Real-time volatilomics reveals microbiota and pathogen fingerprints in the honey bee.

UNLABELLED: Understanding the complex relationship between gut microbiota and their hosts often relies on invasive sampling techniques. Honey bees provide a tractable model for host-microbe studies. Here, we establish single-bee volatilomics using secondary electrospray ionization-high-resolution mass spectrometry (SESI-HRMS) to examine volatile organic compounds released to the air around an individual live honey bee. Specifically, we focused on the primary gut microbiota metabolites present in gnotobiotic bees. Our findings reveal distinct volatilome profiles in honey bees that depend on the

A mechanistic modeling system for estimating large scale emissions and transport of pollen and co-allergens.

Allergic airway diseases represent a complex health problem which can be exacerbated by the synergistic action of pollen particles and air p … he simulation of birch and ragweed pollen levels for the year 2002, during their corresponding peak pollination periods (April for birch and September for ragweed). The model simulations were driven by previously evaluated meteorological model outputs and emissions inventories for the eastern United States for the simulation period. A semi-quantitative evalua …

Arabidopsis LORELEI, a Maternally Expressed Imprinted Gene, Promotes Early Seed Development.

In flowering plants, the female gametophyte controls pollen tube reception immediately before fertilization and regulates seed development immediately after fertilization, although the controlling mechanisms remain poorly understood. Previously, we showed that LORELEI (LRE), which encodes a putative glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored membrane protein, is critical for pollen tube reception by the female gametophyte before fertilization and the initiation of seed development after fertilization. Here, we show that LRE is expressed in the synergid, egg, and central cells of the female gametoph

A search for protein biomarkers links olfactory signal transduction to social immunity.

BACKGROUND: The Western honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) is a critical component of human agriculture through its pollination activities. For years, beekeepers have controlled deadly pathogens such as Paenibacillus larvae, Nosema spp. and Varroa destructor with antibiotics and pesticides but widespread chemical resistance is appearing and most beekeepers would prefer to eliminate or reduce the use of in-hive chemicals. While such treatments are likely to still be needed, an alternate management strategy is to identify and select bees with heritable traits that allow them to resist mites and disea…

Microfungal flora of Apis mellifera anatoliaca (Hymenoptera: Apidae) and Varroa destructor (Mesostigmata: Varroidae) from the Eastern Black Sea Region and fungal vector capacity in honey bee colonies.

Honey bees have a great economic importance both in Turkey and in the world due to the products they produce and their contribution to pollination. For this reason, many microflora and microbiota studies have been conducted on bees. While these research were primarily focused on pathogen isolation, the ecological roles of non-pathogenic flora members and how they may be used are now being studied more extensively. Considering the importance of pathogens, the number of studies is expected to continue to increase. This study was carried out to determine the microfungal flora of the body surfaces…

Detection of adenovirus, papillomavirus and parvovirus in Brazilian bats of the species Artibeus lituratus and Sturnira lilium.

Bats play a significant role in maintaining their ecosystems through pollination, dispersal of seeds, and control of insect populations, but they are also known to host many microorganisms and have been described as natural reservoirs for viruses with zoonotic potential. The diversity of viruses in these animals remains largely unknown, however, because studies are limited by species, location, virus target, or sample type. Therefore, the aim of this study was to detect fragments of viral genomes in bat samples. We performed high-throughput sequencing analysis and specific PCR and RT-PCR on po…

Effects of husk and harvest time on carotenoid content and acceptability of roasted fresh cobs of orange maize hybrids.

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is a major public health problem in many developing countries. Orange maize is preferred as green maize and consu … sted without husk. Hybrid 5 had the highest β-carotene concentration and PVA value at 27 days after pollination (DAP) and 34DAP when unprocessed and roasted without husk. This information can help researchers in choosing proper roasting methods to increase the retention of high levels of β-carotene and PVA in orange maize that can be delivered to consumers th …

Allergy to bumblebee venom.

Allergy to bumblebee venom is a rare form of Hymenoptera venom allergy. Because bumblebees are increasingly used for the pollination of greenhouse plants, the prevalence of this Hymenoptera allergy has increased during the past decade. The clinical presentation, diagnosis and therapy of bumblebee venom allergy are similar to other Hymenoptera venom allergies. There is a significant immunological cross-reactivity between bumblebee and honeybee venom. It has been claimed that immunotherapy with honeybee venom can protect patients with bumblebee venom allergy. This concept, however, has been call…

Allergy to Olea europaea pollen: relationship between skin prick tests, RAST, ELISA and bronchial provocations tests.

Olea Europaea is the most important allergenic tree in Southern Italy and in the Naples area. Its pollination period lasts from the middle of April to the end of June. In our pollinosis patients we observed frequency of sensitization of 13.05% to Olea pollen. That means that this pollen follows Parietaria (47.80%) and Gramineae (34.70%) regarding the frequency of allergic sensitization. In an attempt to evaluate the degree of allergic sensitization to Olea pollen and the concordance of various tests, we studied 24 asthmatic patients with skin positivity to only this pollen using commercially a…

A drone imagery dataset for semantic segmentation of urban garden ground covers in biodiversity studies.

Urban gardens promote urban biodiversity by providing diverse ground covers that support habitat provision, pollination, pest control, and soil functions. However, lacking high spatial resolution images, their spatial heterogeneity remains poorly mapped, limiting our understanding of how these features support ecosystem services. This study presents a high-resolution dataset derived from unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) RGB imagery for the semantic segmentation of diverse ground covers in urban community gardens. The dataset consists of 2,521 images processed into 24 orthomosaics, acquired in 202…

Selected Biochemical Markers Change after Oral Administration of Pesticide Mixtures in Honey Bees.

The honey bee is an important pollinator. In the environment, it can be exposed to many harmful factors, such as pesticides. Nowadays, attention is paid to evaluating the potentially harmful effects of these substances. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of worst-case environmental concentrations of pesticide mixtures on honey bee survival and selected physiological markers (the activity of ALT, AST, ALP, and GGTP, and the concentration of albumin, creatinine, urea, and uric acid). Pesticides of three different groups (insecticide-acetamiprid, herbicide-glyphosate, and fungicide-tebuconaz

Honeybees foraging response in genetically diversified opium poppy.

Studies were carried out on honeybees foraging on plant flowers. Results showed significantly higher foraging response of honeybees (Apis mellifera) in genetically divergent narcotic plant opium poppy (Papaver somniferum). Of the 18 mutants and two locally adapted cultivars of diverse genotypes screened, eight revealed significantly greater foraging response manifesting honeybee's preference towards specific plant morphotypes. The number of flower bloom did not correspond to number of foraging bees in both mutant and cultivar plant types of opium poppy. The genotype specific foraging response

Occupational contact urticaria and late-phase bronchial asthma caused by compositae pollen in a florist.

Insect-pollinated members of the plant family Compositae (Asteraceae) rarely cause immediate-type hypersensitivity disease; however, this may have quite disabling consequences, which is shown by the case of a 42-year-old female florist. She developed contact urticaria later accompanied by rhinoconjunctivitis and bronchial asthma with maximum obstruction occurring some hours after the end of occupational exposure to the causative Compositae pollens of, for example, dandelions, blazing star, golden rod, yarrow, Aster ssp, chrysanthemums, and marguerite. Skin testing revealed immediate-type hyper

Cadmium and Selenate Exposure Affects the Honey Bee Microbiome and Metabolome, and Bee-Associated Bacteria Show Potential for Bioaccumulation.

Honey bees are important insect pollinators used heavily in agriculture and can be found in diverse environments. Bees may encounter toxicants such as cadmium and selenate by foraging on plants growing in contaminated areas, which can result in negative health effects. Honey bees are known to have a simple and consistent microbiome that conveys many benefits to the host, and toxicant exposure may impact this symbiotic microbial community. We used 16S rRNA gene sequencing to assay the effects that sublethal cadmium and selenate treatments had over 7 days and found that both treatments significa

Balanced polymorphism in a floral transcription factor underlies the ancient rhythm of daily sex alternation in avocado.

In avocado and certain wild relatives in Lauraceae, a highly synchronized daily rhythm of floral sex timing promotes cross-pollination between two hermaphroditic flowering types. A-type plants present female-phase flowers in the morning and male-phase flowers in the afternoon, while B-types show the complementary pattern-a form of heterodichogamy. We mapped this dimorphism to a pair of dominant and recessive haplotypes at SDMYB, which belongs to a subgroup of R2R3 MYB transcription factors established as key regulators of floral maturation with links to circadian hormone signaling. Rhythmic di…
