Magnetic resonance imaging of ruptured Baker's cyst.

The clinical presentation of a ruptured Baker's cyst and of thrombophlebitis can be identical. Venography, arthrography, and more recently ultrasonography have been used to differentiate these two entities. We report a patient with a ruptured Baker's cyst who was also evaluated using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The soft-tissue abnormalities were better demonstrated by MRI than by the other imaging methods.

Fine needle aspiration cytology of bursal cyst.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the cytomorphology of bursal cyst and assess the efficacy of aspiration cytology in its diagnosis and treatment. STUDY DESIGN: Nineteen cases of bursal cyst seen over four years were studied. Material was obtained by fine needle aspiration. The smears were stained with May-Grünwald-Giemsa stain and hematoxylin and eosin. RESULTS: Eight cysts were in the popliteal fossa, 4 on the elbow, 3 on the knee, 2 on the shoulder and 2 in the calf. Gelatinous material was aspirated in all the cases. In some cases the cyst collapsed after aspiration. The key diagnostic features wer

Two cases of symptomatic adventitial cystic disease involving the popliteal artery and femoral vein.

Adventitial cystic disease is a rare condition involving mucinous cysts within the adventitial layer of arteries or veins. We report two distinct cases: one in the popliteal artery presenting with intermittent claudication and another in the femoral vein presenting with limb swelling and pain. The diagnosis was established based on characteristic imaging findings, and both lesions were completely excised without recurrence. The arterial cyst contained clear gelatinous fluid, and the venous cyst contained hemorrhagic material, possibly related to anticoagulant use. Adventitial cystic disease sh

Fascicular Involvement of the Posterior Tibial Nerve as a Result of Perineural Ganglion Cyst at the Posterior Tibial Nerve in the Calf: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

We report a 19-year-old woman with a 6-month history of nontraumatic left foot numbness associated with intermittent weakness. Nerve conduction studies and electromyography localized the lesion to the posterior tibial nerve, below the innervation to the soleus and medial gastrocnemius muscles. MRI of the left leg revealed a multiloculated cystic collection near the proximal tibiofibular joint. Surgical excision and pathology confirmed the diagnosis of a ganglion cyst, in an atypical location distal to the popliteal fossa. We believe this is the first reported case of fascicular posterior tibia

A case with recurrent calf pain and swelling: recurrent spontaneous calf haematoma.

The differential diagnosis of unilateral calf swelling and pain includes deep venous thrombosis, haematoma, ruptured popliteal cyst, infection, lymph oedema, and sarcoma. It is important to distinguish between these entities, as the treatment of each is different. We present a case of recurrent calf swelling due to spontaneous calf haematoma diagnosed with ultrasound and MRI and subsequently treated conservatively.

Cystic Adventitial Disease of the Popliteal Artery With Recurrent Intermittent Claudication After Drug-Coating Balloon Angioplasty: A Case Report Treated by Surgical Treatment.

Cystic adventitial disease of the popliteal artery is a rare cause of unilateral intermittent claudication. The etiology of cystic adventitial disease is unknown, and affected patients are younger than those diagnosed with chronic arteriosclerosis. A 62-year-old man presented with a history of right leg claudication, which occurred after walking a distance of 500 m. The patient had no history of cardiovascular risk factors or trauma in the lower extremities. The ankle-brachial pressure index (ABI) was 0.58 in the affected leg. The patient was referred to the cardiovascular department. On Doppl

Arthroscopic treatment of a medial meniscal cyst using a posterior trans-septal approach: a case report.

Arthroscopic partial menisectomy followed by cyst decompression is currently recommended for treatment of a meniscal cyst. However, it is doubtful whether partial menisectomy should be performed on cysts communicating with the joint in cases without a meniscal tear on its surface since meniscal function will be sacrificed. In this report, a meniscal cyst arising from the posterior horn of the medial meniscus without meniscal tear on its surface was resected using an arthroscopic posterior trans-septal approach. A 59 year-old male presented to our hospital with popliteal pain when standing up a

Deep peroneal nerve paresis in a runner caused by ganglion at capitulum peronei. Case report and review of the literature.

Although lateral popliteal sciatic nerve damage is not one of the commonest diseases in the general population, it is quite frequent among athletes. Several physiopathologic mechanisms have been thought to bring about this damage in athletes. Soft tissue ganglions with neurological involvement of the lateral popliteal sciatic nerve or its terminal rami are in differential diagnosis with several lesions of this area, as direct or indirect trauma, subcutaneous rupture of anterior tibialis muscle and long peroneal muscle, disc hernia, intraspinal tumor, anterior tarsal tunnel syndrome, cysts, neu

Distal embolization from medial cystic degeneration of the popliteal artery.

This is the first reported case of medial cystic degeneration of the popliteal artery presenting as distal embolization and contains a high-definition photo of the cyst in situ. Duplex ultrasound and magnetic resonance angiography are useful adjuncts to diagnosis. Based on the published literature, resection and interposition grafting appears to be the most efficacious treatment modality.

[Venous cystic adventitial disease: a case report].

Adventitial cyst is a rare vascular disease frequently localized in the popliteal artery rarely in a vein. We report a case discovering in a 47-year-old man. As described, this lesion is characterized by an extrinsic compression of the vessel lumen by an adventitial myxoid nodule on histology. Recognition of this entity is important to ensure proper treatment.

Case report 731. Complicated Baker's cyst.

The atypical appearance of a gas-containing, noninfected, popliteal synovial cyst has been presented. The case again demonstrates the value of plain radiographs, in this instance in distinguishing gas bubbles and calcification, which may not be apparent by MRI and ultrasound. The uniqueness of this case is stressed. The cause of the gas bubbles was not ascertained.

Giant Baker's Cyst Associated with Rheumatoid Arthritis.

We report a rare case of a "giant Baker's cyst-related rheumatoid arthritis (RA)" with 95 × 26 mm dimensions originating from the semimembranosus tendon. The patient presented with chronic pain and a palpable mass behind his left calf located between the posteriosuperior aspect of the popliteal fossa and the distal third of the calf. In MRI cystic lesion which was located in soft tissue at the posterior of gastrocnemius, extensive synovial pannus inside and degeneration of medial meniscus posterior horn were observed. Arthroscopic joint debridement and partial excision of the cyst via biomecha

Pseudothrombophlebitis syndrome in a rheumatoid arthritis patient with swollen calf and persistent itching: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Baker's cyst is a benign lesion that results from degenerative or inflammatory diseases of the knee joint. When Baker's cyst ruptures, it may simulate deep vein thrombosis known as Pseudothrombophlebitis syndrome with calf pain, swelling and redness. Pseudothrombophlebitis syndrome without thrombus in popliteal veins has distinct treatment choice than deep vein thrombus. CASE PRESENTATION: In this report, we presented a 47 year-old male rheumatoid arthritis patient with complaints of redness, pain and swelling on his right calf. Pseudothrombophlebitis syndrome was diagnosed due to

Cystic adventitial disease of the common femoral artery.

Cystic adventitial disease consists of a collection of clear gelatinous material within an aberrant synovial-type cyst located in the subadventitial plane of the wall of a major artery. Recurrent minor trauma is presumed to potentiate mucin production and enlargement of the cyst with resultant arterial occlusion and symptoms of ischemia. It occurs most commonly in the popliteal artery in young men; forty-seven such patients have been reported on. Extrapopliteal disease is distinctly less frequent, occurring three times in the external iliac, three times in the radial, once in the ulnar, and on

Posterior Knee TGCT (Formerly PVNS) Masquerading as a Popliteal Lesion: Combined Arthroscopic Synovectomy and Posterior Open Excision With 8-Year Disease-Free Follow-Up.

Tenosynovial giant cell tumor (TGCT), formerly pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS), may extend into the popliteal fossa and mimic a Baker cyst, complicating diagnosis and operative planning. A 53-year-old former endurance runner presented with posterior knee pain, swelling, intermittent locking, and a palpable popliteal mass. Examination demonstrated effusion and limited range of motion; weightbearing radiographs showed mild osteoarthritic change with effusion, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed synovial hypertrophy with low T2 signal suggestive of hemosiderin deposition. Popliteal artery occlusion caused by cystic adventitial disease: successful treatment by urokinase followed by nonresectional cystotomy.

Preoperative diagnosis of an occluded popliteal artery caused by cystic adventitial disease allowed use of urokinase to successfully dissolve secondary thrombosis. Subsequent non-resectional adventitial cystotomy and evacuation of cyst contents allowed lasting restoration of a patent arterial lumen and return of normal distal pulses. This nongrafting technique may serve as a model for future patients with occluded arteries caused by this condition.
