educational

BACKGROUND: There is a growing need for new knowledge about healthcare policy implementation that is relevant to both researchers and practitioners. Many policy initiatives fail due to insufficient coordination between different system levels and conflicting agendas among various actors. This paper aims to propose and illustrate an analytical framework using a multilevel-multilogic framework. This framework helps reveal the combined challenges encountered when implementing policies within public healthcare systems.
METHODS: A multiple case study was conducted, focusing on the implementation o

OBJECTIVES: Justice and equity-focused practices in health services play a critical but overlooked role in low back pain (LBP) care. Critical reflexivity - the ability to examine and challenge power relations, and broader social issues embedded in everyday life - can be a useful tool to foster practices that are more socially just. No research has yet explored this approach in back pain health services. This study sought to understand how clinicians construct LBP in relation to broader socio-cultural-political aspects of care and explore if those constructions changed when clinicians engaged w

Initial and subsequent waves of COVID-19 in Uganda disrupted the delivery of HIV care. In rural areas, village health teams and organisations on the ground had to develop strategies to ensure that people living with HIV could continue their treatment. It was necessary to take evolving circumstances into account, including dealing with movement restrictions, constrained access to food and stigma due to anonymity being lost as a result of a shift from health facility-based services to community-level support. Uganda has a long history of community-driven response to HIV, although health systems

INTRODUCTION: Equity and social justice have long been key tenets of health promotion practice, policy and research. Health promotion foregrounds the pertinence of social, economic, cultural, political and spiritual life in creating and maintaining health. This necessitates a critical structural determinants of health perspective that actively engages with the experiences of health and wellbeing among diverse peoples. The inequitable impacts of pandemics are well documented, as are calls for improved pandemic responses. Yet, current pandemic and emergency preparedness plans do not adequately a

Bickenbach et al. in their paper propose the transformation of the Learning Health System paradigm into a Learning Rehabilitation System. The shift towards Rehabilitation, as opposed to the traditional anatomical-physiological approach, holds paramount importance in healthcare since Rehabilitation, as defined by the World Health Organization, centers on the individual, emphasizing the optimization of functioning and reduction of disability. In this commentary we would like to add some concepts to the discussion. When establishing an Individual Rehabilitation Project, the environment in which p

BACKGROUND: Violence against healthcare is a significant public health issue worldwide, yet it remains poorly documented in resource-limited countries, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. This study aims to explore the causes of such violence, types, perpetrators, consequences and mechanisms for its prevention within the post-conflict context of the South Kivu province in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
METHODS: This exploratory qualitative study was conducted from April to May 2022 in the health zones (HZ) of Kamituga, Katana and Walungu. A diverse group of participants, includ

Background: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is among the most prevalent and disabling mental health conditions affecting military veterans in Western countries. In recent decades, PTSD has increasingly been conceptualized as a systemic neuropsychological injury shaped not only by individual psychopathology, but also by institutional, cultural, and political contexts, particularly in settings of prolonged conflict and political violence. This shift has given rise to diverse national rehabilitation models that extend beyond symptom-focused care. This narrative comparative review aims to ex

In keeping with the introduction of market-oriented reforms since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia's health care system has undergone a series of sweeping changes since 1992. These reforms, intended to overhaul socialized methods of health care financing and delivery and to replace them with a structure of competitive incentives to improve efficiency and quality of care, have met with mixed levels of implementation and results. This article probes some of the sources of support for and resistance to change in Russia's system of health care financing and delivery. It does so through a n

The aim of this note is to introduce the report on the health system of Spain written in 1967 by the WHO expert on Public Health Administration, and retired professor of the University of Manchester, Prof. CF Brockington, I summarise along general lines the relationships established between Spain and the WHO, describe the role of consultants, give an outline of the character of this author and the political context of the time. I also describe the difficulties encountered with his recommendations, which can nevertheless be viewed as seminal contributions to the major changes that were to take

Since decisions are made through the political process in local government, planners are being advised to modify their style of planning. Planners acknowledge the need to modify the practice of planning, but reforms are introduced within the framework of the comprehensive plan which continues to serve as the principal planning instrument. This results in internal conflicts within the planning process. In this paper a proposal is made for a planning system which is composed of a series of interacting building blocks. The planning process is molded to fit the management function and capability o

Reducing systemic inequities in testing, access to care, social protection - and in the scientific process - is essential to end TB. Incorporating social science methods and expertise on inequity into the mainstream TB response would help ensure that political commitments to equity move beyond symbolic gestures. We convened a meeting between TB social scientists, people with lived experience, civil society and community members to discuss equity within the global TB response. Here, we propose five means by which a social science lens can strengthen equitable, person-centred responses and recon

The novel coronavirus 2019 illness (COVID-19) has completely transformed and uprooted lives across the globe. While different diseases, there are critical observations and lessons to be learned from the ongoing HIV epidemic to inform our response to COVID-19. We reflect on how this relates to (1) testing, including contact tracing; (2) health system redesign; (3) telehealth; (4) health disparities; (5) political denial, with inadequate and uncoordinated governmental response; (6) occupational exposure; and (7) complex reactions among healthcare providers. Decades of experiences with HIV provid

Cadaveric anatomy remains indispensable in medical education. However, the development of body donation in China faces challenges due to various socio-cultural constraints. Although medical students constitute only a minor proportion of body and organ donors, their attitudes toward donation may reflect their perceptions of silent mentors and cognition of organ donation to some extent. The findings may help clarify the effects of anatomical education and even the humanistic spirit conveyed by instructors, while also providing guidance for optimizing anatomy curricula to cultivate compassion and

Climate disasters are increasingly understood not as natural phenomena alone but as outcomes shaped by governance systems and institutional capacities. While existing scholarship has documented flood impacts and theorized governance deficits, few studies have traced the precise causal pathways through which institutional pathologies-fragmentation, spatial mismatch, and perverse incentives-produce recurrent disaster outcomes. This study addresses this gap by diagnosing the systemic governance failures that amplified the 2025 floods. Employing a Diagnostic Policy Analysis Framework for Recurrent

The global food and nutrition enterprise is confronted with daunting challenges to all aspects of the food system, from social/economic/political crises to pandemic diseases to climate change, all of which impact our ability to meet the health needs of a growing population. The response has been focused on vulnerable groups and critical periods of human development, starting with the "first 1000 d" (i.e., pregnancy and the first 2 y of life). However, another critical developmental period, the "next 7000 d" (i.e., 2-21 y of age), has received less attention in terms of efforts to inform our un
