Short report: Somatic symptoms and associated psycho-behavioural variables: The mediating role of loneliness.

OBJECTIVES: Previous research suggests that people with higher levels of somatic symptom burden report more loneliness, psychological symptom severity, depressive symptoms, and healthcare utilisation. Loneliness may be a link between somatic symptom burden and these psycho-behavioural variables. We proposed that loneliness is highest among participants with elevated somatic symptom burden and psychological symptom severity as in somatic symptom disorder (SSD). Furthermore, we proposed loneliness as a mediator of the relationships between somatic symptom burden (1) depression, (2) SSD psycholog

Skin-to-Skin Contact for Mother and Infant: A Conceptual Framework.

Skin-to-skin contact (SSC) is a well-established, evidence-based practice with profound effects on maternal and infant outcomes. Despite global implementation of SSC with nurses at the helm, a clearly articulated and illustrated framework has yet to be identified. The purpose of this paper is to present a conceptual framework of SSC that identifies and depicts key concepts influencing the mother and infant as they engage in SSC. The framework integrates theoretical, physiological, and relational components associated with the practice and illustrates the dynamic interaction occurring between t

Female genital cutting (mutilation/circumcision): ethical and legal dimensions.

The practice better described as female genital cutting (FGC) is of long standing in some communities, and has spread to non-traditional countries by immigration. It is of varying degrees of invasiveness, often including clitoridectomy, but all raise health-related concerns, which can be of considerable physical and/or psychological severity, and compromise gynecological and obstetric care. The practice is not based on a requirement of religious observance, although parents usually seek it for their daughters in good faith. It is directed to the social control of women's sexuality, in associat

A Material-Relational Ontology of Data: Addressing Ethical Challenges in Psychological Research in a Data-Driven Era.

The shift to a society organized around digital data has come with significant-although sometimes still underappreciated-implications for psychological research. In part, this is owed to the narrowness of discussions about data ethics in the discipline, although also to the ontological assumptions about data that implicitly shape researchers' discussions and practices. The prevailing representationalist ontology of data-understanding data to be a passive abstraction that represents some preexisting phenomenon-draws researchers' attention to methodological issues, such as data quality, while si

Psychological distress, coping methods and self-care among people with diabetes mellitus in Ibadan.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder associated with serious complications if poorly controlled. Beyond routine clinical follow-up, people with diabetes (PWD) are required to engage in sustained self-care activities. Fear of complications and the demands of self-management may lead to psychological distress, which can negatively influence coping strategies and adherence to self-care practices. The study aims to determine the level of psychological distress among people with diabetes mellitus and to assess its relationship with coping styles and diabetes self-care

Anatomy of Antisemitism in Health Professions Education and Practice: A Narrative Review.

There has been an international resurgence in antisemitism in healthcare education and practice since October 7, 2023, prominently affecting the United States (US), United Kingdom (UK), Canada, and Australia. In the US, federal investigations by the US Department of Justice and the Congressional Subcommittee on Education and the Workforce were initiated into antisemitic harassment and hostile learning environments in medical schools. Healthcare organizations in the UK also came under investigation, and the US Congress opened an investigation into alleged antisemitism within a national psycholo

Benefits of Pilates on Depression, Anxiety, and Stress: An Observational Study Comparing People Practicing Pilates to Non-Active Controls.

Background: The positive effects of Pilates on balance, resistance, strength, and flexibility have been described several times. Additionally, positive effects on psychological symptoms, such as anxiety and depression, were documented. However, the change in behaviors at risk for stress-related physical disorders has not yet been validated in a group of people practicing Pilates. In light of these assumptions, changes in risk behaviors for stress-related physical disorders were assessed along with psychological symptoms, comparing a group of people practicing Pilates with non-active controls.

Introduction of a psychologically informed educational intervention for pre-licensure physical therapists in a classroom setting.

BACKGROUND: There is an increasing need for physical therapists to address psychosocial aspects of musculoskeletal pain. Psychologically informed practice is one way to deliver this type of care through the integration of biopsychosocial interventions into patient management. An important component of psychologically informed practice is patient centered communication. However, there is little research on how to effectively implement patient centered communication into pre-licensure training for physical therapists. METHODS: Thirty Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students took part in an edu

The Role of Volunteers in Supporting the Psychosocial Well-Being of Hospitalised Children with Cancer: A Narrative Review and Recommendations for Clinical Practice.

Children undergoing cancer treatment face repeated, prolonged hospitalisations carrying substantial risks of psychological distress, social isolation, and impaired development. Volunteers offering structured non-medical activities are widely employed to complement professional psychosocial care in paediatric oncology settings, yet empirical evidence examining their role specifically-as distinct from professionally delivered psychosocial interventions-remains sparse. This narrative review, conducted in accordance with SANRA criteria and drawing on a structured search of PubMed, PsycINFO, and Go

Neurologist or psychiatrist? The public and private domains of Jean-Martin Charcot.

The emergence of neurology as an autonomous, prestigious field in late-nineteenth-century Paris is well known. Less appreciated is the role that neurologists played vis-à-vis the cognate older field of psychiatry. Taking Jean-Martin Charcot, the most influential neurologist of his time, as a test case, this paper contrasts his attitudes and practice in the public setting of teaching and hospital work with his private practice. A staunch defender of a clear distinction between his field and psychiatry, Charcot's private practice displayed more flexibility. Treating hysteria and neurasthenia cre

Commemorative Naming, Intergenerational Legacy, and Continuing Bonds: An Interpretive Phenomenological Study of Being a Living Commemoration.

Commemorative naming-naming a child after a deceased family member-is a culturally rooted practice with profound emotional and relational implications. Although previous research has explored naming traditions from sociological and cultural angles, little attention has been given to the psychological experience of those who carry such names. This qualitative study examined the lived experiences of 14 Israeli adults named after deceased relatives, using interpretative phenomenological analysis to uncover personal and intergenerational meanings embedded in this practice. Participants were recrui

Prevalence and presentation of dizziness in a general practice community sample of working age people.

BACKGROUND: Dizziness is known to be a common, handicapping condition in the elderly, and a strong association between dizziness and anxiety disorders has been observed in hospital samples. However, little is known about the prevalence of dizziness among people of working age in the community and its implications for psychosocial functioning and general practice consultation and treatment. AIM: To determine the prevalence of dizziness, giddiness, vertigo, and unsteadiness, and associations with disability and handicap, symptoms of panic and agoraphobia, and general practice consultation and t

Empowering older adults-a strength-based and culturally inclusive framework for enhancing mental health outcomes.

Background: Despite the rapid growth of the older adult population and the increasing need to address mental health disparities in older adults, ageism and the embodiment of age stereotypes have negatively impacted their mental health. Both the Decade (2021-2030) of the Healthy Ageing Report from the World Health Organization and the Guidelines for Psychological Practice with Older Adults from the American Psychological Association call for greater attention to focus on the strengths of older adults, positive aspects of aging, and recognition of how cultural contexts influence their psychologi

Self-Compassion and Psychological Well-Being of Childhood Sexual Abuse Survivors: Emotional Dysregulation and Trauma-Related Shame as Mediators.

In this study, we explored explanations for the link between self-compassion and psychological well-being among a sample of adult childhood sexual abuse (CSA) survivors in the United States (n = 335). Informed by Neff's self-compassion theory, we hypothesized that the relationship between self-compassion and psychological well-being would be partially explained by a reduction in emotional dysregulation and trauma-related shame. We tested a parallel multiple mediation model with (a) emotion dysregulation and (b) trauma-related shame as the mediators. As hypothesized, we found a significant posi

Psychological toxicity in classical hematology.

Although considered "benign," mild blood count abnormalities, genetic factors imparting inconsequential thrombotic risk, and low-risk premalignant blood disorders can have significant psychological and financial impact on our patients. Several studies have demonstrated that patients with noncancerous conditions have increased levels of anxiety with distress similar to those with malignancy. Additionally, referral to a classical hematologist can be a daunting process for many patients due to uncertainties surrounding the reason for referral or misconstrued beliefs in a cancer diagnosis ascribed

Heterogeneity in fibromyalgia based upon cognitive and physical performance and psychological symptomology.

PURPOSE: This study sought to investigate the existence of subgroups within a fibromyalgia (FM) sample based on physical and cognitive performance measures, as well as self-report psychological measures. A multisystem disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain and co-morbid conditions, FM can lead to declines in cognitive functioning and difficulty with psychological health. DATA SOURCES: Community participants (n = 57 women) recruited from support groups and university center databases provided documentation of having met the criteria for diagnosis of FM. Measures included val

The routine "well child" examination: a study of its value in the discovery of significant psychological problems.

The practice of well child care by pediatricians has been a subject of increasing controversy. Previous reports in the literature have indicated a low yield of significant organic or psychological findings. In the present study, three post-residency pediatricians, working in the general pediatric unit of an HMO setting at different times, evaluated the developmental and psychological problems of patients seen in consecutive well child examinations. The nature of their problems was measured by the actual degree of intervention required of the pediatrician, rather than by standard mental health
