Efficacy and tolerance of a prebiotic, panthenol-containing repair balm in patients diagnosed with skin lesions requiring regenerative care.

Skin lesions requiring regenerative care often present significant challenges for patient treatment and management. To assess the efficacy and tolerance of a soothing and repairing balm product (Cicaplast Baume B5+, La Roche-Posay, France) when used for the treatment of skin lesions requiring regenerative care, as well as its impact on quality of life (QoL) and patient satisfaction. Patients requiring regenerative care for superficial wounds or irritative dermatitis, or requiring sedative skin care after irritating treatments, such as for actinic keratosis (AK), or skin care following a dermat

Bugs got milk? Exploring the potential of lactose as a prebiotic ingredient for the human gut microbiota of lactose-tolerant individuals.

Milk consumption is important to help meet daily nutrient requirements. However, lactose-present in dairy products-has been associated with digestive discomfort in individuals who are lactose intolerant or have inadequate lactase activity. Yet, a new perspective on this dietary component has emerged: its potential as a prebiotic for the lactose-tolerant population. We hypothesized that ingestion of lactose may improve the microbial community structure and metabolism of the gut microbiota from healthy adults. First, we assessed the acute impact of lactose ingestion on the gut microbiota of adul

Partially hydrolyzed guar gum ingestion suppresses atopic dermatitis-like symptoms through prebiotic effect in mice.

Growing knowledge reveals the association between the gut microbiome and skin, rendering the gut microbiome an appealing potential therapeutic target for atopic dermatitis (AD). In this study, we assessed the effect of partially hydrolyzed guar gum (PHGG) on AD-like symptoms induced by topical 1-Chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene (DNCB) in BALB/c mice. Four weeks of PHGG feeding prevented the loss of epidermal barrier integrity and epithelial hyperplasia in the AD lesion (p<0.05, effect size >0.80), indicating a reduction in AD-like symptoms. According to the postulated mechanism, PHGG ingestion modula

Prebiotic proanthocyanidins inhibit bile reflux-induced esophageal adenocarcinoma through reshaping the gut microbiome and esophageal metabolome.

The gut and local esophageal microbiome progressively shift from healthy commensal bacteria to inflammation-linked pathogenic bacteria in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease, Barrett's esophagus, and esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC). However, mechanisms by which microbial communities and metabolites contribute to reflux-driven EAC remain incompletely understood and challenging to target. Herein, we utilized a rat reflux-induced EAC model to investigate targeting the gut microbiome-esophageal metabolome axis with cranberry proanthocyanidins (C-PAC) to inhibit EAC progression. Combining Gut Microbiota Modulation and Enzymatic-Triggered Colonic Delivery by Prebiotic Nanoparticles Improves Mouse Colitis Therapy.

Lignin's complex and highly branched architecture plays a critical role in biomass utilisation. Yet, unravelling the intricate relation between lignin's measurable structural features and the underlying biosynthesis dynamics remains a major challenge. This difficulty stems from the variability in monolignol and bond type compositions, experimental datasets with typically distinct degrees of completeness, and extraction methods that differently impact molecular features. Together, this highlights the need for advanced numerical frameworks able to rationalise experimental data. We introduce Lign

Citrus depressa peel extract acts as a prebiotic to reduce lipid accumulation and modulate gut microbiota in obese mice.

Citrus peels contain abundant polyphenols, particularly flavonoids, and have been shown to exert lipid accumulation decreasing ability. In this study, Citrus depressa peel applied to oven drying and extracted with ethanol extract as CDEE to analyze its flavonoids compositions and investigated its effects on a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice model. CDEE contained several flavonoids such as hesperidin, sinesentin, nobiletin, tangeretin, 5-demethylnobiletin, and 5-demethyltangeretin. The mice fed an HFD, and administration of 2% CDEE to could decrease weight gain, abdominal fat weight, ing

Evaluation of gum Arabic (Acacia Senegal) as a natural prebiotic to improve growth performance and health status of broiler chickens.

Gum Arabic (GA) is a natural product containing soluble fiber that is indigestible in the gastrointestinal tract and has been used as a traditional medicine to treat many diseases such as intestinal inflammation, kidney disease, and liver disorders, which may be reflected in the improved performance of broiler chickens when used. Therefore, the main objective of the current study was to evaluate the effects of GA on the performance, immune system, visceral organs, functional tests, and histological changes of the ileum, liver, and kidneys of broilers. A total of 432 1-day-old male broilers wer

A Plausible Prebiotic Path to Nucleosides: Ribosides and Related Aldosides Generated from Ribulose, Fructose, and Similar Abiotic Precursors.

The prebiotic origins of ribose, nucleosides, and eventually RNA are enduring questions whose answers are central to the RNA world hypothesis. The abiotic synthesis of sugars was first demonstrated over a century ago, but no known prebiotic reaction produces ribose (an aldose sugar) selectively and in good yield. In contrast, ribulose, and fructose (ketose sugars) and other monosaccharides are formed in high yield by several robust abiotic reactions. It is reported here that ketose sugars - both ketopentoses and ketohexoes - serve as precursors for the formation of ribosides and other aldoside

Prebiotic inulin as a treatment of obesity related nonalcoholic fatty liver disease through gut microbiota: a critical review.

The microbial-derived products, including short chain fatty acids, lipopolysaccharide and secondary bile acids, have been shown to participate in the regulation of hepatic lipid metabolism. Previous studies have demonstrated that prebiotics, such as oligosaccharide and inulin, have abilities to change the concentration of microbial-derived products through modulating the microbial community structure, thus controlling body weight and alleviating hepatic fat accumulation. However, recent evidence indicates that there are individual differences in host response upon inulin treatment due to the d…

Comparison of the modulatory effects of three structurally similar potential prebiotic substrates on an in vitro multi-species oral biofilm.

Previous research identified potential prebiotic substrates for oral health like the structural analogues N-acetyl-D-mannosamine (NADM) and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (NADG). The main hypothesis of the current study was twofold. Firstly, it was hypothesized that the modulatory effects of NADM are not limited to changes in multi-species oral biofilm composition, but also include effects on metabolism, virulence, and inflammatory potential. Secondly, the presence and orientation of their N-acetyl group could play a role. Therefore, a comparison was made between the effects of NADM, NADG and D-(+)-ma

Supplementation with a prebiotic (polydextrose) in obese mouse pregnancy improves maternal glucose homeostasis and protects against offspring obesity.

OBJECTIVES: We hypothesised that maternal diet-induced-obesity has adverse consequences for offspring energy expenditure and susceptibility to obesity in adulthood, and that the prebiotic polydextrose (PDX) would prevent the consequences of programming by maternal obesity. METHODS: Female mice were fed a control (Con) or obesogenic diet (Ob) for 6 weeks prior to mating and throughout pregnancy and lactation. Half the obese dams were supplemented with 5% PDX (ObPDX) in drinking water throughout pregnancy and lactation. Offspring were weaned onto standard chow. At 3 and 6 months, offspring ener

Exposed Areas Above Sea Level on Earth >3.5 Gyr Ago: Implications for Prebiotic and Primitive Biotic Chemistry.

How life began on Earth is still largely shrouded in mystery. One of the central ideas for various origins of life scenarios is Darwin's "warm little pond". In these small bodies of water, simple prebiotic compounds such as amino acids, nucleobases, and so on, were produced from reagents such as hydrogen cyanide and aldehydes/ketones. These simple prebiotic compounds underwent further reactions, producing more complex molecules. The process of chemical evolution would have produced increasingly complex molecules, eventually yielding a molecule with the properties of information storage and rep

Prebiotic inulin supplementation modulates the immune response and restores gut morphology in Giardia duodenalis-infected malnourished mice.

Malnutrition induces a state of growth retardation and immunologic depression, enhancing the host susceptibility to various infections. In the present study, it was observed that prebiotic supplementation either prior or simultaneously with Giardia infection in malnourished mice significantly reduced the severity of giardiasis and increased the body and small intestine mass, along with increased lactobacilli counts in faeces compared with malnourished-Giardia-infected mice. More specifically, prebiotic supplementation significantly increased the levels of anti-giardial IgG and IgA antibodies a

Enzymatic Production of Prebiotic Xylooligosaccharides Using a Bacillus pumilus GH30_8 Glucuronoxylanase: Structural Basis of Glucuronoxylan Recognition and Hydrolysis.

Transformation of agro-industrial products into value-added products, such as prebiotic oligosaccharides, is a key element of the emerging bioeconomy. Here, we characterized a new GH30_8 glucuronoxylanase from Bacillus pumilus (BpXyn30_8A) for its potential in producing xylooligosaccharides (XOS). BpXyn30_8A showed tolerance to ethanol and NaCl and released both linear and branched XOS containing MeGlcA at the penultimate nonreducing end residue. Its X-ray structure, determined at 2.16 Å resolution, revealed high similarity to other glucuronoxylanases. Furthermore, BpXyn30_8A achieved higher x
