Recommended Terminology for Substance Use Disorders in the Care of Children, Adolescents, Young Adults, and Families.

Pediatricians across the United States encounter infants, children, adolescents, young adults, and families affected by substance use disorders in their daily practice. For much of history, substance use has been viewed as a moral failing for which individuals themselves are to blame; however, as addiction became understood as a medical disorder, clinical terminology has shifted along with a growing awareness of harm of stigmatizing language in medicine. In issuing this policy statement, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) joins other large organizations in providing recommendations regar

Population Characteristics and Clinical Outcomes from the Renal Transplant Outcome Prediction Validation Study (TOPVAS).

Kidney transplantation is the preferred method for selected patients with kidney failure. Despite major improvements over the last decades, a significant proportion of organs are still lost every year. Causes of graft loss and impaired graft function are incompletely understood and prognostic tools are lacking. Here, we describe baseline characteristics and outcomes of the non-interventional Transplant Outcome Prediction Validation Study (TOPVAS). A total of 241 patients receiving a non-living kidney transplant were recruited in three Austrian transplantation centres and treated according to l

Shift of circadian feeding pattern by high-fat diets is coincident with reward deficits in obese mice.

Recent studies provide evidence that high-fat diets (HF) trigger both i) a deficit of reward responses linked to a decrease of mesolimbic dopaminergic activity, and ii) a disorganization of circadian feeding behavior that switch from a structured meal-based schedule to a continuous snacking, even during periods normally devoted to rest. This feeding pattern has been shown to be a cause of HF-induced overweight and obesity. Our hypothesis deals with the eventual link between the rewarding properties of food and the circadian distribution of meals. We have investigated the effect of circadian fe

Multiple sclerosis: patients' information sources and needs on disease symptoms and management.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the current information sources of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) in the early stages of their disease and to identify patients' preferred source of information. The relative amounts of information from the different sources were also compared. METHODS: Participants at a newly diagnosed information session organized by the Multiple Sclerosis Society of South Australia were invited to complete a questionnaire. Participants were asked to rate on a visual analog scale how much information they had received about MS and optic neuritis from different information so

Roots, Leaves, and Flowers: A Narrative Review of Herbs and Botanicals Used for Self-Managed Abortion in Asia and the Pacific.

Abortion has existed throughout history, often outside of formal health care systems. This type of care, now called self-managed abortion, has historically been achieved in part through botanicals and traditional medicines. Their use continues into the modern day, especially in Asia, Hawai'i, and other Pacific Islands, where indigenous medicine traditions practice alongside allopathic medicine. Many of these botanicals, such as papaya leaves, hibiscus flowers, and young kī, and traditional medicines, such as tianhuafen, yuanhua, and Shenghua Decoction, have undergone scientific and clinical in

Acceptability of neonatal circumcision by pregnant women in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Studies on voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) have provided convincing evidence on its efficacy to provide partial protection against female-to-male HIV transmission in circumcised men. The World Health Organization and UNAIDS subsequently formulated recommendations for VMMC implementation that included implementation of neonatal medical male circumcision (NMMC) to all infants up to two months old. Knowledge regarding the acceptability of NMMC by pregnant women who are candidates for granting of consents for NMMC procedures or its ideal placement within health programmes is

Disproportionality analysis of adverse events associated with pacritinib: a real-world study based on FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database.

INTRODUCTION: Pacritinib, a selective Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor, is approved for the treatment of myelofibrosis in adults with severe thrombocytopenia. However, its safety profile in real-world populations remains unclear. The aim of study is provided a comprehensive profile of pacritinib's safety by evaluating the adverse events (AEs) using a real-world pharmacovigilance database. METHODS: Data from the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database, spanning from the first quarter of 2022 to the second quarter of 2024, served as the basis for this analysis. To identify potential AE

Barriers to Diagnosis and Treatment for Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD): A Scoping Review.

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a significant public health challenge. While research has increased over the past decade, barriers to PMDD diagnosis and treatment persist. This paper explores the global barriers to diagnosis and treatment for PMDD. A scoping review of the literature was performed using the PubMed, PsycINFO, and CINAHL Plus databases to compile existing data on barriers to PMDD diagnosis and treatment. Eligibility criteria for articles included original research published within the last 10 years, written in English, and focused on PMDD with explicit assessment of at

A study on adverse events of botulinum toxin type A in real-world applications: A FAERS database analysis.

AIMS: Botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) is widely used for its efficacy in treating a variety of neuromuscular disorders. However, data on its safety and adverse events (AEs) in real-world settings remain limited. The Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database provides an invaluable resource for evaluating the safety of BoNT-A. METHODS: We used four methods to evaluate the disproportionality of AEs associated with BoNT-A: the reporting odds ratio (ROR), the proportional reporting ratio (PRR), the Bayesian confidence propagation neural network (BCPNN), and the m

Professional development preferences and needs of healthcare providers working with older adults on exercise and nutrition: results of key informant interviews.

Most older adults want to age in place, and evidence-based health behaviours that support aging in place include healthy diets and physical activity. Healthcare professionals need training in the science and practice of nutrition and physical activity to support their older adult clients to age in place. In this study we investigated knowledge gaps among healthcare professionals and the organizations that employ them regarding exercise and nutrition for older adults. We also aimed to identify their perceptions of effective and ineffective continuing education approaches, how they choose contin

Systematic Review of Treatment Options and Therapeutic Responses for Lesions of the Sella and Orbit: Evidence-Based Recommendations.

OBJECTIVE: Inflammatory pathologies of the sella and orbit are rare but require prompt diagnosis to initiate effective treatment. Because uniform recommendations for treatment are currently lacking, we performed an evidence-based review to identify recommendations. METHODS: We performed a literature search of the PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases to identify papers evaluating treatment of inflammatory pathologies of the sella and orbit. We used PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines to define recommendations, specifically examining ag

Porous structured cotton-based ACF for the adsorption of benzen.

Fibrous activated carbon has attracted emerging research interests due to its remarkable adsorption performance for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Though this adsorption behavior for VOCs is closely related to the pore structure on the surface of activated carbon fiber (ACF), few researchers paid attentions to the influence of textural properties of this adsorption process. Especially, cotton-based activated carbon fiber (CACF) for adsorbing benzene pollutant is rarely reported. Herein, in order to develop a high-performance adsorbent for the removal of VOCs pollutants, this work studied t

Barriers, motivators, and facilitators of physical activity in dementia patients: A systematic review.

PURPOSE: Physical activity (PA) has the potential to slow the progression of dementia patients' cognitive and physical decline. A better understanding of the factors that facilitate or hamper dementia patients' PA participation will increase the success rate of implementing PA in dementia patients' daily care. We systematically screened the barriers, motivators, and facilitators of PA participation in dementia patients, complementing previous analyses of quantitative correlates of PA in community-dwelling dementia patients. METHODS: Systematic searches yielded 78 potential studies of which se

Assessing the Utility of a Patient-Facing Diagnostic Tool Among Individuals With Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome: Focus Group Study.

BACKGROUND: Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS), characterized by joint hypermobility, skin laxity, and tissue fragility, is thought to be the most common inherited connective tissue disorder, with millions affected worldwide. Diagnosing this condition remains a challenge that can impact quality of life for individuals with hEDS. Many with hEDS describe extended diagnostic odysseys involving exorbitant time and monetary investment. This delay is due to the complexity of diagnosis, symptom overlap with other conditions, and limited access to providers. Many primary care providers are unfa

Resonant frequencies of human organs, tissues, and body parts: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Exposure to mechanical vibrations transmitted to the whole body, known as whole body vibration (WBV), poses significant risks to health and safety, particularly contributing to spinal disorders and lower back pain among workers. To mitigate these risks, estimating the resonant frequencies of human body parts and organs is essential, as vibrations near these frequencies can amplify WBVs' harmful effects. However, despite the topic's importance, a comprehensive review of natural frequencies for several body parts remains, quite surprisingly, lacking. The widely cited work by Rasmussen (1983J. Ac
