Zygomycosis due to Basidiobolus ranarum (entomophthoromycosis basidiobolae, subcutaneous zygomycosis, subcutaneous phycomycosis, basidiobolo … this mould. An immunological test has been developed for specific diagnosis of the disease. Though potassium iodide (KI) has been the traditional drug employed in the treatment of infections by B. ranarum, several other drugs, viz amphotericin B, cotrimoxazole, ketoconazole, itraconazole and fluconazole have been successfully tried.

Serum thyroglobulin (Tg), triiodothyronine (T3), and thyroxine (T4) concentrations were measured in sera from selected patients with hyperthyroidism due to Graves' disease and with subacute thyroiditis. In agreement with previous reports, the concentration of serum Tg was elevated in untreated hyperthyroidism due to Graves' disease, being 132 +/- 124 ng/ml (mean +/- SD) as opposed to 11 +/- 6.4 ng/ml in normal subjects. The misuse of Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) severely violates the principle of fair competition in sports and jeopardizes the physical and mental health of athlete. In this study, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) was employed for the rapid detection of illicitly added AAS. Sporotrichosis caused by Sporothrix brasiliensis is an emerging zoonotic mycosis of great clinical relevance in South America. This case highlights its severe systemic presentation, reported for the first time in a feline patient from Chile. A 1-year-old neutered male cat presented with severe ulcerative dermatitis, developing a dysoxic phenotype of sepsis. OBJECTIVE: We describe a young woman with previously undiagnosed thyrotoxicosis who presented with acute liver failure (ALF).
METHODS: We present a case report and review the relevant literature.
RESULTS: An extensive evaluation excluded possible causes of ALF other than thyrotoxicosis. The management of thyrotoxicosis posed several unique challenges in the setting of ALF, particularly because we did not want to use potentially hepatotoxic thionamides.
